Spring ended as it began, with another cloudy and humid afternoon. Hastings was spared any major rain and the track remained fast throughout the seven-race card.
Race 1.
The first of the day went to BFA Holdings WISE MARKET ($6.50) who was put in a perfect position tracking his stable companion OMBRE ROSE through sensible fractions of 24.23, 48.18 and 1:13.41 and put that one away at the far turn and was never seriously threatened and cruised under the wire with Amadeo Perez in 1:46.10 for trainer Mark Cloutier. Barbara Heads’ ACE DEUCE broke alertly and wrestled back behind a very slow pace and made w good run on the final turn but could not get to the winner. Rob and Sheena Maybin's MASTER EWEN sat a good trip down on the inside and ran on late to be third.
Race 2.
The second of the afternoon was an exciting event for fillies and mares and just hitting the finish line first was Maria Godart, Larry Potozny and George and Donna Gilbert’s RUN LOLA RUN ($7.40) who sat in behind the speed and popped out entering the stretch and nailed a very stubborn KICK UP THE DUST at the wire for trainer Barbara Heads. The Tod Mountain Thoroughbreds’ KICK UP THE DUST was given a textbook ride by Silvino Morales sitting in second behind a dawdling pace of 22.94 and 46.80 then poked a neck in front turning for home and sprinted for the line but lost the photo by a bob of the nose. The Canyon Farm's FLORAL broke better but chose to sit back off of the pace and made a good run up the inside to get third money.
Race 3.
The third race was for two-year-olds going three-and-a-half-furlongs and the fastest proved to be Don Muldoon, Mark Freeman and Dave Milburn's CALYPSO PRINCESS ($15.60) who catapulted out of her outside gate and easily cleared the field approaching the far turn and drew off stylishly under Scott Williams for trainer Dave Milburn in a quick 39.73. The Swift Thoroughbreds’ REMEMBERTHEALAMO broke on top but veered to the outside losing momentum brushing with a rival and recovered well to be a comfortable second. Mauro Comensoli's MS. STANFORD showed a good turn of foot late to get the third spot.
Race 4.
The fourth went to owner-trainer Jim Strachan’s DEBATABLE ($7.50) who was held in reserve by leading rider Amadeo Perez as the two were content to trail the field early and watch a quick and contested pace develop then when Amadeo asked him for his best nearing the far turn he started to pass horses easily and drew off to a convincing victory in 1:46.25. Jim Smith’s TUXEDO ran a huge race chasing the pace (23.84, 48.58 and 1:13.59) under apprentice Angela Straight won the pace battle but couldn’t off the oncoming DEBATABLE and did very well to hold second. Rob and Sheena Maybin's CAUSIN’ HAVOC settled off the pace early and ran on in the lane to just get the third prize.
Race 5.
The fifth race went to Bryan and Carol Anderson's AMANDA ($3.30) who led throughout setting easy fractions of 25.08, 50.18 and got six panels in 1:15.37 then sprinted to the wire just lasting by the narrowest of margins under Antonio Reyes in 1:47.09 for trainer Barbara Heads. Rob and Sheena Maybin's MISS THE HYPE was tucked in behind the slow pace and finally shook clear turning into the stretch and was flying late but missed by a nose under Silvino Morales. The Tod Mountain Thoroughbreds’ VALUE DANCER was off a heartbeat slow forcing her to be situated in last place early behind the pedestrian pace and she did well to sneak up he inside to gain the third place cheque.
Race 6.
The sixth race was taken down in wire-to-wire fashion by Rob and Sheena Maybin's CERTIFIABLE ($13.30) who led under apprentice Shaquil McIntosh through fractions of 25.23, 50.42 and 1:16.44 and had plenty left in the tank to win easily in 1:47.62 giving the young jockey his first ever riding victory and was extremely excited as they approached the wire and received the customary buckets of water from his colleagues in the jockey’s room. The early fractions did not help his stablemate BELLAROO who was held up in behind the pace and turned a solid final quarter mile run but the leader had things too easy so he had to settle for second. Dave and Sylvea Gregory's SUNGOLD BEAUTY had a tough trip and was out of position due to the slow pace and could only manage to rescue third place.
CLAIMS:
BELLAROO was claimed by Goonshow Stables and trainer Dino Condilenios
PAGODA RIDGE was claimed by Dan Lee, Nigel Reid and owner/trainer Pat Jarvis
Race 7.
The last of the day went to Rob VanOverschot (lessee) and breeder Eileen Lucas’ CHASE THE SUN ($3.30) who crushed his opponents in a smart time of 1:16.93 giving Antonio Reyes his a riding triple on the day. The son of Bakken broke on top and was allowed to gallop alongside MCMURPHY through comfortable fractions of 22.54 and 46.35 then gained command on the final turn without being asked and cruised under the line a very impressive winner with a bright future ahead. The Hastings Racing Club's PRINCE CAIRO ran another huge race but just hooked into a monster today and checked in second. Patty Leaney’s MCMURPHY set the early pace but couldn’t stay with the top two in the stretch and ended up third.
