Sunday’s Racing Round-Up by Mike Heads
Race 1.

The first race on the Sunday program ended up going to Trinity West Stables GEM DANCER ($14.20), who was originally second but promoted to first after a bumping incident at the top stretch. Bebeto Harvey had GEM DANCER racing on the lead through sensible splits (22.55, 46.63) and ran-on gamely to just miss in a photo, but ended getting rewarded with the victory after the D.Q. for trainer Tammy Snow. Stuart Carmichael , Jim Vilvang, Bill Randall and Maureen Goss’ FLOYD was sharp early and contested the early fractions, was impeded at the eighth pole and was moved up to the second spot for trainer Mark Cloutier. Larry and Margaret Getson and Frank Barroby’s MAX BOOSTER was best, winning in 1:19.61 under Richard Balgobin for trainer Frank Barroby, but lugged in ever so slightly, contacting the two inside runners entering the stretch, and the stewards deemed the contact enough to warrant a disqualification.
Race 2.
The second of the day went to Shamrock Racing Stable and Brian Phillips' NU SOUP FOR BABY ($4.90), who sat a perfect trip in behind a pace battle under Chris Mamdeen, then tipped out three-wide turning for home and breezed by for the win in 1:17.44 for trainer Brian Phillips. Last Call Racing Stable and Cathy Bornn’s FRASER LANDING galloped up to join the pace under Antonio Reyes (22.93, 46.23), took the lead to the stretch but couldn’t match strides with the winner, finishing a solid second for trainer Brent Bremner. Sharlea Stable's BARBERRY BANDIT was keen early and chose to settle behind the speed on the rail, putting in a good late run to be third under Richard Balgobin for conditioner Frank Barroby.
Race 3.
The third race saw Jesse and David Morgan's CURLIN ROCKS ($3.60) set a leisurely tempo (24.40, 48.89) with Kimal Santo at the controls. They briefly lost the lead on the turn, but battled determinedly on the inside to reclaim it and held his advantage to the wire in 1:18.28 for trainer, Nicole Rycroft. Praven Sorensen and Mort Hall's DREAMB was closer than usual early with Amadeo Perez up, duelled with the winner from the quarter pole and just got beat, finishing as runner-up for trainer Barbara Heads. WYN Racing Stables KEEP IT COMING was forced to race wide through the early stages under Silvino Morales and did well to stay on for third for conditioner Larry Grieve.
Race 4.

The fourth race was won by Hastings Racing Club and Dreamtime Stable’s BECKETT'S BEST ($5.10), who made the lead easily under Kimal Santo (23.06, 46.94) and had plenty left in reserve to draw clear win in 1:16.94 for trainer Nancy Betts. Gabrielle Mathussek’s PADDY D'ORO showed interest early, getting into nice spot with Bebeto Harvey aboard tucking in behind the leaders, then produced a move on the final bend and safely secured the runner-up spot for trainer Carl Lausten. Hammer Racing Stables’ FOOT SOLDIER was hurt by the slow pace, but Antonio Reyes was able to get him rolling to be third for trainer Steve Henson.
Claims:
BECKETT’S BEST was claimed by Owners Rob & Sheena Maybin for trainer Rob Maybin
Race 5.
The fifth race of the afternoon went to Joe and Gloria Russo's BLUEGRASS LENT ($7.70), who was set a comfortable cadence early under Kerron Khelawan (22.92, 46.85) then responded with a gritty performance when tackled on the final turn, staying strong to win in 1:16.92 for trainer Patty Leaney. Lois Bennett's SNAP TO IT was stuck in behind a slow pace with Amadeo Perez at the controls and they angled out three-wide at the far turn and looked to be a danger. However, the fractions were too kind and he could only get second money as the heavy favourite for trainer Barbara Heads. Pauline Felicella's EVANDERKEEN was up in class and gave a top-notch effort chasing the pace ending up a close third for Terry Jordan.
Race 6.
The sixth race saw Lois Bennett's CAMPTOWN LADY ($12.70) lead the field throughout under Antonio Reyes. He was able to grab the lead (22.85, 46.61) easily and opened up an insurmountable margin on the stretch turn, cruising to nice score in 1:17.31 for trainer Barbara Heads. Canmor Farms, Maureen Goss and Adrian Trombley’s NU BLEND was content to sit in the two path under Amadeo Perez, a length off the pacesetter but, when asked, she couldn’t get near the winner and easily held second for Mark Cloutier. Frank Barroby’s NOZOMI was able to close nicely using the rail as an aide to be a good third.
