Summer seemed a distant memory at Hastings on Saturday as wet autumn weather blew in to douse racegoers with showers throughout the afternoon. The track was sealed and remained good through all seven races.
Race 1.
The first on Saturday saw Russ and Lois Bennett's homebred filly FREESTYLE ($13.30) take advantage of a blistering pace under Amadeo Perez, who nestled in behind the speed until the far turn, before creeping closer, leading into the stretch and drawing off to a good score in 1:16.92 for conditioner Barbara Heads. Mort Hall and Praven Sorensen's DREAMB was taken back off a crazy pace (21.41 and 44.21) and rallied late with Antonio Reyes to be second. Bulldog Bros Racing and Paul Lesmaurier's NO PEOPLE was also far back off the pace and put in a solid run to be third.
Race 2.
The second race on the program went to Dennis Spence’s JOCK TALK ($9.40), who was held in reserve behind a very slow pace under Kimal Santo before going to work on the final turn. They blew by late to reel in the leaders for the victory in 1:45.84 for hot trainer Cindy Krasner. Helen Klimes, Jo-Anne McDonald and Sharon Pring's THERE GOES MY HERO set a pedestrian pace under Amadeo Perez (24.94, 50.10 and 1:14.61) but stayed game through the lane, ending up in the runner-up spot. Rob and Sheena Maybin's DONE THAT ran a huge race at long odds, taking advantage of an opening on the inside by rider Chris Mamdeen, and she just missed being second.
Race 3.
The third of the day was won by Tod Mountain Thoroughbreds and James Redekop's BAKBURNER who was hesitant to load but left the gate like a rocket with Kimal Santo up and never gave them a chance, cruising to a big win in 39.57 for trainer Edgar Mendoza . Stan Sharma's SHOCK THE HOUSE closed up nicely to be second, signalling he will be a force when he goes a little farther for trainer Brian O'Connell. Wil-a-Way Farms, Gail Jewsbury and Pat Jarvis’ SAILINGFORTHESTARS showed excellent gate speed and led the field to the lane and held on to be third.
Race 4.
The fourth of the day went to Tod Mountain Thoroughbreds and James Redekop's BECKETT’S BEST ($5.80) who, sent immediately to the front by Kimal Santo, made no mistake - capitalizing on his inside draw, setting a slow early cadence (23.71, 47.45) and with plenty left to win in 1:12.76 for trainer Edgar Mendoza. Helen Klimes’ SHE’S KIND OF HOT looked good in her debut as she tracked the speed, was checked on a couple of different occasions and did well to re-rally to end up a clear second. Tod Mountain Thoroughbreds’ OUR BLOKE was content to relax early before closing up smartly through the final quarter-mile to get third money.
Race 5.
The fifth race on the card saw Rob and Sheena Maybin's JERSEY LILLIE ($7.40) claim victory in deep stretch under a perfect ride by Chris Mamdeen. The chestnut mare was away well and sat just in behind a slow early tempo, then shifted to the three path entering the stretch and proved best in 1:17.52 for trainer Rob Maybin. Don Musgrove's PINEAPPLE TIDBITS was not aided by the slow pace and she did to rally late to get the runner-up spot under Silvino Morales for trainer Keith Pedersen. Don Danard and Mel Snow's ROSE OF TEXAS and Jim and Anne Alendal’s HARLAN'S ANGEL both raced up on the pace (22.79, 46.05) and ended up in a dead-heat for third.
Race 6.
The sixth race went to Robin Sadler, John and Kim Morrison's BOLD ARCH ($6.40), who led virtually from start to finish, setting sensible fractions of 23.91, 47.62 and 1:11.40 under regular pilot Silvino Morales. The pair took he lead into the stretch and just lasted by a nose in 1:42.67 for trainer John Morrison. Don Tetaranko’s JUST JIMMY broke sharply and took the early lead before quickly yielding to the winner, tracked his rival the entire trip and just missed under Fraser Aebly. Century Plaza Stables’ STORMY BLUE was tucked in behind the leaders and pretty much stayed in that spot the entire trip, checking-in third.
Race 7.
The last on the Saturday program was won by Dreamtime Stable’s AMANDA ($6.10), who was prominent early under Antonio Reyes, dropped back a bit through the middle stages of the race, then came on in the stretch for the victory in 1:45.96 for trainer Greg Beneen. Bulldog Bros Racing and Paul Lesmaurier's ANIMA raced up on a quick pace (23.54, 47.75 and 1:12.55) under Ridge Balgobin, winning the pace battle but couldn’t hold off the winner and ended up a game runner-up. Richard Hunter’s MISS THE HYPE was shuffled back in a couple of different spots, which hurt her chances, and she did well to bounce back and claim the third spot.
Claims:
MISS THE HYPE was claimed by owners Rob and Sheena Maybin for trainer Rob Maybin
