The forecast storm was behind schedule on Sunday, allowing racing at Hastings to take place under clearish skies, albeit with a cool, autumnal breeze. The track was fast again following Saturday’s wet affair.
Race 1.
The first on the Sunday card went to Sharlea Stable's BARBERRY BANDIT ($8.50) who was prominent early under Fraser Aebly, racing on a slow but contested pace (22.86, 46.56) before sprinting away late to a big win in 1:18.01 for trainer Frank Barroby. Hall-of-Famer Frank Barroby wasn’t done, as his other entrant Larry and Margaret Getson and Rocking Bar B Outfit’s MAX BOOSTER, ran second under Brian Boodramsingh, completing a $200 Exactor payoff for a $2 bet. Mauro Comensoli's STANFORD NORTH was up on the slow pace and couldn’t stay with the top two but held well to be third.
Race 2.
The second of the day saw Ironside Stables’ DESIRED OUTCOME ($3.80) come from last-to-first with a well-timed ride by Brian Boodramsingh to get up in deep stretch for a narrow victory in 1:17.45 for trainer Rob VanOverschot. Rob and Vicky Gilker's CROWN COUNCIL was part of a sensible pace (22.44, 46.12), took the lead into the lane and ran gamely to the wire, just missing by a nose under Kerron Khelawan. Triple 8 Racing's ANDALEIGH was on the outside for much of the trip and did well to be a clear third.
Race 3.
The third on the afternoon was won by Fabio Chiesa and Willow Creek Farm's FRANKIE MACHINE ($4.90), who was content to settle far back off of a very quick pace under Amadeo Perez. Steered up the inside on the backside by Perez, he got in contention on the final turn and split horses late to win in 1:44.53 for trainer Steve Henson. Gabrielle Mathussek’s PADDY D'ORO ran a huge race in defeat, tracking the quick pace (23.60, 46.81 and 1:11.86), making the lead at the far turn, staying strong to the wire and just missing. Last Call Racing Stable and Cathy Bornn’s JUST MAKE BELIEVE was also in behind the speed early and made a good three-wide move and looked to have a shot of winning, but had to settle for an unlucky third, beaten less than a length.
Race 4.
The fourth race originally went narrowly to G.O. Stables and Alexa Ramirez's GROOVIN’ IS BAK, who sat a perfect trip under Silvino Morales behind a quick pace (22.15, 45.89), struck the front inside the sixteenth pole and just held on for trainer Erick Gutierrez in a good time of 1:17.83. However, the ‘winner’ was subsequently disqualified and placed third for interference in deep stretch with Julie Balenzano and Susanna Calendino's ENGLISH BAY TEDDY ($8.00) promoted to first after the DQ. Held up off of the early fractions by Brian Boodramsingh, English Bay Teddy then made a sharp move when asked on the stretch turn and flew late to be a close second. Tod Mountain Thoroughbreds and James Redekop's BAK TO LIBERTY was also slow to begin and content to be at the rear early before flying late. However, he lacked racing room and was moved up from third to second after the inquiry was completed.
Race 5.
The fifth race of the day saw Mauro Comensoli's DIVAANY ($4.10) grind out a hard fought victory, rallying from just off the pace to get up by a the narrowest of margins under Amadeo Perez in 1:19.75 for trainer Dino Condilenios. Harold and Sandra Barroby's SHOWMAN was given a great trip by Kuri Powell, sitting just off of a sensible pace (22.72, 47.03), leading the field into the lane and was just caught in the final stride. Jean Lavallee's DAPPER DON saved every inch of ground under Jose Gomez and closed well on the inside to be third.
Race 6.
The sixth on the program was won by Tod Mountain Thoroughbreds’ STAY FANTASTIC ($7.50), who was back to his old self as he showed good speed and assumed a perfect spot under Amadeo Perez behind a torrid speed duel (23.05, 46.20 and 1:11.23). Then, when the speedsters were done, he quickly took command and drew off to an impressive win in 1:43.97 for trainer Edgar Mendoza. Blue Willow Dairy’s ROOKIE YEAR was a little farther back than usual but still managed to sneak up the inside to be second under Silvino Morales for trainer Dave Forster. James Redekop and Stefan Ferrario's BROKE AN BROKEN was also farther back than usual and had to weave his way through the field and was running well at the end, finishing third.
Race 7.
The seventh race was #2 of the Marathon Series, going a mile and three-eighths. Taking home the top prize was Lance Giesbrecht and Gord Christoff’s ERLICH ($9.40), who was given another brilliant ground-saving ride by Kerron Khelawan, which aided him in winning in the clear in 2:20.89 for trainer Rob Anderson. Doug Corsan, Len Houweling and Mel Snow's SLEW'S DA BOSS followed the winner through on the rail to get the runner-up spot at big odds. George Georgeopoulos and Terry Georgeopoulos’ FORT LANGLEY raced in between horses for most of the trip and ran-on late to be third.
