Hastings Review, Sunday Oct 2
Race 1.
The Sunday opener was a runaway victory for Rob VanOverschot’s DON WITH THE WIND ($3.70), who left the gate on top and led through fractions of 23.52, 48.04 and 1:13.26. He built up a huge lead under Antonio Reyes on the stretch turn and cruised home the easiest of winners in 1:45.52. Michelle Roberts-Henson, Brad Henson, Randy Henson, Dan Henson and Trevor Irwin's BARNEY GOOGLE was content to settle back at the rear of the field and put in a good late run to get for second money in deep stretch. Don Tetaranko’s SILK STILETTOS elected to settle of the pace and found a nice spot on the rail and she looked to be threat in the final quarter mile but couldn’t sustain her bid and checked in third.
Race 2.
The second of the day was won by Lillian Meehan-Jarvis KLONDIKE GENTLEMAN ($25.90) who in a surprise led the field throughout to win in 1:46.23. The son of Cause to Believe was part of a contested pace that saw the opening quarter go in 24.15 with four of the five runners stacked up across the track KLONDIKE GENTLEMAN was snuggled up against the rail which was a huge advantage as carried on through a 47.51 and 1:12.60 and stayed gamely all the way to the finish to get the victory. Jordan Froelich's MR QUALITY was up close to the lead early then dropped back to track the speed when the fractions heated up and then came with a solid late run only to miss by a nose. The Willow Creek Farms GUNS N AMMO bobbled as the gates opened which cost him as he ended up four wide through the first quarter mile and then was forced to stay out in the three path for the remainder far of the trip which obviously hurt his chances and ended up third beaten by about a neck for all the money.
Race 3.
The third of the afternoon went to William Long's SOLANDER ($9.00), who was let relax by rider Scott Williams well back off of a contested pace then produced a four move on the stretch turn and was just able to grind out the win for trainer Patty Leaney in 1:47.55. Clint Willson's SIDERO ran too well to lose after being pressed through splits of 24.24, 48.03 and 1:13.79 he shrugged off of his pace rivals and held gamely through the lane but had to settle for second. The Willow Creek Farms BEST ONE YET was up on the quick early then drifted back through the middle portion of the race and came on again in the stretch to get third.
Race 4.
The fourth event went to Larry Potozny, Peter Langelaan and Wil-a-Way Farms FLORIDA GATOR ($4.00), who was set off as the heavy favourite and delivered a lethal late run under Antonio Reyes to going away in 1:17.81 for trainer Barbara Heads. Kent Bird and Dino Condilenios BETTER TONE made a huge rally from well back under Ridge Balgobin to get into the second spot. The Willow Creek Farms ALL LIQUORD UP set a lively early pace (22.56, 45.95) under Silvino Morales and led to the stretch but a little tired late and just held third.
Race 5.
Robin Sadler, John and Kim Morrison’s BOLD ARCH ($11.30) was absolutely brilliant in victory as he shook loose early and set comfortable splits of 22.02 and 45.19 and had plenty left in the tank to win in a sparkling 1:15.98 under Silvino Morales. Don Danard and Mel Snow's CASCADE BILLY turned in another top class performance in a sprint as Kimal Santo hustled him four wide on the backside and tried to cut into the margin of the pace setter and made things interesting in the stretch but had to settle for the runner-up spot. The White Hall Farm's BE QUICK had a good trip sitting just off of the speed and stayed on to be third.
Race 6.
The sixth went to Roger Snow, Don Danard and Conrad Rozenek's BOITANO ($3.30), who was much closer to the pace than usual under Kimal Santo and that proved to be a winning move as he was able to strike the front on the final bend and held his advantage to the wire for trainer Mel Snow in 1:45.31. The Hastings Racing Club's PRINCE CAIRO ran another good one as he stayed well back off of the quick early tempo then closed up ground on the rail and easily ran into the second spot for trainer John Snow completing a father-son Exactor. Ernie Chu, Rob and Vicky Gilker's Y VEE R turned in a huge effort setting demanding fractions of 23.96, 47.12 and 1:11.31 and stayed on gamely after being collared midway on the stretch turn finishing third under Ridge Balgobin.
Race 7.
The seventh of the day was won by Clint Willson's CHAMPIOSA ($74.10) who showed good speed with the addition of blinkers today and raced up on a sensible pace of 22.85 and 47.01 under Lenny Seecharan. The pair started to inch away on the turn but was tackled by DRILL BABY DRILL turning for home and fought on bravely to regain the lead nearing the wire to get the victory in 1:19.36. Don Danard and Mel Snow's DRILL BABY DRILL ran another solid race but was simply beat by her unlucky post draw as she suffered from a wide trip and actually made the lead in the lane but got a weary nearing the line. The Renfrew Racing's CAROLINA GENT was away awkwardly and had to use up horse to stay near the leaders continued to rally on the rail ending up a good third for rider Kuri Powell and trainer Mark Freeman.
