Sunday's Previews
Pineapple Tidbits features in a highly-competitive 'blue collar' day at Hastings this Sunday after the Stakes excitement of Saturday
ROAD CLOSURE got stuck three-wide in a speed duel on his debut and, despite being long odds-on, tired visibly close home and was caught by the late-charging Accordingly at the wire - with today’s rival WICKED NIGHT just behind. He mixed it with some top names last season and is the one they have to beat here in what is a competitive-looking maiden. CAIRO CRUSADER finished a long way behind Jose Jose last month, but so did everybody and he looks to be an improving sort. TAPITS CHOICE, meanwhile, also saw Jose Jose as a distant spot on the horizon but endured some traffic issues and may be closer today.
ISLAND LIVING takes some class relief to appear here and wasn’t beaten too far by Tam Tricky last time. She won her maiden two weeks prior to that, runs as though the extra yardage won’t inconvenience her and is definitely one for the shortlist. MISS THE HYPE went gate-to-wire on opening weekend but then lost out to the mercurial Silk Stilettos next time, with subsequent winner Cocorita just behind. She returns to more-or-less the level she last won at and has run well at the distance. TEXAS HUMOR split Just Misty and Groovy Girl last time and is another who has solid form over today’s distance.
GORKY PARK looked to relish the extra real estate when chasing home easy winner Appellant with MCMURPHY just behind, and while there’s clearly little between today’s two rivals, he is a worthy favourite. PADDY D’ORO meanwhile is another who has won previously over the 8½-furlong course and can’t be left out of the equation. VANCOUVER HUNTER makes some appeal for a minor placing now he gets a chance at the longer distance.
PINEAPPLE TIDBITS has run perfectly well enough in both starts this season to suggest it’s only a matter of time before the popular claimer is back to the form that saw her bag five wins last year. The marginal drop in class will also help. WALKINTHEWALK won on her seasonal bow and then finished second to Bellaroo next time. That form was franked yesterday when Bellaroo won again and Walkinthewalk is a key contender here. ANOTHERSUNNYDAY takes a little class relief and a repeat of her opening weekend effort puts her right at the heart of affairs.
Not an easy maiden to decipher but LENT ME TWENTY’s two career starts, and especially her rallying effort behind Indyetta last time, with SWEET AS HONEY further back, should see her sent off favourite. NINE O’CLOCK CEASAR makes her career debut, but has been working well in the mornings and, while winning at the first attempt is not an easy task, her pedigree compares favourably with most of these. The consistent TEXAS LEGACY has bumped into some useful horses in her previous two outings and this looks, on paper at least, like an easier opportunity to get off the mark after hitting the board six times in seven starts.
QUEEN OF ATTITUDE went down by just a length to Pretty Aria on her season debut and a repeat of that performance would put her very close here. She had LASTING LIGHT (and KICK UP THE DUST) behind that day and there’s no obvious reason why the positions should be reversed today. LIZZIE’S GIRL beat yesterday’s winner ANAAMY by more than seven lengths last month and even though this represents a much tougher assignment, she’s one for the shortlist.
This represents a more realistic opportunity for class-dropping SILARONE, who may be worth another chance after finding some traffic trouble last time. Prior to that, he chased home runaway winner Lucky Force and the useful Filly Fatale and there is nothing of that calibre here. REMEMBERTHEALAMO will have plenty of support after his third-place finish behind Barney Google and ROLLIE’S SPIRIT, while CHAMPIOSA should improve a little after he finished sixth in the same race on what was his season debut.
