High smoke and the Autumnal Equinox combined for a hazy, but warm, afternoon with plenty of sunny periods. The track remained fast all afternoon, with the first four heats going to horses on, or close, to the lead throughout.
Race 1.
The first on Sunday went to Mainline Stable's FINDING WAYS ($5.80) who out-sprinted everyone early and, surprisingly, got a very easy lead in 23.07 and 46.32 under Silvino Morales. The pair was never seriously threatened thereafter and cruised home clear in 1:17.19 for trainer Nicole Rycroft. Michelle Roberts-Henson and Mark McGinnis’ RACING RIVER was bounced around leaving the gate, leaving him too far back early, but he came with a big wide rush in the stretch to claim second money under Ridge Balgobin. WYN Racing Stables KOALA was content to sit off of the slow pace and she stayed gamely to the wire while running against the boys and checked in a good third.
Claims:
TIZ VICIOUS was claimed by owner Nicole Droder for trainer Craig MacPherson
Race 2.
The second of the day saw an impressive run from Century Plaza Stable’s STORMY BLUE ($3.40) who never game them a chance, as he seized the lead early (23.55, 47.95 and 1:12.18) under Antonio Reyes and gradually widened to win well in 1:44.19 for conditioner Barbara Heads. Warren Wilson, Neil Stajkowski, June Sutherland, Barry Hickman and Lesley Small's WISELY PLAYED was a little closer to the pace than usual, but with speed in the lineup he couldn’t catch the runaway leader and finished a game second. Blue Willow Dairy’s ROOKIE YEAR settled nicely in behind the pace and stayed on to be third.
Race 3.
The third race on the card was won by WYN Racing Stables’ DYNAMITER ($15.90) who kept the string of wire-to-wire winners going as he led throughout (24.23, 48.25 and 1:12.80) under Fraser Aebly and stopped the timer in a good 1:46.44 for trainer Larry Grieve. Tod Mountain Thoroughbreds’ OSTRACIZE was running with the boys today and after an adventurous opening quarter mile, she followed the winner around the track and checked in second. Last Call Racing Stable and Cathy Bornn's JUST MAKE BELIEVE was wide throughout most of the trip and kept grinding away but just missed the runner-up spot.
Claims:
OSTRACIZE was claimed by owners Rob and Sheena Maybin for trainer Rob Maybin
Race 4.
The fourth of the day went to WYN Racing Stables’ SOMTHING ELUSIVE ($2.90) who broke on top and relaxed nicely just off of the speed before pouncing on the leader under Kimal Santo on the final bend. The duo drew off to an easy score in 1:18.46 for trainer Larry Grieve. Mauro Comensoli's DIVAANY showed promise in his debut, checking a clear second under Amadeo Perez for trainer Dino Condilenios. Harold and Sandra Barroby's SHOWMAN set the early tempo (23.23, 46.46) and stayed on stubbornly for third under the encouragement of rider Kuri Powell.
Race 5.
The fifth of the afternoon saw Dennis Spence's JOCK TALK ($5.10) rally from far back under Kimal Santo to just run down the pacesetter in deep stretch to get the victory in 1:47.30 for trainer Cindy Krasner. Dino Condilenios’ CHAMPIOSA went first time Lasix and ran a huge race, chasing fractions of 24.18, 49.08 and 1:14.18 under Silvino Morales and ran too good to lose, ending up second. Ralph Jesiak's TUXEDO was taken off the pace and seemed comfortable in third under Antonio Reyes where they pretty much stayed throughout for trainer Rob VanOverschot.
Race 6.
The sixth race went to Kent Bird and Dino Condilenios’ BETTER TONE ($32.90), who took full advantage of a hot pace, saving ground under Silvino Morales until the stretch turn when they angled out three-wide to take command before driving home powerfully for a daylight victory in 1:46.74 for trainer Dino Condilenios. Julie Balenzano and Susanna Calendino's ENGLISH BAY TEDDY sat far back off of the speed (23.38, 47.52 and 1:13.25) and pressed on late to get up for the runner-up spot. Canoe Pass Stable and Craig MacPherson's LOGICAL AL had to overcome a three- and four-wide trip and did well to rescue third money.
Claims:
LOGICAL AL was claimed by owners Rob and Sheena Maybin for trainer Rob Maybin
Race 7.
The nightcap saw Nicole Droder's FAMILY BIZ ($5.20) weave his way through the field, coming from last place to win with clever handling by rider Kerron Khelawan in 1:45.93 for trainer CraigMacPherson. Joe and Gloria Russo's COUNTRY COWBOY was given a perfect ride by Learie Seecharan, saving every inch of ground, briefly gained the lead in the stretch but could not match strides with the winner and checked in a good second for conditioner Patty Leaney. J G Williamson Racing’s GOOD BYE PUTIN had an unfortunate trip, racing wide early under Fraser Aebly before putting in a solid move up the inside to grab third.
Next Week is B.C. Derby Day!
Racing resumes next Saturday, September 16th at 2:00 p.m. with four Stakes races headed by the $125,000 B.C. Derby. Also on the card will be the

Moira Powers to Big Win in Grade 2 Canadian
By: Jennifer Morrison | September 10, 2023
With a brilliant turn of foot reminiscent of her big wins in last year’s Queen’s Plate and Woodbine Oaks, MOIRA, the reigning Horse of the Year, was back in the winner’s circle Saturday after her scintillating Canadian Stakes (G2) win.
Second in all three races this year, all at shorter distances than the ‘about’ 1 1/8 miles of the Canadian, Moira was up against the top mare Fev Rover (Ire) once again. Not only had Fev Rover defeated Moira in the July 1 Nassau Stakes (G2) but she was coming off strong win in the Grade 1 Beverly D at Colonial on Aug. 12 for trainer Mark Casse.
Early in the Canadian, presented by the Japan Racing Association, it appeared Fev Rover, with jockey Patrick Husbands perched up on her, was going to be tough once again. The five-year-old owned by Tracy Farmer tracked Dance Smartly Stakes (G2) winner Miss Dracarys, who also beat Moira that day, and the two leaders seemed to be going easily. Skims (GB), trained by Sug McGaughey, moved up three wide to join the leaders into the long, wide turn while Moira and Rafael Hernandez stayed four lengths back.
That is, until Hernandez gave her a cue and in a blink, she was in front by open lengths. “And she’s back with a vengeance,” said track announcer Robert Geller as Moira continued to widen, finally winning by 6 1/2 lengths in 1:46.01. Skims held second by a head over a closing Atomic Blonde. Fev Rover was back in fourth. Moira was the 5-to-2 second choice as Fev Rover was 3-to-5.
