A cool, breezy but gorgeous fall afternoon, with cloudless skies. Unsurprisingly, given the weather conditions, the track was fast all afternoon with all bar the last race going to horses on, or very close to, the lead throughout.
Race 1.
The Saturday opener saw Rob and Sheena Maybin's AVE'S IN COMMAND ($9.30) lead the field through quick splits of 22.13 and 45.03 under Chris Mamdeen, then march clear turning for home and stay strong to the wire to win in a sparkling time of 1:16.60 for trainer Rob Maybin. BFA Holdings’ WISE MARKET was settled far back off of the pace and rallied up the inside under Kimal Santo to make things interesting in the stretch for conditioner Mark Cloutier. They took home second money. Wil-a-Way Farms CALAMAZEUS was in a good striking position behind the leaders and ran on well late to be third with Fraser Aebly up for trainer Pat Jarvis.
Race 2.
The second of the afternoon once again went to owners Rob and Sheena Maybin as their recent claim PETERSON LANDING ($10.50) crushed the field in a dazzling 1:17.88 under Chris Mamdeen, giving the connections the Early Double. Wayne Oliver's ANZAC BAY was shuffled back a bit early and ran on strongly to be a clear second under Kerron Khelawan for trainer Tara Neigel. Larry Potozny's ELLAMEISTER was void of early speed and closed up wide under Amadeo Perez to get the third spot for trainer Dino Condilenios.
Race 3.
The third went to Russ and Lois Bennett's VIVA LA DIVA ($8.50) who was far happier in maiden company in her second career start. She showed good speed and was never collared under Fraser Aebly, winning nicely in 1:12.02 for conditioner Barbara Heads. Peter Redekop's ACOUSTIC MELODY improved in her first start in Vancouver as she sat just off of the winner and ran on well to be second. Don and Sue Danard's BROOKE MAGIC was impressive in her debut and, after a tardy beginning, she cruised up the inside to finish up a close third.
Race 4.
The fourth went to Willow Creek Farm's C C SUNRISE ($10.50), who was allowed to settle just off of a slow early cadence with Amadeo Perez aboard. They came to challenge at the top of the stretch and out-gamed her rivals in 1:18.84 for trainer Steve Henson. WYN Racing Stables’ DRILL BABY DRILL was quite comfortable earning her 11th runner-up effort from 23 starts as she settled behind the speed, snuck through on the inside to threaten the winner, but ended up second. G.O. Stables’ PENALTY TO RANGERS struck the front under Silvino Morales, getting easy splits of 22.82 and 46.37, but couldn’t match strides with the winner and settled for third.
Race 5.
The fifth went to the heavily favored TOBESUNNY ($3.20) who is owned and trained by Bruce Unwin and was cleverly ridden by Amadeo Perez. The duo settled off of a sensible pace and drew off late for the victory in 1:45.41. Joe and Gloria Russo's STAR FINALITY, who set the pace (24.06, 47.68 and 1:13.63) under Learie Seecharan, ran huge; matching strides with the eventual winner until the sixteenth pole but had to settle for second. Pocket Aces Racing Stable's SILVER ARROW was held in reserve early and made a good run late to be third.
Race 6.
The sixth of the day saw Roger Snow, Don Danard and Conrad Rozenek's SPACE ($4.10) fight all the way on the head end under Brian Boodramsingh (24.04, 47.36 and 1:12.01) and just last out in a tough battle to win in 1:43.58 for conditioner Mel Snow. George and Donna Gilbert’s COUNTERACT took back off of the early pace then put in a big run on the final turn to challenge and just missed in a huge effort under Silvino Morales for trainer Mark Cloutier. Canyon Farm's PURSUE was away poorly and left with a lot to do but managed to close late to be third.
Race 7.
The last on the Saturday program went to Rob and Sheena Maybin's NEIGHNEIGH ($10.70), who looped the field from far back to score in 1:17.23 under Chris Mamdeen for trainer Rob Maybin — completing a three-timer for handler, rider and owners. Freedom Farms, Peter Tom and More Rewards Syndicate’s ADDENDUM settled comfortably on the rail by Kerron Khelawan, then pushed up to challenge turning for home and just missed in a big effort for trainer Tara Neigel. George Gilbert's BELCARRA PARK blazed away to the front under Kimal Santo through ambitious splits of 21.61 and 44.53 and got very weary late, ending up third for trainer Mark Cloutier.
