Jockey Silvino Morales put on a final-day clinic at Hastings on Sunday, signing off on the season with a dominant five-winner afternoon
HIGHLIGHTS
Silvino Morales had five winning rides.
Amadeo Perez had a riding double.
The handle was $583,140.
The rain just about held off on a heavy, grey afternoon, as loyal racegoers revelled in a nine-race feast to see off the 2023 season. The track was sealed, wet and fast all afternoon.
Race 1.
The first event on closing day at Hastings saw Peter Redekop's AN ARMY OF LIGHT ($5.30) settled in second early under Amadeo Perez, far back off of a tearaway leader. Then, when given his cue, he scooted up the inside on the final turn and drew off to a good score in 1:16.77 for trainer Barbara Heads. Hawaiian Shirt Guys’ EARS TO US showed his customary brilliant speed, blitzing past the half-mile station in 44.98, but his early enthusiasm started to get the better of him approaching the stretch and he did well to hold on for second. Ralph Jesiak's TUXEDO was travelling well at the end and got up to be a fast-closing third.
Race 2.
The second went to Roger Snow, Don Danard and Conrad Rozenek's SPACE ($10.70), who raced on the pace through sensible fractions over the wet-fast conditions (23.80, 46.82 and 1:10.89) under Brian Boodramsingh and stayed strong through the final stages; winning easily in a smart time of 1:42.86 for trainer Mel Snow. Century Plaza Stables STORMY BLUE raced on the lead with the winner but was unable to stay with his rival in the stretch and did well to be second. J G Williamson Racing Stable’s STAR ENTRY spent the entire trip on the rail, watching the pace setters, and ended up winning the photo for third.
Race 3.
The third race on the card was won by Mauro Comensoli's STANFORD NORTH ($2.90), who led from start to finish under Silvino Morales, cruising through fractions 22.78 and 46.39 and having just enough to get the victory for trainer Dino Condilenios. Jean Lavallee's DAPPER DON was in a perfect striking spot under Chris Mamdeen and closed up strongly to be a very promising runner-up. Sandra Corsan’s BORROWED EQUITY made a mess of the start, which made his challenge far greater. Brian Boodramsingh got him back into contention down the backside, but couldn’t sustain his bid and ended up a good third.
Race 4.
The fourth of the afternoon saw J G Williamson Racing Stables’ GOOD BYE PUTIN ($13.70) get a clever ride by Silvino Morales, racing on the rail behind a very slow pace before pushing out turning for home and easily running by the pacesetters to win in 1:45.03 for trainer Steve Henson. Nicole Droder's FAMILY BIZ was also stuck to the rail behind the pace early. He found room late but couldn’t sprint home with the winner, although he did rally into the second spot. Fred and Sheldon Kwan's PARKER POINT chased a slow pace (24.82, 50.06 and 1:14.39), won the pace battle under Kimal Santo and did well to be a good third off of the two month layoff.
Race 5.
The fifth race on the program went to George and Donna Gilbert’s COUNTERACT ($3.80), who suffered from a wide trip but would not be denied under Amadeo Perez, as the duo barely got up in the shadow of the wire to post the victory in 1:16.85 for trainer Mark Cloutier. Ironside Stables’ DESIRED OUTCOME was given a dream run by Brian Boodramsingh, skimming the rail, and only just missing out in a narrow loss. Dennis Dale, Morris Peter and Ed Welsh's ROCKCLIFFE was taken off the pace early under Antonio Reyes, then shifted to the rail, making the lead on the final turn before drifting out late. He ended up third for conditioner Keith Pedersen, beaten less than a head for all the money.
Race 6 — The Third Marathon Race
The sixth went to Mort Hall and Praven Sorensen's ARTISTIC JEWLER, who out-stayed her male counterparts after stalking a moderate pace under Antonio Reyes on the rail. The pair proved best late in the mile-and-a-half test, stopping the timer in 2:33.51 for trainer Barbara Heads. Dennis Spence’s JOCK TALK was miles back early under Kimal Santo, before flying down backside and they were gaining on the winner with every stride but had to settle for second. Minnaloushe Stables and Dave Milburn's YOU DON'T OWN ME was off a step slow but he had no troubles securing the front end, leading through splits of 24.59, 49, 1:13.63 and got the mile in 1:40.67. He started to drift slightly leaving the rail open going into the clubhouse turn but remained stubborn as usual and stayed-on determinedly for third.
Race 7.
The seventh race of the day saw Dino Condilenios’ CHAMPIOSA ($16.80) loop the field on the final turn and hang on for a good win under Silvino Morales in a nice time of 1:45.23. Gabrielle Mathussek’s PADDY D'ORO rallied up the inside, and was gaining on the winner, but had to settle for second. Peter Redekop's AZOV SEA sat close to a quick early tempo (23.65, 47.81 and 1:12.50) struck the lead on the stretch turn but couldn’t see it out and finished third.
Claims:
AZOV SEA was claimed by owner trainer Jesse Morrison
Race 8.
The eighth race went to the Last Call Racing Stable and Cathy Bornn’s JUST MAKE BELIEVE ($7.10), who made a sharp inside move coming from last to first to claim victory under Silvino Morales for trainer Brent Bremner, getting the mile and a sixteenth in 1:44.91. WYN Racing Stables’ GORKY PARK was guided into a perfect spot early by Kimal Santo, tracking a very quick pace and made a solid late run and just missed, ending up second. Rob and Sheena Maybin's AVE'S IN COMMAND set a contested pace under Chris Mamdeen (23.95, 47.49 and 1:11.74) and fought valiantly to the wire but was just reeled in late and finished a close third.
Claims:
MAKEITORBREAKIT was claimed by owners Mr & Mrs Harold Barroby for trainer Harold Barroby
Race 9.
The last race of the 2023 season was won by Stewart Spencer's KNOPFLER ($9.20) who finally broke through for trainer Keith Pedersen with his first win of the season after a string of unlucky trips. The victory gave Silvino Morales his fifth win of the day in a final time of 1:17.31. BFA Holdings’ CARLA'S HONOR was prominent early, battling on a sensible pace (23.01 and 46.47) under Amadeo Perez and leading the field into the lane, but was just caught late, ending up second for trainer Cindy Krasner. Rob and Sheena Maybin's EYE BE SEEING YOU was stuck in behind runners for much of the trip and did well to shake loose under Chris Mamdeen to be third.

Newsletter News
A huge “thank you” to everyone who helped us produce the Horseracing BC Newsletter this season. Without Mike Heads’ words, Michael Bye and Patti Tubbs’ photography, Jill Reid’s proofreading and Pat Jarvis’ historical knowledge, we’d all be looking at blank pages!
Special thanks, of course, are also reserved for everyone who has signed-up to the Newsletter and to those who have so kindly reached out to us this year, whether to compliment or berate us — we probably deserved the latter and certainly very little of the former.
Feedback is always very welcome, so do drop us a line. And, please, if you have any Thoroughbred-related news you’d like us to share, don’t hesitate to get in touch. We now have close to 700 subscribers, so if you want to sell a horse or have any related services you’d like to tell people about, you know where to come.
Finally, thank you to everyone on the backstretch for your time and patience in the face of the occasionally silly (or impertinent) question.
The Newsletter will take a few days off now, but we’ll be back next week with more local, national and international racing and breeding content.
The best of racing luck to one and all,
Nigel Reid
