Hastings Raiders on Maneuvers
Trainers Barb Heads and Rob VanOverschot both send talented raiders across the Rockies to Century Mile this weekend.
Heads saddles RUN LOLA RUN (Tapizar) and SANGRIA (Sungold) in the $50k Shirley Vargo Handicap on Friday evening, while VanOverschot is represented by last month’s George Royal winner UNCHARACTERISTIC (Texas Wildcatter) in the $50k Spangled Jimmy Handicap on Saturday. Both races are over seven furlongs.
Run Lola Run is on a hat-trick for the season following two Allowance wins while Sangria, who is returning to the site of her Century Casino Oaks victory, will look to go two places better than her third-place finish in last year’s running of the Shirley Vargo.
Famously, of course, UNCHARACTERISTIC’s last visit to Edmonton saw him land the G3 Canadian Derby. VanOvershot also saddles the BC-bred ITSMYDAY (New Year’s Day) in Saturday’s final race, a Maiden Special Weight contest over six furlongs.
Fellow Hastings handler Rob Gilker, meanwhile, takes his Emerald Downs MSW winner NINE ONE ONE (Maclean’s Music) back to Seattle for a $25k Allowance contest on Saturday.
