Racing Around

Another gorgeous hint of approaching summer, with cloudless skies and temperatures again in the 80s, as a big Father’s Day crowd came out to enjoy the racing in the same way they have been doing at Hastings for more than 130 years. The track was fast and fair all afternoon
Sunday’s Racing Round-up, by Mike Heads
Race 1.
The first race on the Father’s Day program went to Roy and Dixie Jacobson’s homebred, ANNIKA'S SONG ($9.90), who sat chilly on a moderate pace (22.49, 46.13) with Richard Balgobin up and they easily outsprinted their rivals to the wire in 1:16.70 for trainer Mark Cloutier. J G Williamson Racing’s MISS UNION was taken back behind the duo up front by Kimal Santo, tipped out three-wide turning for home and grabbed second money nearing the line for Steve Henson. Lois Bennett's VIVA LA VINO settled nicely on the inside under Antonio Reyes and seemed to be travelling well, but couldn’t stay with the winner and ended up third for Barbara Heads.
Race 2
The second of the day was won by Rob and Sheena Maybin's AVE'S IN COMMAND ($3.60), who was nicely rated by Chris Mamdeen through sensible splits (22.41, 45.55), got clear of his competition turning into the stretch and stayed on gamely to win well in 1:16.85 for trainer Rob Maybin. Dennis Dale, Dynamic Stables, Cathy and Kelly Rycroft's BIG UNION made a big run from last place to make things interesting at the top of the lane and checked in a clear runner-up for trainer Nicole Rycroft. Mike D'Addabbo’s KNOPFLER was in a perfect striking position behind the speed under Silvino Morales, looked to be a threat as they swung for home, but had to settle for third in a good effort for Dino Condilenios.
Race 3.
The third race of the afternoon saw Paul Lesmaurier's OVERLY FAST ($4.70) get a dream run behind a pace duel under Amadeo Perez and, when given his cue, he drew off to an impressive score in 1:44.40 for trainer Paul Lesmaurier. Minnaloushe Stables and Dave Milburn's SLOOP JOHN B raced on the pace (24.44, 48.29, 1:12.80) with Learie Seecharan giving the orders and they won the pace battle but just got reeled-in late, finishing a very good second for trainer Dave Milburn. TC Racing's TEX HANLEY was the inside speed with Kimal Santo at the controls, but they were always head or neck back and, despite being in an intimidating position and drifting back at the far turn, rallied again in deep stretch in a better-than-looked performance for conditioner Rob Gilker.
Race 4.

The fourth race went to the Hastings Racing Club's PRINCE CAIRO ($7.60), who sat behind the speed in a nice spot under Bebeto Harvey before seizing an opportunity to dive through on the rail in the lane and scooting on for the victory in 1:18.75 for trainer Tammy Snow. Bruce Unwin’s T'WASBAKKENTHEDAY made an impressive return to the races after a two year absence, setting all the fractions (23.53, 47.35) under Chris Mamdeen and was just reeled-in late, ending up a good second. Jim Jamieson, Darryl Hammond, Andrew Barnes, Chad Hunter and Tammy Snow's CHICKASAW was much closer to the pace this time, which gave him a better opportunity and Richard Balgobin took advantage, ending up with an improved third place run for trainer Tammy Snow.
Race 5.

The fifth was won by Nicole Droder's LOVE THE NEST ($4.40), who was held far back off a torrid early pace under Silvino Morales, started to make good ground nearing the stretch, hit the front in mid-stretch and just held his margin in 1:16.76 for trainer Craig MacPherson. Nigel Reid and Bryan and Carol Anderson's STRAIT OF GEORGIA was content to trail early, taking advantage of the quick pace under Antonio Reyes, and they got in contention entering the stretch, just missing at the wire for trainer Barbara Heads. Nancy Betts’ FINDING WAYS got caught up in a wicked pace duel (21.64, 44.83) with Kerron Khelawan in the saddle and they won the pace battle but couldn’t hold off the closers, checking in third.
Race 6
The sixth of the day saw Jim and Anne Alendal’s homebred, MINA MARINA, ($5.10) lead the field throughout under Kimal Santo, setting unpressured fractions of 23.04 and 46.80, before cruising home a comfortable winner in 1:17.74 for conditioner Cindy Krasner. Don Danard's WHY NOTS A WYNNER turned in a big effort in the class drop under apprentice Richard Balgobin, finishing a good second for trainer Mel Snow. Mel Snow , Warren Jensen, Doug Corsan and Len Houweling’s MISS LARUE showed good late speed to narrowly get the third spot under Chris Mamdeen for Mel Snow.
