A very pleasant autumn afternoon with pleny of bright weather, as a good-sized crowd turned out to see two keenly fought $100,000 Stakes events, as well as say farewell to the remarkable Infinite Patience. Following some heavy rain in the days prior, the track was described as ‘good’ all afternoon and produced plenty of close finishes with nobody winning by more than a single length.
Race 1.
The Saturday opener saw Pat Jarvis, Dan Lee, Nigel Reid and Roberta Staley's WIRLY GIRLY ($7.20) break alertly, then yield to relax off of a slow pace (24.70, 49.36, 1:14.27) under Bebeto Harvey, before taking the lead to the stretch and just lasting for the gritty win in 1:46.71 for trainer Pat Jarvis. Renfrew Racing, B and B Racing, No Trump Stable, Matt Elder and Bill Breen's MATSQUI sat a good trip behind the speed, then shifted out three wide on the backside and ground-out a good second under Brian Boodramsingh for trainer Mark Freeman. Canmor Farm's ABOVE AVERAGE set a leisurely pace under Kerron Khelawan and led until the stretch but got a little tired late to be third for Mark Cloutier.
Race 2 — The $100,000 Ballerina Stakes (Listed)
The second race was the $100,000 Ballerina for fillies and mares going 1 1/8 miles in what was among the best races of the year, as Bill DeCoursey and RNH Stables’ INFINITE PATIENCE ($2.80) won a back and forth stretch-long battle with Swift Thoroughbreds’ BUNNY in 1:51.38 over the good track conditions. INFINITE PATIENCE was making her final start, which ends with career earnings of $928,700. She was ridden by Antonio Reyes for trainer Barbara Heads. BUNNY had a perfect trip behind the speed and turned in another top notch effort under Silvino Morales, losing narrowly after looking like a winner for trainer Dino Condilenios. Dennis Dale, Morris Peter and Ed Welsh's AIR FORCE set a contested pace (23.21, 47.37, 1:12.42) under Brian Boodramsingh, stayed strong and ended up third for Keith Pedersen.
Race 3.
The third race went to John Snow’s CHICKASAW ($6.80) who took advantage of some fast fractions, rallying from far off the pace under Brian Boodramsingh, to get up for the victory in a fast 1:45.95 for trainer John Snow . Minnaloushe Stables and Dave Milburn's SLOOP JOHN B set a lively pace under Learie Seecharan (23.50, 47.14, 1:11.73), was very determined and led late but just missed in a valiant effort, winding up second for trainer Dave Milburn. Hastings Racing Club's PRINCE CAIRO ran on sharply late under Bebeto Harvey to just miss in a photo for second, ending up third for trainer John Snow.
Race 4.
The fourth race was won by Swift Thoroughbreds’ HORATIO ($18.60), who parlayed a brilliant ride by Silvino Morales to settle behind the speed and tip out three-wide to get the win in a rapid 1:17.04 for conditioner Dino Condilenios. B and B Racing, Vintage LGA, Mark Freeman and Mark Cloutier's DEAL EM was held in reserve early under Amadeo Perez and made a strong move late to be second for trainer Mark Cloutier. Canyon Farm's MR MORRIS missed the break and rushed up to join a three-way battle (22.10, 45.55) which was fast and he tired a bit in the stretch to be third for trainer Craig MacPherson.
Race 5 — The $100,000 BC Premier’s Handicap (Gr3)
The fifth of the afternoon was the $100,000 BC Premiers going a mile and three-eighths and, proving to be the best stayer, was Peter Redekop's APPREHEND ($3.20), who was content to track a very slow tempo in the three-path under Amadeo Perez, then sprinted home late when it counted to win in 2:18.79 for trainer Barbara Heads. The Felicella’s SUNBIRD showed a little more interest early under Antonio Reyes and sat second behind the very slow pace (24.71, 50.32, 1:17.42 and 1:42.04), took the lead to the stretch but could not hold off the winner, finishing a good second for trainer Terry Jordan. Hastings Horsepower and Motley Crew's SETTECENTO set the fractions under Learie Seecharan and was in contention until checking briefly on the final turn, ending up with another solid Stakes performance for Dave Milburn.
Race 6.
The sixth race went to Georges and Terry Georgeopoulos’ FORT LANGLEY ($10.00), who was rationed off of a slow pace by Silvino Morales then engaged the leaders on the final turn and raced clear late for the victory in 1:45.75 for trainer Dino Condilenios. Sasquatch Stables’ SOMETHING ELUSIVE was sent for lead by Kimal Santo and they set sensible (24.72, 50.28, 1:14.78) splits together and gave way grudgingly to the winner, ending up an impressive runner-up for trainer Greg Beneen. Pete Gregory, Cody and Kelsi Wellard's TEXAS MOONSHINE was secured on the rail behind the pace by Brian Boodramsingh and they ran-on well late, finishing third for trainer Pete Gregory.
