Four of the day’s six races were won by horses bred here in B.C.
A lovely early fall day, with just the faintest of chills in the air, produced perfect racing conditions for horses and humans. The track was fast throughout the afternoon with all bar one of the winners coming from on, or near, the pace.
Race 1.
The Saturday opener saw Rob and Sheena Maybin's JERSEY LILLIE ($5.90) lead them all a merry chase under Chris Mamdeen (22.24, 46.13), cruising through sensible fractions then opening up turning for home for a convincing score in 1:16.76 for trainer Rob Maybin. Willow Creek Farm's C C SUNRISE was away well and in a perfect spot under Amadeo Perez, but they were only able to scoot up the inside to be second for conditioner Steve Henson. Jordan Froelich and Ryan Deyotte's RICHARDS COMMAND was at the back of the pack early and put in a nice late run under Kerron Khelawan to gain third money for trainer Ryan Deyotte.
Race 2.
The second of the afternoon went to Don Danard and Mel Snow's CASCADE BILLY ($4.10), who broke well and was content to sit just off the pace under Brian Boodramsingh. However, the rail remained open on the first turn so they seized the opportunity and that ended up being the key to victory as they crossed the line first in a rapid 1:15.89 for trainer Mel Snow. TC Racing's STANFORD BAY was away alertly with Kimal Santo at the controls. The pair had the lead but then took a hold before getting to the rail and ending up hung-out two wide and eventually moving between runners for the next quarter-mile; chasing through quick splits (22.18, 44.91) and staying-on well to be second for conditioner Rob Gilker. Nicole Droder's FLORIDA GATOR had a good trip behind a three-way speed duel and flew late to be third for trainer Craig MacPherson.
Race 3.
The third race was won by Sandra Corsan’s BORROWED EQUITY ($12.50), who made a mess of the start under Brian Boodramsingh, but still managed to close up strongly to gain command in deep stretch for the victory for trainer Mel Snow. Shamrock Racing Stables and Brian Phillips’ NU SOUP FOR BABY was settled nicely in behind the speed by Ridge Balgobin then moved out three-wide to challenge on the backside and fought valiantly to the wire while being forced out wide turning for home, ending up third but promoted to second after a disqualification. Rob and Sheena Maybin's RICK'S DANCER set a lively and contested pace (23.64, 48.22, 1:13.26) on the inside but drifted out badly on the final turn under Chris Mamdeen and, while able to hold second, was subsequently disqualified and placed third.
Race 4.
The fourth race on the program went to Rob and Vicky Gilker's Y VEE R ($3.50), who had to battle through contested fractions (23.78, 48.34, 1:12.75) but was resilient when collared and drew clear for an impressive victory in 1:44.06 for trainer Rob Gilker. Jordan Froelich and Ryan Deyotte's GOOD BYE PUTIN, who sat a perfect trip behind the speed under Chris Mamdeen, engaged Y VEE R at the far turn but could not get by and ended up a clear second for trainer Ryan Deyotte. Mel Snow, Len Houwelling and Doug Corsan's SLEW'S DA BOSS rode the rail the entire trip under Brian Boodramsingh and checked in third for Mel Snow.
Claims:
Y VEE R was claimed by owners Mr & Mrs H J Barroby for trainer Harold Barroby for
Race 5.
The fifth race was won by Peter Redekop's CLASS CODE ($11.10), who tracked a very slow tempo with Amadeo Perez at the controls and the lone mare in the race forged to the lead in deep stretch to win in 1:50.75 for trainer Barbara Heads. George and Donna Gilbert’s COUNTERACT set a leisurely pace with Brian Boodramsingh aboard (23.98, 48.74, 1:13.91), taking the lead to the stretch, but was just reeled-in late. Gord Christoff’s GUNFIGHTER was slow early and was tucked in behind the pedestrian pace under Kerron Khelawan. They were motoring home late but could not catch the top two, ending up a close third for Rob Anderson.
Claims:
CLASS CODE was claimed by owners WYN Racing Stables Corp for trainer Ian Jewell
Race 6.
The final race of the day went to Peter Redekop's A LITTLE MERCY NOW ($8.30), who took full advantage of nobody wanting the lead and asserted herself on top (24.95, 48.97, 1:13.80) under Amadeo Perez and just held the lead coming to the wire in 1:46.85 for trainer Barbara Heads. Forster Stables’ ON MY GOOD SIDE ran well in defeat, checking in a clear second with Antonio Reyes in the irons for Hall of Fame conditioner, Dave Forster. Roxanne's Racing Stable, Milton Palma, Cody and Kelsi Wellard's CHABI was up on the pace with Brian Boodramsingh aboard but could not stay with the top two and ended up third for trainer Pete Gregory.
