Jockey Chris Mamdeen also rode two winners
The Friday Night handle was $556,771.
Cigar smoke, whisky fumes and music added an exotic air to an already hot and humid night at Hastings, as a big crowd came out to watch six pulsating Friday Night races. The track was fast with five of the six heats going to horses on, or close to, the pace
Race 1.
The first on Friday night saw Rob and Sheena Maybin's JERSEY LILLIE ($3.10) turn in a big performance on the class drop as she led through contested fractions of 22.46 and 45.71 under Chris Mamdeen, then proved best in the lane to get the win in 1:17.34 for trainer Rob Maybin. Don Danard and Mel Snow's ROSE OF TEXAS was pressuring the pace from the start with Brian Boodramsingh at the controls, but they couldn't quite stay with the winner and ended a clear second for trainer Mel Snow. WYN Racing Stables’ DRILL BABY DRILL was in a perfect striking position behind the speed under Kimal Santo. She didn’t threaten the top two, although she did win the three-way battle for the third position for trainer Larry Grieve.
Race 2.
The second of the evening went to Minnaloushe Stables and Dave Milburn's YOU DON'T OWN ME ($10.90), who was afforded a slow and uncontested lead of 25.82, 51.14 and 1:15.67 under Chris Mamdeen and just had enough left to find the finish first in 1:46.70 for Dave Milburn. Willow Creek Farm's SELF SERVING made a mess of the start, which all but ended his chances. He was travelling best at the end under Antonio Reyes and took home an unlucky second-place prize for conditioner, Steve Henson. Mel Snow, Doug Corsan and Len Houweling’s SLEW'S DA BOSS was placed in a good position by Brian Boodramsingh behind the slow pace and ran-on late to be a close third for trainer Mel Snow.
Race 3.
The third was won by Canmor Farms and Bud Malette's ACCORDINGLY ($3.10), who did not disappoint his backers as he led from gate-to-wire, despite being pressured (23.57, 48.37, 1:13.77) on the pace, and stayed-on strongly to earn a hard-fought victory under Amadeo Perez in 1:46.66 for trainer Mark Cloutier. Rob and Sheena Maybin's RICK'S DANCER was held behind the pace and rallied smartly up the inside by Chris Mamdeen to gain the runner-up spot for Rob Maybin. Hawaiian Shirt Guys ‘ NU SOUP FOR BABY battled wide on the pace with apprentice Taylor Jeszenszky, was then able to get into the two-path and they ran-on well together to be third for trainer Dino Condilenios.
Claims:
NU SOUP FOR BABY was claimed by owners Shamrock Stables & Brian Phillips for trainer Brian Phillips
Race 4.
The fourth of the night saw John Snow’s CHICKASAW ($8.40) be an unlucky loser at the finish line, as Brian Boodramsingh had to ease his way through a tight spot at the sixteenth pole, losing momentum slightly and that ended up being the difference. However, after a very lengthy stewards’ inquiry, his luck changed as he was promoted to first for trainer John Snow, getting a much deserved victory. Dave and Sylvea Gregory's QUATRE BAK raced on a quick early tempo (22.14, 46.01) under Kimal Santo and was game to the wire, checking-in a close third for conditioner Edgar Mendoza and was subsequently moved up to second after the DQ. Mike D'Addabbo’s STANFORD NORTH had the outside post, which ended up costing him as he raced most of the journey in the three path under Amadeo Perez and finished fourth before being moved up to third after the DQ for trainer Rob Henson. The original winner was BRIAN'S DE LEIGHT, but he was disqualified and placed last for interference to GROOVIN IS BAK after he drifted over during the backside run, causing his rival to clip heels and costing him a chance at a better placing.
Race 5.
The fifth on the card was won by Blue Willow Dairy’s DAPHNE ($7.80), who was very impressive tonight, taking on all challengers with Silvino Morales aboard and battling through taxing splits (22.31, 44.80) before drawing away to a big score in 1:16.57 for trainer Dave Forster. Pat Jarvis, Dan Lee, Nigel Reid and Roberta Staley's WIRLY GIRLY continued her successful ways since arriving at Hastings for conditioner Pat Jarvis, as she secured a nice spot on the rail with Bebeto Harvey in the saddle and they ran on stylishly to finish a good second. Canmor Farm's ABOVE AVERAGE spent the entire trip on the rail under Kerron Khelawan and closed-up well to be third for trainer Mark Cloutier.
Race 6.
The sixth of the evening went to Vintage LGA and Mark Freeman’s MISS ACCELERATE ($8.10), who was keen away from the gate, assumed a good spot on the lead under Amadeo Perez and, after battling the entire journey, she just simply wanted it more and won in a tight photo in 1:18.42 for trainer Mark Freeman. James Redekop and Stefan Ferrario's BLUEBIRD CAFE was bumped away from the gate but was able to get the rail and the lead under Kimal Santo through sensible fractions of 22.68 and 47.02. They tried right to line but ended up second-best for trainer Terry Jordan. Lillian Meehan's MINI MARKET was in a good striking position under Ridge Balgobin, but the pace was just a little too slow and she couldn’t make up the needed ground and checked in third for trainer Lillian Meehan.
Claims:
MINI MARKET was claimed by owners Willow Creek Farms for trainer Steve Henson
