Summer ended abruptly at Hastings as the cooler air and grey skies of spring returned. Sporadic rain was only light and the track remained fast throughout.
Race 1.
The Sunday opener was virtually a match race from the gate to wire between AYELLOWROSEOFTEXAS and KLOEPATRA and getting to the line first was the WYN Racing Stables KLOEPATRA ($12.90) who got the better of her rival in the final eighth of a mile under Scott Williams for trainer Larry Grieve in a good 1:17.79. Peter Redekop's AYELLOWROSEOFTEXAS stumbled at the start but quickly regathered herself to get the lead and the two fillies raced in unison through sensible splits of 22.94 and 46.85 but she started to give up ground late and finished a solid second well clear of the third horse who Rob and Sheena Maybin's MISS THE HYPE who had no pace to run at and checked in third.
Race 2.
The second of the day went to the Ironside Stables PRETTY ARIA ($3.70) who was afforded an uncontested and slow early tempo as she dawdled through 23.91 and 47.69 and easily drew away for a dominating score in 1:18.09 under Amadeo Perez for trainer Rob VanOverschot. The Side Pot Stables WALKINTHEWALK ran another big one and was flying in the lane but due to the pedestrian pace she could only snare second money. The Willow Creek Farms IRISH LUNA was away well and was allowed to settle in behind the leaders and scooted up the inside to grab the third spot.
Claims:
WALKINTHEWALK was claimed by Rob & Sheena Maybin and trainer Rob Maybin
Race 3.
The third on the card went once again to the owner-trainer combo of the Ironside Stables and Rob VanOverschot as their RING OF KERRY ($11.20) was beautifully ridden by Kerron Khelawan settling on the rail behind the speed and split horses when asked at the eighth pole and went on to victory in 1:17.71. The Willow Creek Farms TIZ MEOW ran another good one but suffered from a wide trip and could only manage to get the runner-up spot. Harold and Sandra Barroby's IT'S IN COMMAND ran a big one as well setting the early pace of 22.73 and 46.35 and led the field to lane and held on well to be third.
Claims:
APPELLANT was claimed by Helen Jewel and trainer Ian Jewel
Race 4 - The Julie Wicks Memorial Race
The fourth was the Julie Wicks Memorial and fittingly her horse KHAIKY’S COMMAND ($5.30) got the job done in wire-to-wire fashion under Learie Seecharan in 1:17.37 for trainer Kevin Scott. The win was a popular one as all of the companion ponies and their pilots, who were clad in “Julie Wicks pink" to celebrate the win of a backstretch favourite who lost her battle with cancer last week. The Minnaloushe Stables and Dave Milburn's YOU DON'T OWN ME turned in an excellent effort rallying late to get second money ahead of the L and S Farms and High Stakes Thoroughbreds REPRIMAND who tracked the speed and just got caught late for second and ran third.
Claims:
KHAIKY’S COMMAND was claimed by Joe and Gloria Russo and trainer Jaymie Pearman.
Race 5 — The Supernaturel Stakes
The fifth of the day wax the first stakes even which was the $50,000 Supernaturel going a mile and a sixteenth and after an adventurous trip John Anderson’s U DID IT got up in deep stretch to secure the win. The favoured U DID IT ($4.20) elected to take back early and settle but she had other ideas and was tough to handle through the first half-mile then was given a break when the saddle slipped on SILK STILETTOS, allowing Antonio Reyes to have dead aim on the speed and she outran BELCARRA PARK to the wire for trainer Edgar Mendoza in a good 1:45.76. George Gilbert's BELCARRA PARK ran a much improved race without the blinkers and settled nicely on a comfortable pace (23.98, 47.53 and 1:12.76) then jumped the dirt tracks on the backside where the starting gate sits losing her action and Amadeo Perez quickly slapped her on the shoulder to get her back in stride but the mishap had cost her the one length break that she had and couldn’t stay with the winner through the closing stages and ran a good second. The Sapphire Stables SHAMRA settled a little closer today and closed up in the stretch just missing second and wound up third.
Race 6 — The Chris Loseth Handicap Stakes
The sixth was the $50,000 Chris Loseth stakes which was taken by Kim Peacock and Lance Giesbrecht's REGAL RIOT ($11.40) giving him two stakes wins in a row. The son of Jersey Town from champion mare Regal Red sat a perfect trip under Efrain Hernandez off of a very slow early cadence then started to inch away heading for home and safely held the advantage to the wire in a good 1:44.56 for veteran conditioner Robbie Anderson and was bred by his wife Suzanne Anderson in Westwold, B.C. which is just east of Kamloops. Gord Christoff’s GUNFIGHTER was at a distinct disadvantage with the shape of the race and showed his class by making the race interesting as he rallied from five lengths back to make it exciting in the lane but had to settle for second for trainer John Snow. Dave and Sylvea Gregory's SOARINGFORTHESUN led the field early through easy splits but couldn’t quite stay with the top two ending up a clear third.
Race 7.
The last of the day was won by the JT Racing and Ryan Deyotte's RICHARDS COMMAND ($12.90) who was let relax by Learie Seecharan far off of the red hot early fractions and was angled four wide to blow past the field for the win in 1:45.97 for trainer Ryan Deyotte. Rob and Vicky Gilker’s MAKIN IT UP turned in a much improved race taking advantage of the crazy pace up front and closed up well to be second. Jim and Anne Alendal’s HARLAN'S ANGEL was on a mission to get the lead and secured it setting fractions of 23.24, 46.86 and 1:12.40 which proved costly but she had enough left to save third.
