Night Strike by Heads
Trainer Barbara Heads certainly owned the first Friday Night racing seen at Hastings in quite some time, saddling a four-timer as Vancouver race fans got the weekend off to a perfect start

Trainer Barbara Heads had four wins on the night.
Antonio Reyes and Brian Boodramsingh had riding doubles.
The handle was a very good $488,861.
A cool breeze relented early, leaving Friday-night revellers to enjoy a warm evening under the lights. The track dried out well following heavy rain earlier in the week and the was fast and fair throughout.
Race 1.
The Friday night opener went to Rob and Sheena Maybin's EYE BE SEEING YOU ($6.80), who was content to trail the field early under Chris Mamdeen, then put in a bold move on the stretch turn to join the leaders and blew by in the final sixteenth to win in the clear for trainer Rob Maybin in 1:17.72. Helen Klimes, Jo-Anne McDonald and Sharon Pring's THERE GOES MY HERO, who was given a perfect trip by Amadeo Perez and briefly struck the lead at the top of the stretch but had to settle for second. Ed Claggett, Foster Armstrong and Craig MacPherson's JUST MISTY got caught up in a speed duel racing through blazing splits of 22.20 and 45.49 couldn’t stay on top but held third money.
Race 2.
The second of the evening was won by Ralph Jesiak's EMPEROROFTHENORTH ($6.40) who rallied from far off the pace under Brian Boodramsingh, sneaking through on the inside on the final bend and angled out in the stretch to get up for the victory for trainer Rob VanOverschot in 1:17.93. Rob Scott, William Long and Dan McLeod's HES A SAINT set a sensible pace of 22.73 and 46.23 took the lead to the stretch and just missed. Barry Doud's BUZZINGA KARMA was off a step slow but quickly got in contention, racing three wide and running on nicely in his debut to be third.
Race 3.
The third of the day as expected went to the 1-5 favourite KAPALUA CANDY ($2.40), who cruised through fractions of 22.04 and 45.38, opened up her lead into the lane and won easily under Amadeo Perez in 1:117.35 for the RNH Stables and trainer Barbara Heads. Trinity West Stables’ I'M ALL SHOOK UP showed good speed in her Hastings debut for trainer John Snow, sitting a comfortable second early, couldn’t stay with the winner but held second. Stuart Carmichael’s VISENYA was last through the early stages and are a good run to get into the third spot.
Race 4.
The fourth went to Russ and Lois Bennett's VIVA LA VINO ($9.50), who broke on top and settled early, then started to creep up around the first turn when the pace slackened, was in a perfect striking position approaching the far turn and turned in a quick final quarter-mile under Antonio Reyes to win in 1:16.70 for trainer Barbara Heads. Tod Mountain Thoroughbreds’ WANDALITA was in a good spot early lost position heading into the backstretch and came on strongly late to be second. George Gilbert's BELCARRA PARK missed the break, then rushed up to get the lead through moderate splits of 22.76 and 46.45, but having to do so much early to get back with the field took its toll and she was a little tired late, ending up third in a much improved effort.
Race 5.
The fifth of the night went to Jerry Billan's TIME TICKER ($6.80), who was rationed early under Fraser Aebly trained the field early then began a sharp run on the inside, angled out turning for home and breezed by the tiring leaders for the win in 1:16.72 for trainer Barbara Heads. George and Donna Gilbert’s COUNTERACT showed good early speed and secured a beautiful spot early under Amadeo Perez started to inch up to the lead in the stretch but couldn’t hold off the winner and ended up a good second. Marty Miller's LOVEABOVEANDBEYOND, was sent up to gain the front end early through fractions of 22.21 and 45.55, led into the lane but she was a little weary late and finished third.
Race 6.
The sixth on the program was won impressively by Roger Snow’s SPACE ($4.40), who travelled strongly throughout and was rated confidently by Brian Boodramsingh in the second spot early, then cruised by the pacesetter and drew off to a big score in a nights best 1:16.65 for trainer Mel Snow. Ironside Stables DESIRED OUTCOME was void of speed and came with a big run to claim the second placing. Mauro Comensoli's STANFORD NORTH set an uncontested pace of 22.52 and 45.76 and was able to hold the third spot.
Race 7.
The Friday night finale saw Praven Sorensen and Mort Hall's ARTISTIC JEWLER ($5.20) dominate her rivals, winning well under Antonio Reyes in 1:44.26 for trainer Barbara Heads. Rob and Sheena Maybin's MISS THE HYPE was shuffled back early drifting back off of the comfortable pace then managed to rally in the stretch to get the runner-up spot. Bulldog Bros Racing and Paul Lesmaurier's ANIMA set a sensible pace of 24.20, 47.91 then was maxed out at six panels in 1:11.82 and she showed good courage to hold the third position.
