Sunday’s Previews
A fascinating maiden contest is among the highlights of another exciting seven-race card on Sunday that also sees the Corgi dogs descend on Hastings for the second of the tracks Dog Days of Summer
GROOVIN’ IS BAK faces winners for the first time after breaking his maiden last month and, while this will be a tougher assignment, he’s been bumping into some fancy sorts this season and doesn’t look out of his depth here. EARS TO US is a worthy favourite after going down by just a head to Self Serving last time when attempting to go gate-to-wire. CRYPTO MUNNY will need to improve again on his previous two Hastings efforts but he has from from California that would make him a big danger. The drop back to 6 1/2 furlongs shouldn’t hurt, either.
C C SUNRISE takes some class relief here and if she can transfer her form to the ‘long’ course’ she may take some stopping. She wasn’t beaten too far by Groovin’ Is Bak last time and this represents her best opportunity so far to get off the mark. Fraser Aebly sticks with DEANARROW after riding C C Sunrise in her previous four starts and will be hoping the 4yo gelding can go one better than his recent second to Mount Loki over this distance. TEXAS MOONSHINE finished a fair way behind DAPPER DON when they chased home Kiki’s Sundancer last time but if he repeats his run before that, when a rallying fourth to English Bay Teddy, he’s one for the shortlist.
DREAM B chased home likely favourite STANFORD NORTH when the pair were behind BC Cup Sir Winston Churchill Derby Trial fourth Space last month. That was an excellent career debut by Dream B and, coming from a barn which takes a patient approach with first-timers, she could improve past her more experienced rival. HE’S A SAINT had BUZZINGA KARMA behind when second to Emperorofthenorth last time and has been knocking on the door for some time.
Third in last season’s Ascot Graduation Stakes, LOGICAL AL has been thereabouts in each of his four runs this season and this looks a good opportunity for him to get off the mark for the year. He had BETTER TONE behind him in a muddling affair when second to Erlich over this distance last time and is the one they’ll have to beat. ENGLISH BAY TEDDY won his maiden in style two starts ago and then stepped up in class and ran well enough when fourth to Time Ticker to suggest he can be a player here if able to transfer his ability to the mile-and-sixteenth course. REMEMBERTHEALAMO and SELF SERVING also take on the ‘long’ course for the first time. There doesn’t look too much between them on paper, although Self Serving couldn’t get closer than fourth to ‘Alamo’ when they clashed last month and then won at the next time of asking.
A win for Logical Al or Better Tone in the previous race would bring a warm glow to connections of JERSEYS IMAGE, who was fourth behind the pair when they all chased home Erlich last time. That was his best effort since winning back in May and a similar effort here would make him a major player. ASKMENOQUESTIONS isn’t easy to weigh-up but he has solid claims based on some of his previous efforts in far deeper waters than this. He’s fired blanks both times he’s tried the ‘long’ course at Hastings and his stamina will need to be taken on trust. SILARONE makes his first start for new connections after being claimed last time when third to Dynamiter and Silver Arrow over this distance. A repeat close to that and he can feature at the business end.
NINE OCLOCK CEASER went down swinging in her two most recent starts, beaten by a nose and a head respectively. She deserves a win and can get it if repeating either effort. TAM TRICKY was behind ‘Ceaser’ in both those contests and it’s hard to see the places being reversed here. FILLY FATALE’s season is going gangbusters. Also making her first start for new connections since being claimed, she’s won, or been second, in her four starts this term and if she doesn’t run Friday evening (she’s entered), should be a major player again. MISS THE HYPE is another making her debut for a new barn and, like Filly Fatale, has won or been second in each of her five outings this year. These are marginally deeper waters than her last run behind Artistic Jewler, but she shouldn’t be far away again.
RACING RIVER goes for a hat-trick here following two solid wins in which he had today’s rivals FOOT SOLDIER, MORETHANSOULTITLE and QUAGMIRE behind. Leading rider Amadeo Perez reunites with PARKER POINT in what is the 5yo’s first run for new connections since being claimed. He also returns to sprinting and if he can repeat his last effort at the distance, when fourth to Finding Ways and Tiz Vicious, should be at the heart of the excitement.
