Plenty of racegoers enjoyed another perfect day in the Hastings’ neighbourhood on Saturday, with a gentle breeze on hand to cool the firecensess of the July sunshine. The track remained fast and and fair all afternoon with five of the seven winners coming from gates four and five
Race 1.
The first race on Saturday went to Dreamtime Stable’s BECKETT'S BEST ($9.70) who was given a textbook ride by Kimal Santo, settling in behind a quick pace while saving ground, then angling out three-wide at the top of the stretch to engage the leaders and earn a hard-fought victory in 1:17.88 for trainer Greg Beneen. Tod Mountain Thoroughbreds’ OUR BLOKE set a lively pace with Antonio Reyes aboard (21.82, 45.41) and stayed very game in the final stages for trainer Edgar Mendoza, only to lose in the shadows of the wireand ending up an excellent runner-up. Tod Mountain Thoroughbreds and James Redekop's FRASER LANDING looked to be a threat as he challenged stablemate OUR BLOKE from the three-eighths pole to the finish, but got a little weary late and finished a close third for conditioner Edgar Mendoza.
Race 2.
The second of the day was won by Canyon Farm's MR MORRIS ($5.50), who was able to clear from his outside draw and get the lead under Kerron Khelawan through sensible fractions (22.13, 45.78), before staying on strongly to the wire to win in 1:17.27 for trainer Craig MacPherson. B & B Racing, Vintage LGA, Mark Freeman and Mark Cloutier's DEAL EM turned in a big effort, making a big four-wide rush down the backside with Amadeo Perez at the controls, as the pair battled for the lead on the stretch turn but could not quite stay with the winner, ending up a much improved second for trainer Mark Cloutier. Randy Lane and Roy Nelson's RUN RUDOLF came off of a two-month rest with a big performance under Silvino Morales to be a fast-closing third for trainer, Keith Pedersen.
Race 3.
The third race was for two-year-olds going three-and-a-half furlongs and, making no mistakes, was Double K Thoroughbred Stable's PIONEER STORM KING ($7.60), who broke beautifully from his inside draw under Kimal Santo, held the rail and drew off late for an impressive score in 40.00 for trainer Rob Henson. G.O. Stable’s ANOTHER LAST DANCE was also sharp from the start under Amadeo Perez and battled determinedly, but had to settle for second for trainer Erick Gutierrez. Wil-a-Way Farms, Gail Jewsbury and Pat Jarvis’ ANSTHRUTHER was not as fast as the top two with Bebeto Harvey in the saddle but they ran-on well to be third for conditioner Pat Jarvis.
Race 4.
The fourth race on the Saturday card saw Canyon Farm's PURSUE ($3.90) rally from last to first under Amadeo Perez to win in 1:44.22. The homebred son of Bakken was in no hurry early and, when asked, sprinted home on the far outside for an exciting victory for trainer Craig MacPherson. Warren Wilson, Neil Stajkowski, June Sutherland, Ross Switzer and Barry Hickman's PAY MY WAY was another that was held in reserve through the opening stages by Kimal Santo, then produced a solid final quarter-mile move, finishing a good second for trainer Charlene Miller. Willow Creek Farms and Fabio Chiesa’s NEIGHBOR was caught-up close to a quick pace (23.58, 47.38, 1:12.60) with Antonio Reyes aboard and, although they held the lead heading for home, got a little tired late and checked in a close third for trainer Steve Henson.
Race 5 — The Todd Rogers Memorial
The fifth race of the afternoon went to Peter Redekop's APPREHEND ($4.00), who sat a perfect trip off of a very slow pace under Amadeo Perez then, when the sprint for home began, quickened best to win comfortably in 1:44.40 for trainer Barbara Heads. Don Tetarenko’s JUST JIMMY, who set a very casual pace under Kerron Khelawan (25.25, 49.59, 1:14.04), couldn’t sprint with the winner but was well-clear in second for trainer Craig MacPherson. Cathy and Kelly Rycroft, Dennis Dale and Dynamic Stables’ BIG UNION made a mess of the start under Bebeto Harvey, which left him without valuable position behind the turtle-like tempo, and they could only rescue third money.
Race 6.
The sixth race went to Rob and Sheena Maybin's AVE’S IN COMMAND ($6.50), who set a comfortable cadence early under Chris Mamdeen (22.90, 46.21) and had lots left to hold them all at bay and hit the line in a swift 1:16.96 for trainer Rob Maybin. Sasquatch Stables KNOPFLER made his usual good run up the inside under Silvino Morales, but the slow fractions hurt his chances of winning today, so second was a good result for trainer Greg Beneen. Michelle Roberts-Henson and Mark McGinnis RACING RIVER was away well and settled in second early, but gave ground down the backside under Ridge Balgobin and ended up settling for the third spot today for trainer Rob Henson.
Claims:
KNOPFLER was claimed by owners Stewart Spencer and Vanessa PedersenTHERE GOES MY HERO was claimed by owner Saundra Chipman for trainer Geovani Olade
Race 7.
The finale saw Lorie Henson and Helen Klimes QUEEN OF ATTITUDE ($2.90) go from last-to-first in the blink of an eye under Amadeo Perez to win with ease in 1:17.33 for trainer Steve Henson. BFA Holdings’ INDYETTA showed good speed but was pressured throughout in a three-way battle with Kimal Santo aboard. She won that battle but couldn’t stay with the winner and had to settle for second. Last Call Racing Stable and Cathy Bornn’s MISS THE HYPE was far back off of the contested pace under Antonio Reyes and rallied late to be third for trainer Brent Bremner.
It Pays to Own a BC Bred!

Prince is Perfect in Grade 2 Seagram Cup
TORONTO, July 27, 2024 – Paramount Prince reigned supreme once again, this time in the $175,000 Seagram Cup (G2), Saturday at Woodbine.
Sent off as the 6-5 choice, Paramount Prince, leaving from the outside post in the eight-horse field, was hustled to the front by Patrick Husbands soon after the gates opened in the 1 1/16-mile main track event for 3-year-olds and up. Stanley House settled into second, followed by Volcanic and County Final.
On top by two lengths over Stanley House through an opening quarter in :24.69, Paramount Prince held the same advantage after a half reached in :48.81.
Heading into the turn for home, Stanley House amped up the pressure to the outside of last year’s King’s Plate winner, but Paramount Prince, under little urging, dashed away from his rivals in early stretch.
In front by five lengths at the stretch call, the 4-year-old son of Society’s Chairman-Platinum Steel cruised to a 5 ½-length triumph in a time of 1:43.37. A game Stanley House battled back to finish second, a head in front of Wicked Django. Palazzi, a stablemate of Paramount Prince, was a further neck back in fourth. Money Supply was scratched.
