The spring weather continued to taunt as grey, damp and annoyingly chilly conditions returned to East Vancouver. The Track remained fast all afternoon. There were no claims.
Race 1.
The first of the afternoon at Hastings on Kentucky Derby day went to J G Williamson Racing’s GOOD BYE PUTIN ($5.50) who, like his namesake, wouldn’t go away. He kept grinding on the outside under apprentice Fraser Aebly and eventually wore down the pace setting FINDING WAYS to win in 1:11.97 for trainer Steve Henson. Goonshow Stables’ FINDING WAYS was away quickly and assumed the lead through comfortable splits of 24.24 and 47.35 under Silvino Morales and then started to inch away from his rivals on the final bend but couldn’t quite see the trip out and was reeled in nearing the wire, denying trainer Dino Condilenios his third win of the young season. BFA Holdings’ WISE MARKET was sent along to sit second early under Amadeo Perez and the crafty veteran ran on well to save the third spot.
Race 2.
The second of the day was won by ReinDance Farm's BAKKEN OVERDRIVE ($10.50) in impressive fashion as the Cindy Krasner pupil toyed with the field, leading through fractions of 23.20, 46.73 and drew off to win by as many lengths as Kimal Santo wanted to, stopping the timer in 1:11.48. The heavily favoured BAK TO LIBERTY was forced three wide the entire trip and did well to best the rest and took home the second prize. Don and Sue Danard's MAGIC ROAD settled off of the early tempo under Brian Boodramsingh, then scooted up the inside on the stretch turn to claim third money.
Race 3.
The third event saw another impressive performance from a Turf Paradise newcomer as Joe and Gloria Russo's SHOTGUN RIDER ($7.70) easily bested his opponents. He broke well, settled in behind the speed (23.70, 47.04) under Scott Williams and took advantage of an opening on the rail during the backstretch run before taking the lead and draw off in the finals stages to win in 1:11.86. Hastings Horsepower and the Minnaloushe Stables’ TIZ VICIOUS was void of early speed and was content to sit last early under Learie Seecharan. The duo put in a sharp burst on the stretch turn to make things interesting but the winner was to much today and he settled for second money. Don Danard and Mel Snow's DRILLER was situated on the rail throughout and the nine-year-old showed that he still has game and checked in a solid third.
Race 4.
The fourth race on the card was won by Rob and Sheena Maybin’s JERSEY LILLIE ($12.40) who, straying from her usual go-to-the-front style, opted to let the speed go and sit in the pocket behind the leaders under Silvino Morales. She was then angled out three wide turning for home and just got by late, securing the win in 1:12.46. The Hastings Horsepower and Minnaloushe Stables’ LASTING LIGHT was courageous in defeat as she battled gamely on the lead through quick and contested splits of 23.36 and 46.77 and just got caught late. Tod Mountain Thoroughbreds’ KANDY KATIE was asked for speed on the rail and was in a pace duel. She did well to stay on for third.
Race 5.
The fifth of the day was won by the Side Pot Stables’ WALKINTHEWALK ($10.00), who was allowed to settle into a comfortable stride early, well back off of the pacesetters, before Scott Williams asked her to kick into gear approaching the quarter-pole. She responded with a strong late kick to win the money in 1:13.22 for trainer Dino Condilenios. The D and E Racing's LIZZIES GIRL turned in a huge performance, battling on the head end between mares through contested fractions of 23.43 and 47.10. She dug in late and was just passed in deep stretch, but held well for he runner-up spot. The Canmor Farms, Maureen Goss and Adrian Trombley’s ANAAMY had a tough trip, racing three wide on a quick pace and stayed on gamely to be a close third.
Race 6.
The sixth on the program went to Shawn and Karen Strachan’s SIR BREGOVIC ($6.70), who showed his customary brilliant speed early, leading the field through sensible fractions of 23.66 and 46.85. He then looked to be in a little deep water into the stretch but Jose Sanchez had lots left in the tank and they raced gamely to the finish for the victory in 1:11.62 for trainer Jim Strachan. Joe and Gloria Russo's MAJESTIC STREET made an impressive debut in Vancouver for trainer Patty Leaney, as he raced close to the slow early pace under Brian Boodramsingh and finished strongly to be second. Crystal Cates and Gonzalo Anderson's QUINTO SOL was tucked just in behind the speed early and, when the rail opened at the eighth-pole, she shot through but was just outrun to the wire and finished a good third.
Race 7.
The last of the day went to Swift Thoroughbreds’ BUNNY ($8.20), who hopped out of the gate on top and set a solid pace of 23.34 and 46.71 with her stablemate LICORICE lapped on her outside. Then, turning for home, Silvino Morales shook the lines at the homebred daughter of champion mare SNUGGLES (by Mo Town) and she responded by drawing away to win in the clear in 1:11.70, giving trainer Dino Condilenios a double on the day. Swift Thoroughbreds’ LICORICE completed the barn Exactor with Scott Williams in the irons. Russ and Lois Bennett's FREESTYLE was away poorly, costing her four or five lengths, but showed grit by rallying from well back, splitting horses at the top of the stretch to get up for third.
