Saturday's Previews
With the end of the season in sight, Hastings hosts seven ultra-competitive contests this Saturday, including the Tommy Wolski Memorial, run in tribute to a local racing legend
HARLAN’S ANGEL put in arguably her season-best performance to win last time and, significantly, has leading rider Amadeo Perez in the saddle today. Ultra-consistent MAKIN IT UP has won once and hit the board four times in her previous five starts and should be thereabouts, while TAKE CHARGE GWEN kept on well to finish second last time with a gutsy front-running effort against Pineapple Tidbits.
The winner had already flown by the time ADDENDUM got going on her debut, but it was a promising effort and she should know a lot more about the game this time. MILITARY CROSS ran on well enough in a hot contest last time and may be closer today while BC CHU CHU wasn’t beaten too far in the Sadie Diamond Stakes last month. TAPITS CHOICE has been working well and appeals most of the unraced trio.
VALUE DANCER made short work of his rivals when dropped into the bottom tier last time and, back at the same level, should again be the main danger. SILK STILETTOS has been a little frustrating but has hit the board in each of her previous four races and should again be a factor. There is not much between SILVER ARROW and TEXAS HUMOR on the book and the latter returns to the 8 1/2 furlongs after a disappointing effort last time.
STAY FANTASTIC’s third in last weekend’s BC Premiers Stakes makes him an obvious choice, although it’s worth noting that he hasn’t actually won in more than two years and this is far from a ‘gimme’. FORT LANGLEY has been a revelation this term and a repeat of his win last time (with State Fantastic third) would give him every chance. STEAL HOME’s win over PARKER POINT two starts ago make him a serious contender and he wasn’t too far behind Fort Langley last time.
Consistency at this level is important and APPELLANT, who like several of these returns to action on just a week’s rest, has been solid all season. PADDY D’ORO beat subsequent winner KLONDIKE GENTLEMAN two starts ago and was close-up in defeat to Quagmire last weekend. Expect MUSTACHIO to be closer to the pace today after a rare stalking effort last time.
Lightly-raced CHAMPIOSA beat Drill Baby Drill and subsequent winner Carolina Gent by a head two weeks ago on just his third lifetime run and there may be a litle more to come from him. ROLLIE’S SPIRIT also had Drill Baby Drill behind him when winning narrowly last month, returns to the same level here and is another who may have still be on the up. MONTE has been solid all year and he will undoubtedly make his presence felt here although, like Rollie’s Spirt, tends to enjoy being on the front end. ATOMIC HAZE was running on well last time just behind Monte and may benefit from any ill-advised speed duel.
HOLLYWOOD MISTRESS beat Pretty Aria over this distance back in June and the Hastings Racing Club runner lines-up here on the back of a 3-length win earlier this month. She’s consistent and is a major threat. JERSEY LILLIE has some speed and, if she can settle, is also a big danger based on pretty much any of her previous five runs, including a nose win over Jacobs Call two starts ago. BELLAROO has won three times this term and hit the board in all 8 races. She’s impossible to leave out.
