A lack of breeze made for a particularly warm afternoon for racegoers at Hastings on Sunday as temperatures nudged north of 26 degrees. Post-parades were kept to a minimum to help the horses and the track was fast all day.
Race 1.
The Sunday opener went to Julie Balenzano and Susanna Calendino's ENGLISH BAY TEDDY ($3.60) who cruised (23.20, 46.97) to a wire-to-wire score under Brian Boodramsingh, coming home much the best in 1:18.12 for trainer Rob VanOverschot. Sharlea Stable's BARBERRY BANDIT was comfortably positioned on the rail in behind the speed by Fraser Aebly then made a run on the final turn without threatening the winner but was easily second. Jim Strachan's SOMETHING ELUSIVE was towards the rear early and was put in the game nearing the quarter-pole by Learie Seecharan and ended up checking in third.
Race 2.
The second was won by Stuart Carmichael and Mark Freeman’s WICKED NIGHT ($4.90), who rated kindly off of the very slow pace that was being set then out-sprinted everyone to the finish under Amadeo Perez to win in 1:18.39 for trainer Mark Cloutier. Ironside Stables’ DESIRED OUTCOME was held back on the rail behind the speed, produced a sharp move in between horses at the top of the stretch to gain the runner-up spot for Brian Boodramsingh and Rob VanOverschot. Mauro Comensoli's STANFORD NORTH was making his first start of the year and set easy fractions of 23.58 and 47.54 but couldn’t stay with the top two in the closing stages and took home third money.
Race 3.
The third race on the card saw another big performance from Michelle Roberts-Henson, Brad Henson, Randy Henson, Dan Henson and Trevor Irwin's BARNEY GOOGLE ($11.70), who used his usual last to first style to win in the clear under Amadeo Perez for trainer Rob Henson in 1:45.81. The Minnaloushe Stables and Dave Milburn's YOU DON'T OWN ME was off a step slow, which put him in a difficult position, but Learie Seecharan called on him leaving the backstretch and he looped the field to gain command but couldn’t hold off the winner and finished a clear second. D and E Racing's LIZZIES GIRL was on the rail throughout and closed up smartly to get the third spot which was a good run considering she was in against the boys today.
Race 4.
The fourth went to the WYN Racing Stables’ FILLY FATALE ($3.40), who set ambitious fractions under Kimal Santo in her first attempt at a mile and a sixteenth (23.12, 47.90 and 1:13.90) and remained resilient right to the finish, winning in 1:47.96 for conditioner Larry Grieve. Ralph Jesiak's TUXEDO was away well and opted to stay clear of the runaway leader. She started to engage her on the backside and seemed to be going better but couldn’t get by and had to settle for second. MJD Stables’ STOPSHOPPINGSHELLY turned in a much better effort as she closed up sharply from well back to be a flying third at the end.
Claims:
FILLY FATALE was claimed by owners Renfrew Racing, B+B Racing, No Trump Stable, Bill Breen Racing, Matt Elder for trainer Mark Freeman
Race 5.
The fifth was won by George Gilbert's BLACKSTONE ($8.40), who took a big dip in class and led this group of maidens under Antonio Reyes throughout, setting cozy splits of 23.53 and 47.32 and went on to win in 1:19.13 for trainer Barbara Heads. Triple 8 Racing Stables’ DEANARROW had a good trip in behind the speed on the rail and stayed on for second. Ironside Stables’ SHE'S ON FIRE was up close early then drifted back on the final bend but came on late to be third and just missed getting second.
Race 6.
The sixth race of the day went to Joe and Gloria Russo's DEPUTY'S DANCER ($14.30) who was patiently ridden by Kerron Khelawan, tracking a blazing pace (21.21, 44.98) on the rail before angling outside of the tiring leader at the top of the stretch and went on to victory in 1:18.39 for trainer Patty Leaney. Kent Bird and Dino Condilenios’ BETTER TONE was void of early speed and took advantage of the rail opening and got up to be second. Terry Georgeopoulos and Georges Georgeopoulos’ DYNAMITER was cutting back in distance and ground out a hard-fought third coming from off the pace.
Race 7.
The seventh on the Sunday program saw Gabriele Mathussek’s PADDY D'ORO ($5.90) ride the rails to victory under Amadeo Perez, getting up late to win in 1:18.94 for trainer Carl Lausten. Barbara Heads’ ACE DEUCE broke on top but reined in to be far back off the pace and came with a wide run late to be second. Harold and Sandra Barroby's IT'S IN COMMAND controlled a slow early tempo (23.42, 47.05) with clever handling by Kuri Powell. They led until deep stretch and finished a close third.
