A healthy-sized crowd of midsummer racing revellers enjoyed another fine and balmy evening under the Hastings’ lights. The track was in fast condition all evening with four of the six races going to horses on, or near, the front end throughout.
Race 1.
The first race on the Friday night program saw WYN Racing Stables’ DRILL BABY DRILL ($4.50) find her way to a very easy lead (24.16, 49.29) under Kimal Santo and the daughter of Texas Wildcatter never gave them a chance as she opened to win by a big margin in 1:18.95 for trainer Larry Grieve. B C CHRISTIE was off a step slow, which left her in a tough spot under Chris Mamdeen, three-wide behind a slow pace for owner/trainer Demetris Topouzis, but she managed to rally on the final bend and just lasted for second. Maureen Byrne's STRIKING VALUE had no early speed with Bebeto Harvey up, but they put in a solid late run and just missed second for trainer Frank Barroby.
Race 2.
The second of the night went to Pat Jarvis, Dan Lee, Nigel Reid and Roberta Staley's WIRLY GIRLY ($3.70), who was relaxed beautifully by Bebeto Harvey on a comfortable pace, then driven clear late to win well in 1:17.47 for trainer Pat Jarvis. Stewart Spencer's LICORICE was sharp from the gate under Antonio Reyes, setting sensible splits of 23.04 and 47.24, and she fought valiantly to the wire but could not stay with the sharp winner and finished a good second for trainer Keith Pedersen. Nite and Day Stable, Joanne Todd and Steve and Diane Comparelli's LOLA M was hemmed down on the inside behind the slow pace under Amadeo Perez, shook loose too late and was only able to rescue third money for conditioner Brian O'Connell.
Race 3.
The third race was won by JG Williamson Racing's TIME TICKER ($6.80) who sat behind a contested duel under Antonio Reyes, content to watch four horses battle for position, then easily ran by when it counted in the stretch to win in 1:45.46 for trainer Steve Henson. Stuart Carmichael and Bill Randall's CURLIN ROCKS was in between horses early and didn’t seem comfortable so Amadeo Perez chose to settle back on the inside behind the speed then, when finally clear inside the eighth-pole, he came running to nail down the runner-up spot for trainer Mark Cloutier. Warren Wilson, June Sutherland, Neil Stajkowski, Barry Hickman and Lesley Small's WISELY PLAYED added blinkers and was sent along for the lead by Kimal Santo in the three-path but eventually attained one of the rail positions and led the field to the stretch but was reeled-in late to fiinish a good third for trainer Charlene Miller.
Claims:
CURLIN ROCKS was claimed by owners Jesse & David Morgan for trainer Nicole Rycroft
Race 4.
The fourth race saw Forster Stable and Blue Willow Dairy’s FOREVER SUMMER ($4.90) take home the top prize as she relaxed nicely on a tepid pace under Antonio Reyes, then proved too much to handle on the class drop, winning in impressive style in 1:19.75 for trainer Dave Forster. Trinity West Stables and Willow Lake Farms and Stables STILETTOS ONLY was held-up behind a slow pace by Bebeto Harvey and, when summoned at the far turn, produced a sharp late move to easily claim second for trainer John Snow. Laura Bacon's NUMAANY'S CANDY turned in a much improved race second-time out under Kimal Santo as she closed up to be third for trainer Nicole Rycroft.
Race 5.
The fifth of the evening went to Ironside Stables DREAMING D'ORO ($12.30), who was held back behind the speed by Brian Boodramsingh before sprinting home to get up late and snatch the victory in her first run after the claim in 1:17.88 for new trainer, Rob VanOverschot. Roy and Dixie Jacobson’s ANNIKA'S SONG was very good in her second career start, as she showed far better speed chasing fractions of 22.42 and 46.42 under Antonio Reyes, and they remained resilient to the finish, just missing the win and ending up second for trainer Mark Cloutier. Canmor Farms, Maureen Goss and Adrian Trombley’s NU BLEND came flying late after a slow beginning to get the third spot for trainer Mark Cloutier.
Race 6.
The sixth race was won by Saundra Chipman's STANFORD NORTH ($3.70), who shot off to the lead under Amadeo Perez 22.68 and 46.45 and had enough in reserve to get the win in 1:18.14 for trainer Giovani Olalde. The second place was a dead-heat between Rob and Sheena Maybin's RICK'S DANCER, with Chris Mamdeen in the saddle, and Sharlea Stable's BARBERRY BANDIT for trainer Frank Barroby and rider Antonio Reyes.
Claims:
STANFORD NORTH was claimed by owner Mike D’Addabbo for trainer Robert Henson
