Hastings’ Race Reviews, Saturday Oct 8
Race 1.
The first of the day was won by the D and E Racing Stables BILLS SMOKN BULLET ($9.40), who sat a perfect trip under Scott Williams lying in third behind the speed and then was produced on the final turn and he ran by a stubborn KHAIKY'S COMMAND to get the win in a rapid 1:16.81 for trainer Tara Neigel. Joe and Gloria Russo's KHAIKY’S COMMAND ran another good race setting all the fractions (22.04, 45.25) which were fast and he couldn’t quite stay the trip but did well to be second for trainer Jaymie Pearman. Michelle Roberts-Henson's RACING RIVER was a little farther back than usual and came running strongly in the stretch to claim third money.
Race 2.
The second of the afternoon went to Rob and Sheena Maybin's. OSTRACIZE ($6.60), who was away a step slow but quickly assumed a nice spot in behind the speed stayed covered up until the final bend when Efrain Hernandez tipped her out to the three path and was able to get up in the last stride for the win in 1:45.23 for trainer Rob Maybin. The Last Call Racing Stable and Cathy Bornn’s JUST MAKE BELIEVE raced up on the pace setting comfortable splits of 24.14, 48.16 and 1:13.88 and was getting the better of his pace rival but couldn’t quite hold off the winner and finished an unlucky runner-up. The WYN Racing Stables ICE BREAKER was ultra game again setting the pace and led into the stretch but was had to settle for third today.
Race 3 — Ballerina Stakes (Listed)
The third event of the day was the $100,000 Ballerina for fillies and mares going a mile and an eighth and as expected Bill DeCoursey and the RNH Stables INFINITE PATIENCE made short work of things, galloping off to the front effortlessly under Antonio Reyes in 23.88, 47.78 and 1:11.64 then cruising home for the victory in 1:49.34 for trainer Barbara Heads. Russ and Lois Bennett's SOLARITY turned in her usual workmanlike performance under Scott Williams and checked in second and the WYN Racing Stables KLOEPATRA ended up third.
Race 4 — Caitlin Callahan Memorial
The fourth race of the day was won by Roger Snow and Mo Doyle's BODEGA ($8.00) who settled comfortably in fourth early on the inside and stayed there the entire trip, catching a good break when the speed drifted out and apprentice Fraser Aebly snuck through on the rail to get the win for trainer Mel Snow in 1:44.83. The RNH Stables SANAWAR broke well and sat a perfect trip in behind the speed under Antonio Reyes and waited until the stretch turn but got fanned wide turning for home and had to settle for second. Helen Jewell’s APPELLANT was far back early and made a huge wide move on the final turn and was able to secure third money.
Race 5.
The fifth was taken by the Canyon Farm's BACK SHACK ($9.60)who was in good position early tracking the speed under Ridge Balgobin and when asked at the quarter pole he responded with a good kick to win going away in 1:19.23 for conditioner Craig MacPherson. Clive Harding, Lyle and Mark Johnson's ARUNDEL CASTLE was impressive with her powerful stretchmove under Gabriel Morales and looked like one that prosper when the distances get farther as she flew late to get second. Jamie Demetrick's SWANGIN set a sensible pace (22.40, 46.72) and held the lead at the far turn but couldn’t stay with the top two.
Race 6 — BC Premiers Handicap Stake (G3)
The sixth of the day was the $100,000 BC Premiers going a mile and an eighth and taking home the top prize was Bryan and Carol Anderson's AT ATTENTION, who was closer than usual under Antonio Reyes behind a quick pace sitting in the pocket behind the speed and was fortunate to get out on the final turn and raced gamely to the wire to win in 1:49.43 for trainer Barbara Heads. Peter Redekop's AROLLERCOASTERRIDE was absolutely brilliant in defeat as the three year old set solid fractions of 22.85, 46.45 and 1:11.22 and when collared by the winner he fought valiantly all the way to the wire only to lose by a nose. The Tod Mountain Thoroughbreds STAY FANTASTIC ran another solid race checking third.
Race 7.
The final event of the day went to the Canmor Farms, Maureen Goss and Adrian Trombley’s ANAAMY ($7.50) who took a nice trip in behind a three way speed duel, cruised up the inside to engage the leaders at the top of the stretch under Silvino Morales and drew off to nice score in 1:18.77 for trainer Mark Cloutier. Maureen Byrne's STRIKING VALUE dropped in class and looked to be a danger at long odds but ended up with a much improved effort finishing second under apprentice Fraser Aebly. Rob and Sheena Maybin's GWEN had a rough trip being bounced around early then dropping back but showed good courage coming back on to be third under Ridge Balgobin.
