Another glorious late summer afternoon at Hastings, with a distinctive whiff of wildfire smoke in the air to remind us that endless sunshine brings its own issues. A large crowd enjoyed the shirtsleeve weather as much as the horses and horsepower on view. The track remained fast and fair all afternoon.
Race 1.
The Saturday opener went to Barry Doud's BUZZINGA KARMA ($6.20) who, after a tardy beginning, rushed up to gain command through splits of 24.74, 47.87 and 1:13.12. Rider Fraser Aebly had enough in reserve to hold his advantage to the wire in 1:45.85 for trainer Carl Lausten. Ironside Stables’ DESIRED OUTCOME was content to trail the field early under Brian Boodramsingh and made a menacing move on the stretch turn to engage the winner, but couldn’t get by, and ended up a clear second for trainer Rob VanOverschot. Triple 8 Racing's ANDALEIGH showed good speed early and stayed on well to hold third money.
Race 2 — The $50,000 Delta Colleen Handicap
The second of the day was the $50,000 Delta Colleen for fillies and mares going a mile and a sixteenth and, winning her 12th consecutive Stakes race, was Bill DeCoursey and RNH Stable’s INFINITE PATIENCE ($2.70) who led from start to finish under Antonio Reyes, setting sensible splits of 24.34, 48.22 and 1:12.91 and, despite the 128 pound import, she easily held for the win in 1:44.81 for conditioner Barbara Heads. Willow Creek Farm's WE B THREE turned in another good performance, doing everything right but had to settle for second money under Amadeo Perez and trainer Steve Henson. Dennis Dale, Tabitha Perry, Sheryle Benson, Cathy and Kelly Rycroft's WANDALITA made a run on the backstretch to get in contention and did well to be third.
Race 3.
The third race was won by John and Kim Morrison's MILITARY CROSS ($12.40) who broke on top and set an easy pace (23.34, 47.22) before powering home to a big score under Kerron Khelawan in 1:18.05 for trainer John Morrison. Rob Scott, William Long and Dan McLeod's HE'S A SAINT was held back behind the speed and shook loose on the final turn and finished a clear runner-up. Mauro Comensoli's STANFORD NORTH removed blinkers today and changed tactics, coming from last, and he rallied late to be third.
Race 4.
The fourth on the program went to D and E Racing's LIZZIES GIRL ($23.70) who kept the trend off wire-to-wire going as she secured a clear lead early (24.26, 47.87 and 1:12.94) and opened up late to win easily in 1:46.12 for trainer Tara Neigel. Gary Johnson, Sharlea and Pumpkin Stable’s ZETAMARIE was in a perfect striking position under Fraser Aebly, loomed up approaching the stretch but couldn’t stay with the winner and ended up a good second. Richard Hunter’s MISS THE HYPE was far back early, rode the rail and was able to get up to be third.
Race 5.
The fifth race of the day went to Willow Creek Farm's SELF SERVING ($4.40), who broke well under Antonio Reyes, showed some speed holding the rail (23.54, 47.83) and was never really threatened as he cruised to an easy victory in 1:18.54 for trainer Steve Henson. Helen Klimes, Jo-Anne McDonald and Sharon Pring's THERE GOES MY HERO was also prominent early under Amadeo Perez ,who gave him every chance to win and he stayed on gamely to be second. Jordan Froelich's KLIMTOGLORY was not done any favours with the slow early tempo and he did well to be third.
Race 6.
The sixth of the day went to Lance Giesbrecht and Gord Christoff’s ERLICH ($15.90), who settled nicely on the inside under Kerron Khelawan through the early stages, then split horses late to win in 1:51.93 for conditioner Robbie Anderson. James Redekop and Stefan Ferrario's BROKE AN BROKEN also sat a comfortable trip just off of the speed (23.44, 47.61 and 1:12.68) then got a dream run up the inside to take the lead, but couldn’t hold off the winner and had to settle for second. Minnaloushe Stables and Dave Milburn's YOU DON'T OWN ME set a contested pace, put away the favoured MAKEITORBREAKIT and stayed on determinedly late to be third.
Race 7 — The $50,000 S.W. Randall Plate
The seventh race was the $50,000 S.W. Randall Plate for three-year-olds and up going nine furlongs and taking home the winner’s cheque was Dennis Dale, Tabitha Perry, Sheryle Benson, Cathy and Kelly Rycroft's BIG UNION ($15.90), who was given a picture perfect ride by Silvino Morales. The duo settled in behind the speed on the rail before seizing an opportunity at the top the stretch and coming through to win by a nose in 1:51.22 for trainer Nicole Rycroft. Bryan and Carol Anderson's AT ATTENTION ran his usual brilliant race and just missed in a narrow defeat, setting fractions of 24.06, 48.57 and 1:13.53 under Antonio Reyes. Warren Wilson, June Sutherland, Neil Stajkowski, Ross Switzer and Barry Hickman's PAY MY WAY turned in his usual workmanlike effort and managed to get up late to be a clear third.
Race 8.
The eighth of the afternoon went to the Hastings Racing Club's RACINO ($14.50) who relaxed nicely off of the speed, saving every inch of ground under Kerron Khelawan and sneaking up the inside at the eighth pole to win in 1:19.23 for trainer Pat Jarvis. Don Danard and Mel Snow's ROSE OF TEXAS set fractions of 23.09 and 46.70, remained on the lead until the stretch and stayed on well to be second. Willow Creek Farm's BAKFIRE BABY was away in good order and settled behind the speed in the three path. She couldn’t stay with the top two but won a tight photo for third.
