Hastings Review — Sunday, August 7th
Race 1.
The Sunday first went to the Willow Creek Farm's IRISH LUNA ($9.90) who was given a clever ride by Silvino Morales sitting just in behind the speed then snuck through on the inside to get up for the victory for trainer Steve Henson in a quick 1:17.81 for the six and a half furlongs. Cameron Hill and the Forster Stables ALWAYS IN CHARGE stalked the slow early splits and kept grinding away to get up for second under apprentice Kimal Santo for Hall-of-Fame conditioner Dave Forster. Jordan Froelich's JERSEY LILLIE had everything her own way on the lead 22.94 and 46.90 but just ran out of gas late and ended up third.
Race 2.
The second of the day was easily won by JG Williamson Racing's ARTISTIC JEWLER ($5.50) taking advantage of a torrid pace duel she looped by the field to win by in 1:45.31 giving trainer Steve Henson both legs of the early Daily Double. JT Racing and Ryan Deyotte's RICHARDS COMMAND had a tough trip checking early and was very sharp behind the quick pace which took a little starch out of her late kick but she did manage to get up for second. George Gilbert's TAKE CHARGE GWEN was caught up in a speed duel which saw her duel through lightning splits of 23.41, 46.94 and 1:12.40 when she made the lead approaching he far turn she was immediately tackled by the winner which didn’t do her any favours as she was caught for second and finished third.
Race 3.
The third went Rob and Sheena Maybin's BELLAROO ($3.60) who settled well back off of another crazy pace the cruised up the rail and swamped the speed at the eighth pole and drew away for an easy score under Silvino Morales in 1:18.24. Willow Creek Farm's DO YOU WANNA GO also relaxed well off the pace and just got up for the runner-up spot under apprentice Ridge Balgobin. Willow Creek Farm's BAKFIRE BABY set a blazing tempo with VALERIE VALESKI and those two carved out a 22.01 opening quarter and then a 45.80 half-mile and both were exhausted on the final turn but BAKFIRE BABY stayed game and just missed second ending up in the third spot.
Claims: Valerie Valeski was claimed by owner/trainer Demetris Topouzis
Race 4.
The fourth of the afternoon in a hard fought battle went to the Willow Creek Farm's LAUGH WITH ME ($4.80) who just lasted after racing on the outside throughout much of the trip under Amadeo Perez to win in 1:17.52. The win gave trainer Steve Henson his third winner of the day. The Hammer Racing Stables RING OF KERRY was a little wide early then secured the rail approaching the backstretch and battled gamely through sensible splits of 22.95, 46.66 and just missed . The RNH Stables SANAWAR was travelling well at the end but could only claim third money beaten by about a length in a good effort.
Race 5.
The fifth race on the card went to the Canyon Farm's MONTE ($8.40) who used his brilliant speed to his advantage and set quick fractions of 22.13 and 46.07 then drew off to a big lead turning for home under Gabriel Morales and was tired in the late stages but found the line first in 1:19.22 for trainer Craig MacPherson. Russ and Lois Bennett's SHOWMAN had a tough trip after breaking well and ran on to be second. Willow Lake Farms and Stables and ROLLIE'S SPIRIT ran close to the pace and stayed on well to be a close third in an encouraging effort.
Race 6.
The sixth of the afternoon was easily taken down by Steen Reggelsen, Kathy Mydske and the Lindsay Racing Stables VALUE MAX ($3.00) who sat a perfect trip under Amadeo Perez had to await racing room briefly heading into the far turn and once clear ran away for a clear victory in 1:18.56. George Gilbert's HARVEST DAY set an easy early tempo of 23.14 and 46.97 and was running well to the wire but was simply outrun and ended up in the runner-up spot. Michelle Roberts-Henson, Brad Henson, Randy Henson, Dan Henson and Trevor Irwin's BARNEY GOOGLE was in midpack early and made a solid run late to get the third placing.
Race 7.
The last of the day went to Rob and Sheena Maybin's GWEN ($3.40) who sat an ideal trip off of the speed and when asked by Efrain Hernandez on the final turn she proved best to beat the boys in 1:18.84. The Taylor Veloz Group, Dreamtime Stable, Todd Foster and Bruce Unwin’s KEEPINGTHEDREAM used his inside post to gain the early lead and led the field through fractions of 22.92 and 47.18 and stayed on bravely but had to settle for second money. Renfrew Racing's CAROLINA GENT didn’t get the best of trips in behind the slow pace and shook free from being bottled up on the rail and rallied to gain the third spot.
