The Sunday Hastings Racecourse program was held under mostly cloudy skies, but the racing gods helped us as the rain held off and we were afforded a fast racing strip.
Race 1.
The first of the day went to Don Tetarenko’s SILK STILETTOS ($7.00) who broke well from her inside gate and was pestered by C R SUNRISE through early fractions of 22.58 and 46.56 then started to inch away from her pace rival on he final bend and drew off through the lane to win comfortably in a sharp 1:18.55. The D & E Racing Stables ONE FLEET PRINCESS was relaxed in fourth positon early and got running late to claim the second prize. Charlene Miller and Richard Hamel's C R SUNRISE showed her good early speed and raced gamely to the stretch but couldn’t quite match strides with the top two.
Race 2.
The second race was hurt by two late defections leaving only three starters and taking full advantage was George Gilbert's BELCARRA PARK ($2.10) who centered through easy early splits of 23.36 and 47.44 and he easily sped away to win eased up in 1:17.65. She definitely looks headed for stakes company and date with the sensational filly U DID IT. Roy and Dixie Jacobson’s COUNTRY COWBOY just held second in a tight photo over Kent Bird and Dino Condilenios’ BETTER TONE.
Race 3.
The third of the afternoon went to the G.O. Stable’s BETTIN' MAN ($10.60) who fended off all challenges to win his first start after the claim for trainer Erick Gutierrez. He dropped the claim for $4,000 two weeks ago and was paid immediate dividends today setting slow (22.86, 47.20) but contested fractions under Gabriel Morales and showed great courage in winning in 1:19.86. Mike Anderson and Terry Clyde's NORTHERN KID settled just in behind the speed and seemed to be travelling well when he tried for an opening on the inside at the three-eighths pole but had to steady then re-rallied on the turn and looked to be winner but hung a bit late and finished second. Rob and Sheena Maybin's JACK DON'T DRINK charged past the rest to gain third money to complete a 3-2-1 Triactor that paid $39.60.
Race 4.
The fourth event went to the Ironside Stables PARKER POINT who sat back and watched a furious pace duel up front that featured BAKLANE, FINDING WAYS and BABY GRAND carving out scorching fractions of 21.81 and a half-mile in 45.28 he then caught those tiring pace setters and drew off to nice win in 1:17.71 for rider Alex Marti and trainer Rob VanOverschot. Brian Albertson and Francis Tucker's STEAL HOME made a sharp wide rally in the final quarter mile to get the runner-up spot under Amadeo Perez for trainer Cindy Krasner. Warren Wilson, Neil Stajkowski, June Sutherland, Ross Switzer and Barry Hickman's PAY MY WAY also appreciated the fast and contested early tempo and ran on late to get the third spot for conditioner Charlene Miller.
Race 5.
The fifth was captured by Don Musgrove and Lyle Johnson's PINEAPPLE TIDBITS ($6.40) who rallied from last to first to win by the narrowest of margins under Antonio Reyes for trainer Keith Pedersen. The pace scenario was contested (22.55, 46.57) which softened the leaders up for the powerful late move of PINEAPPLE TIDBITS who hit the line first in 1:18.81. The Hastings Racing Club's RACINO had a wide trip early after letting the speed go and she settled three wide down the backside and then started her run as she shifted down to the inside turning for home and battled gamely to the wire and just missed in a photo. Roger and Mel Snow's HEART OF TEXAS put the speed away with a quick backstretch move and led to the head of the lane but got reeled in late and ended up a close third.
Race 6.
The sixth of the day after a lengthy inquiry went to Larry Potozny, Maria Godart, George and Donna Gilbert's RUN LOLA RUN ($11.40) who ran a much improved race settling back off the early pace made a strong four deep run on he turn and just missed at the wire by a nose in a days best 1:17.02 but ended up inheriting the victory as a result of the disqualification of WE B THREE giving the win to rider Antonio Reyes and trainer Barbara Heads. The Tod Mountain Thoroughbreds KICK UP THE DUST was up near the early pace and stayed on well into the stretch before being impeded at the sixteenth pole causing him to finish third and subsequently moved up to second. The Willow Creek Farm’s WE B THREE ran huge race today dueling on a quick pace (22.24, 45.55) and led into the lane and fended off the oncharging RUN LOLA RUN but the win was taken away after the judges deemed that she caused interference to KICK UP THE DUST in midstretch.
Race 7.
The seventh went to Roy and Dixie Jacobson’s OMBRE' ROSE ($27.20) outbroke the field which allowed her to set a comfortable pace 22.81 and 46.73 and she made no mistakes getting to the wire first under Learie Seecharan winning by a nose in 1:18.87 for trainer Mark Cloutier. George Gilbert's TAKE CHARGE GWEN was a little slow spotting the field a couple of lengths and then started a four wide run on the final turn and just missed at the wire ending up an unlucky second. Suzanne Anderson's GEM OF INCEPTION was away in good order and got into a perfect spot laying second behind the comfy pace and she ran on well and just missed ending close third.
