Three to Get Ready
We B Three faces tough competition in the day's feature, while Prince Cairo bids to give the Hastings Racing Club a third consecutive winner
Four of these won last time out and none in better style than the veteran, Ace Deuce. The 11yo put five lengths on his rivals over this distance and he should be thereabouts again today. Wise Market is your morning line favourite following a win over 6½ furlongs last time. He has winning form over this trip, has hit the board 26 times from 38 starts and will be a popular choice to follow up. Marginal preference is given to the 5yo Storm Victory mare, OMBRE’ ROSE, who has won both times she has taken on the mile-and-sixteenth and who also won last time out.
WE B THREE was disqualified after beating Run Lola Run and Kick Up the Dust by a nose last time, after the stewards intervened, and there may be some points to try and prove in this as many thought the ‘winner’ unlucky to be taken down. Definite Pleasure led Floral and Mi Reyna a merry dance until weakening at the far turn last time, while her vanquishers that day are once more difficult to choose between.
Experience comes in handy in these 2yo contests and only one of these has had a run so far in their young careers. LOVEABOVEANDBEYOND finished second behind impressive winner Rockcliffe earlier this month and any normal progress after such a promising debut should see her go very close in this. Rememberthealamo was bought out of the Glen Todd dispersal sale and has done plenty of work this spring, while Neighneigh and Calypso Princess have both shown up well in the mornings. B C Chu Chu appeals most of the rest.
Much to like about Bettin’ Man’s victory last time, when he dug deep to regain the lead and win going away. However, this is over a mile-and-sixteenth and the speedily-bred gelding’s stamina must be taken on trust. Causin’ Havoc, meanwhile, has no such stamina concerns, having put in his best efforts over today’s distance, although he hasn’t won since 2019. DEBATEABLE’s close-up fourth on his seasonal debut would give him a big chance here and the last time he ran ‘long’ was at Century Mile in September, where he won.
These five 3yos are stepping up to a mile-and-sixteenth for the first time in their careers and it will be fascinating to see how they get on. Miss the Hype and Value Dancer stayed on well enough behind AMANDA last time to suggest the increased distance might suite, although all three were a long way behind the winner Daphne that day. Amanda had Chica Hermosa behind her in a CTHS Stakes race at Century Mile in October, but the latter ran on well to grab second last time and could go well.
Bellaroo beat subsequent winners Koala and Sungold Beauty on her seasonal debut and a rallying third behind Hollywood Mistress last time suggests this mile and sixteenth might suit. Certifiable also had Sungold Beauty behind her when winning over today’s distance last September. PAGODA RIDGE, meanwhile, has been swimming in deeper waters than she faces here and, while unproven at the distance, appears to be the class of the race.
Some classy types on display in the finale. Prince Cairo went down narrowly last time and had He’s Relentless behind him at the wire, while Driller’s defeat last month was his first run of the season and was against some of the best horses on the premises. The speedy McMurphy, conversely, has had three runs already this term and the perennial frontrunner will ensure there’s no slacking. Daphne has it all to do against the boys, although her impressive gate-to-wire maiden victory in a good time suggests she can more than hold her own. Preference is given to the lightly-raced CHASE THE SUN, whose near six-length maiden win marked him as one to follow.

Winners Bred in British Columbia
Another good week for locally-bred horses with ten of the 14 contests held at Hastings last weekend going to BC-bred runners. There were two wins for progeny of Jersey Town who, disappointingly, only stood here for a single season but who continues to leave his mark. There was also a brace of winners for Numaany, who is also no longer standing in the Province but, while here, was responsible for siring the great Here’s Hannah - NR.
