An oppressively warm and humid August night gave a tropical feel to proceedings at Hastings on Friday. The track was fast and fair all evening
Race 1.
The first on a very warm Friday evening went to Swift Thoroughbreds HORATIO ($3.30) in decisive fashion as he sat wide on a slow pace (23.58, 48.21) under Silvino Morales, then blew the doors off the field in the final stages, winning in an impressive 1:17.89 for trainer Dino Condilenios. Larry and Margaret Getson and Rocking Bar B Outfit’s MAX BOOSTER was bothered early, costing him position, but Amadeo Perez was able to regather him and put in a solid late run to secure the runner-up spot for Hall-of-Fame trainer Frank Barroby. Triple 8 Racing's ANDALEIGH was also bounced around through the early stages but was given a good ride to get into a nice spot and ran-on wide to get the third spot under Bebeto Harvey for trainer John Snow.
Race 2.
The second was won by Don Musgrove's PINEAPPLE TIDBITS ($6.00), who settled into a perfect spot behind a quick tempo under Silvino Morales before inching closer at the far turn and holding enough in reserve to hang on for the victory for trainer Keith Pedersen. Rob and Sheena Maybin's OSTRACIZE was definitely best but made a mess of the start, leaving her with too much to do, and she just fell short, running second under Ridge Balgobin for trainer Rob Maybin. Rob and Sheena Maybin's VALERIE VALESKI was on a mission from the start as she and Chris Mamdeen ran unchallenged through ambitious splits of 23.85, 46.66, 1:11.36 then, as expected, she tired but still managed to hold third for Rob Maybin.
Race 3.
The third race saw Tod Mountain Thoroughbreds’ STAY FANTASTIC ($4.50) get a dream run under Amadeo Perez, tracking a slow pace then pouncing late for a hard fought win in 1:45.17 for trainer Edgar Mendoza. Rob and Sheena Maybin's BAK TO LIBERTY was off a step slow then rushed up to get the lead, setting a comfortable tempo (24.32, 48.47, 1:13.57) under Ridge Balgobin. They stayed game until the sixteenth pole but yielded late, finishing a very good second for trainer Rob Maybin. Rob and Sheena Maybin's LOGICAL AL was slow early and rallied strongly up the inside late under Chris Mamdeen to be third for Rob Maybin.
Race 4.
The fourth race on the program went to Estate of Russ Bennett and Lois Bennett's SNAP TO IT ($11.20), who was compromised on the first turn when he was bumped hard. Rider Amadeo Perez was forced to take back to last position, then started to cruise up the inside, switched to the four-path on the stretch-turn and ground out a nice win in 1:17.97 for conditioner Barbara Heads. Rob and Sheena Maybin's RHUMBABA was three wide on the pace the entire trip under Ridge Balgobin and just missed, ending up an unlucky second-place finisher for Rob Maybin. Joe and Gloria Russo's BLUEGRASS LENT was sharp early in his debut under Kerron Khelawan, setting sensible splits of 22.63 and 46.38, before staying-on strongly to the wire and just getting caught late in an encouraging third for trainer Patty Leaney.
Race 5.
The fifth race was won by Jordan Froelich and Ryan Deyotte's RICHARDS COMMAND ($11.00) who was cleverly handled by Learie Seecharan, relaxing comfortably behind an easy pace (24.64, 49.72, 1:14.35) then sprinting home best and running-on to win nicely in 1:46.15 for trainer Nicole Rycroft. Bob Leffler, Bryan Killins and Gord McCormick’s ANOTHERSUNNYDAY was well held behind the slow tempo by Silvino Morales and she turned in a good late run in her first ever try at a mile and a sixteenth to be second for trainer Dino Condilenios. WYN Racing Stables’ ICE BREAKER was in between runners throughout much of the trip under Kimal Santo but couldn’t quicken with the winner and ended up a close third for trainer Larry Grieve.
Race 6.
The sixth race saw Conrad Rozenek's MARYS TAPPIN SHOES ($8.40) go gate-to-wire under Brian Boodramsingh, getting glacial-like fractions of 25.78, 51.72, 1:16.90 as she catapulted clear late to win easily in 1:47.16 for trainer Mel Snow. Peter Redekop's MERRY BLUE was content to sit in second early with Amadeo Perez at the controls and they couldn’t stay with the winner but held the second spot for trainer Barbara Heads. White Hall Farms PETERSON LANDING was down the inside and eager behind the very slow pace under Kimal Santo and just missed second ending up third for trainer Keith Pedersen.
Race 7.
The seventh race of the evening was won by Lorie Henson, Helen Klimes and Sharon Pring's QUAGMIRE ($7.70) who raced wide throughout much of the journey under Amadeo Perez but it didn't deter him as he stayed strong to the finish to win in 1:17.59 for trainer Steve Henson. Rob and Sheena Maybin's EYE BE SEEING YOU rallied from well back under Chris Mamdeen to get the runner-up spot. Hammer Racing Stables FOOT SOLDIER snuck through on the inside to claim third in a huge effort for his start of the season for conditioner Rob Henson.
