Racegoers basked in glorious summer sunshine, with a light breeze out of the west to make for a perfect afternoon on the rails. The track was fast.
Race 1.
The first of the day went to Harold and Sandra Barroby's SIR BARCLAY ($9.70) who drew off to a daylight lead early and only had to go splits of 24.08 and 48.25 to secure his big advantage and when called upon at the head of the lane he had plenty left in reserve to win going away in 1:18.59 under Kuri Powell giving him his first ever win at Hastings. Pat Jarvis' MARTELLO had dead aim under Lenny Seecharan on SIR BARCLAY and looked to be a winner on the final turn but he had to settle for the runner-up spot. Rob and Sheena Maybin's TRUPON ONLINE was situated in third spot early and stayed there throughout.
Race 2.
The second of the day went to the Tod Mountain Thoroughbreds WANDALITA ($3.60) who was able to break well and secure the lead through comfortable fractions of 22.61 and 46.33 under Amadeo Perez then easily held off her rivals winning by many with plenty of unused energy in 1:17.10 for trainer Edgar Mendoza. The cameras could not separate Don Danard and Mel Snow's ROSE OF TEXAS and Rob and Sheena Maybin's OSTRACIZE who both hit the finish line together to dead-heat for the second spot.
Race 3.
The third race was won by the Shamrock Racing Stables REMARKABLE GIRL ($17.20) who was patiently ridden by apprentice Ridge Balgobin sitting at the rear of the field early then put in a three wide move and started to inch away in the stretch to get the victory for trainer Brian Phillips in 1:49.20. The Minnaloushe Stables and Dave Milburn's CATTITUDE was pressured a bit of the head end and was forced to go 24.04, 48.64 and six panels in 1:14.75 led them all to the lane but just got a little tired late and ran second. Warren Wilson, June Sutherland, Neil Stajkowski, Ross Switzer and Barry Hickman's HARBOUR STORM was well but taken back off the contested pace then proceeded to creep up on the outside in he three path and ran on well ending up a close third for trainer Charlene Miller.
Race 4.
The fourth of the afternoon was a wire-to-wire win by Rob and Sheena Maybin's FINDING WAYS ($5.70) who was able to get the lead on the rail and was pressured through splits of 22.50 and 45.80 but found a little more than the rest under Silvino Morales and won nicely in 1:17.61. The Canyon Farm's BAKLANE settled in behind the speed and hugged the rail for most of the race then came out for the drive but couldn’t get to the winner and finished second. High Stakes Thoroughbreds and John Snow's JUVEE TOO was allowed to relax well back off of the pace and put in a quick three wide move to get into the third spot at the wire.
Claims: Finding Ways was claimed by owners Goonshow Stables and trainer Dino K. Condilenios
Race 5.
The fifth of the day was easily won by the Tod Mountain Thoroughbreds QUALITY COMMAND ($9.50) who set some easy fractions of 23.60 and 47.69 and was never troubled to the finish under Efrain Hernandez winning in 1:18.27 for trainer Edgar Mendoza. The Tod Mountain Thoroughbreds VALUE DANCER was hurt by the slow pace and did very well to rescue the runner-up spot. Bruce Unwin’s INDYGOGOLD showed a lot of ability while running a little greenly and checked in a solid third.
Claims: Value Dancer was trained by owner Stan Sharma and trainer: Brian O'Connell
Race 6.
The sixth was won by Rob Thacker’s PINEAPPLE TIDBITS ($8.60) who was wrangled back to last early which proved to be a successful strategy as she made a big sweeping move with Learie Seecharan in the saddle on the final turn to win easily for trainer Demetris Topouzis in 1:45.57. Jim and Anne Alendal’s HARLAN'S ANGEL set a sensible early tempo 24.00, 48.54 and 1:13.97 and just couldn’t match strides with PINEAPPLE TIDBITS in the final eighth of a mile but held gamely to be second. Rob and Vicky Gilker's MAKIN IT UP was always in a good striking position under Kimal Santo and ran on to be third.
Race 7.
The seventh and final event of the day went to Helen Jewell's APPELLANT ($6.60) who had an adventurous trip being tough to handle in behind a painfully slow cadence that was b3ing set up front but fortunes would finally go his way at the top of the stretch as the rail opened for Antonio Reyes and he darted up the inside to get the win in 1:46.67 for trainer Ian Jewell. The Minnaloushe Stables and Dave Milburn's YOU DON'T OWN ME set a pedestrian pace of 25.93, 51.44 and 1:15.99 and seemed to have the victory locked up but couldn’t sprint home with APPELLANT and came home a clear second place finisher. Gabrielle Mathussek’s PADDY D'ORO was given every chance by rider Efrain Hernandez sitting up close to the slow pace and ended up a close third.
