Sunday’s Race Reviews by Mike Heads
Race 1.
The first race on the Sunday card saw Rob and Sheena Maybin's JERSEY LILLIE ($2.90) easily best a field of $4,000 fillies and mares. Rider Chris Mamdeen secured the lead comfortably without much pressure (22.92, 46.34) and they proved too much, cruising under the line in 1:17.74 for trainer Rob Maybin. BFA Holdings’ CARLA'S HONOR was flying late despite the slow fractions under Kimal Santo and managed to grab the second place cheque for conditioner Cindy Krasner. G.O. Stables’ TEXAS HUMOR settled a little farther back than usual under apprentice Richard Balgobin, they made good ground approaching the far turn to get near the winner but tired a bit late to be third for trainer Erick Gutierrez.
Race 2.
The second race went to Rob and Sheena Maybin's OSTRACIZE ($10.10) who put in a sharp quarter-mile run to inch by in the stretch and claim victory in 1:45.53 under Ridge Balgobin for trainer Rob Maybin. J G Williamson Racing OVERLY FAST sat a good trip in behind the speed, then breezed by the leaders when asked by Kimal Santo but got caught late, ending up a good second for Steve Henson. Warren Wilson, June Sutherland, Neil Stajkowski, Ross Switzer and Barry Hickman's BRIAN'S DE LEIGHT got involved in a slow but contested pace under Kerron Khelawan, lost the lead nearing the top of the stretch and stayed-on well for third for Charlene Miller.
Race 3.
The third race of the afternoon was won by Canyon Farm's AUTOBAHN ACE ($4.50), who was prominent throughout, chasing sensible splits of 22.46 and 46.13. He was forced very wide in the backside but overcame the lost ground to win smartly in 1:17.40 under Amadeo Perez for trainer Craig MacPherson. Renfrew Racing, Breen Racing, B and B Racing, No Trump Stable and Matt Elder's KYALAM was able to sprint off to the lead and get to the rail under Antonio Reyes. They battled determinedly to the sixteenth pole on the front end but couldn’t stay with the winner and finished a clear second for Mark Freeman. Canyon Farm's KITTEN KANDY was on the rail the entire trip with Kerron Khelawan in the saddle, and they drove through on the inside to briefly take the lead at the far turnbefore ending up a good third for trainer Craig MacPherson.
Race 4.
The fourth race went to Milburn Legacy's PETER FLIES ($34.20), who broke like a rocket, allowing Learie Seecharan to calm the fractions (23.11, 46.85) and settle on an uncontested lead. Then, when the pressure came on the stretch turn he responded with courage and outsprinted his rivals to the finish in 1:17.72 for trainer Peter Milburn. James Redekop and Stefan Ferrario's BROKE AN BROKEN was far behind the slow pace and did well to miss in a tight photo under Amadeo Perez for trainer Terry Jordan. Nicole Droder's LOVE THE NEST was content to sit off the pace under Kerron Khelawan, then crept up the inside but lacked racing room in the final sixteenth and had to settle for third for Craig MacPherson.
Race 5.
The fifth race saw Lois Bennett's VIVA LA DIVA ($3.70) battle on a lively pace (21.90, 44.87) under Amadeo Perez and hey started to inch clear on the final turn and turned back all challenges to get the victory in 1:17.39 for trainer Barbara Heads. Renfrew Racing, B and B Racing, No Trump Stable, Matt Elder and Bill Breen's MATSQUI showed great late interest as she flew late from far back to get the runner-up spot with Kimal Santo at the controls for Mark Freeman. Devon O'Donnell and Gary Johnson's QUALITY COMMAND was nestled in behind the speed early under Richard Balgobin and they made a stern move on the final bend and stayed-on well to be third for Hall-of-Fame conditioner Frank Barroby.
Race 6.
The last of the afternoon went to Rob and Sheena Maybin's AVE'S IN COMMAND ($3.80), who outbroke the field and easily cleared to race freely on a comfortable pace under Chris Mamdeen and, as always when given a clear lead, he proves too tough to catch and he cruised under the line clear in 1:16.74 for trainer Rob Maybin. Milburn Legacy's FOREIGN PROTOCOL ran a huge one, coming from just off the pace and looking to be a danger on the final turn under Learie Seecharan, before being outrun to the wire and ending up an impressive second for Peter Milburn. Saundra Chipman's THERE GOES MY HERO didn’t get the best pace scenario set in front of him, but he still ran by runners quickly in the stretch to be a promising third for trainer Keith Pedersen.
