Four of the day’s six race winners were bred here in B.C.
Warm in the sunshine and cool in the lengthening, late-summer shadows, racegoers were treated to a glorious afternoon in one of the international horse racing’s most magnificent settings. The track, still recovering from the previous day’s rain, was ‘good’ all afternoon.
Race 1.
The Sunday opener at Hastings Racecourse went to Vintage LGA and Mark Freeman’s MISS ACCELERATE ($6.50) who ground out a game victory, chasing the pace under Amadeo Perez and outlasted his chief pace rivals to win in 1:18.00 for trainer Mark Freeman. Tod Mountain Thoroughbreds’ FOOTHILLS BLVD. showed good speed with Antonio Reyes in the irons (22.58, 46.19) and appeared to be on her way to success but lugged into the inner rail, losing valuable momentum in midstretch, causing her to finish in the runner-up spot for trainer Edgar Mendoza. Demetris Topouzis B C CHRISTIE was in a good spot behind the speed and closed up smartly on the stretch turn and checked in a close third under Brian Boodramsingh for trainer Demetris Topouzis.
Claims:
FOOTHILLS BLVD. was claimed by owners Stewart Spencer & Randy Klaassen for trainer Keith Pedersen
Race 2.
The second the afternoon was won by Willow Creek Farms’ NINE OCLOCK CEASAR ($5.50), who had an easy go of it on the head-end, cruising in the clear (22.65, 46.60) as Antonio Reyes took lead to the stretch and had to battle for the win, but got the nod in a tight photo in 1:17.31 for trainer Steve Henson. KD Rycroft Racing, Dennis Dale, Paul Cashman, David and Jesse Morgan's WANDALITA turned in a big performance, chasing three-wide off of a slow pace under Kimal Santo and did well to get into a photo, ending up second for trainer Nicole Rycroft. Devon O'Donnell and Gary Johnson's QUALITY COMMAND was rated in behind the speed by apprentice Taylor Jeszenszky and they closed up strongly late to get the third spot for trainer Frank Barroby.
Race 3.
The third race saw Warren Wilson, June Sutherland, Neil Stajkowski, Ross Switzer and Barry Hickman's BRIAN'S DE LEIGHT ($11.80) get a perfect ride by Ridge Balgobin, settling behind the pace after breaking on top, then pounced on the leaders on the final bend and drew off to an impressive victory in 1:45.07 for trainer Charlene Miller. John Snow’s CHICKASAW was far back early on the inside under Brian Boodramsingh before putting in a big run in last quarter-mile to finish a fast-closing second for conditioner John Snow. Tod Mountain Thoroughbreds and James Redekop's FRASER LANDING set a contested pace (24.51, 48.12, 1:12.87) with Antonio Reyes up and ran very well in his first distance test of the season, ending third for trainer Edgar Mendoza.
Race 4.
The fourth race went to Trinity West Stables’ I'M ALL SHOOK UP ($48.80), who surprised many when she settled close to a sensible pace under Bebeto Harvey, then simply out-gamed them all to win in a blanket finish in 1:18.93 for trainer John Snow. James Redekop and Stefan Ferrario's BLUEBIRD CAFE set all the fractions (22.93, 46.77) under Kimal Santo, but couldn’t stay with the winner for conditioner Terry Jordan and had to settle for the runner-up spot. Rob and Sheena Maybin's FLYING MISS came flying late under Chris Mamdeen to be third for trainer Rob Maybin.
Claims:
BLUEBIRD CAFE was claimed by owners Stewart Spencer and Sean Ederer for trainer Keith Pedersen
Race 5.
The fifth race was won by Canyon Farm’s VECTOR ($5.30) who never gave them a chance, leading throughout (23.70, 47.81, 1:13.02) under Kimal Santo and stayed strong to the wire, winning in 1:45.24 for trainer Craig MacPherson. David and Jesse Morgan's CURLIN ROCKS turned in a sparkling effort with Antonio Reyes aboard, rallying from midpack while wide to be a clear second for trainer Nicole Rycroft. B and B Racing, Vintage LGA, Mark Freeman and Mark Cloutier's DEAL EM was content to trail early and put in a nice run in the closing stages to be third for trainer Mark Cloutier.
Race 6.
The sixth of the day saw Rob and Sheena Maybin's AVE'S IN COMMAND ($5.30) break alertly, secure the rail and the lead (22.32, 45.86) under Chris Mamdeen and the pair did not relinquish the margin, winning easily in 1:17.04 for trainer Rob Maybin. Canyon Farm's BACK SHACK was comfortable sitting a length off of the leader in the second spot under Antonio Reyes and they pretty much stayed there the entire trip, finishing second for conditioner Craig MacPherson. Michelle Roberts-Henson and Mark McGinnis’ RACING RIVER was positioned behind the tepid pace and did not make any ground late but did manage to hold third money for trainer Rob Henson.
Claims:
BACK SHACK was claimed by owner J G Williamson Racing for Trainer Steve Henson
