CANADIAN DERBY WEEKEND
Quite the raiding party heading over the hills to Edmonton this weekend for the Canadian Derby meet, with Hastings’ represented in most of the weekend’s Stakes action.
Gordon Christoff’s GUNFIGHTER from the John Snow barn is set to start in the 93rd running of the Canadian Derby. The bonny Ghostzapper colt takes on fellow several Hastings rivals: SOARINGFORTHESUN goes for David and Sylvea Gregory and trainer Edgar Mendoza; Ironside Stables’ ITSMYDAY represents handler Rob VanOverschot; and REGAL RIOT lines up for trainer Rob Anderson and owners Kim Peacock and Lance Giesbrecht.
Hastings’ major force Willow Creek Farms could see their colours flown by COUNTRIFIED, who is the sole ‘Also Eligible’ and will draw into the contest if there’s an absentee.
The Century Casino Oaks
The powerful Heads and Mendoza barns also feature in the line-up for the $100,000 Century Casino Oaks. Heads saddles maiden winner AYELLOWROSEOFTEXAS for Peter Redekop, while Mendoza tightens the girth on multiple Stakes winner U DID IT for owner John Anderson. CHICA HERMOSA represents Hastings’ handler Milton Palma, who also co-owns the maiden winner in conjunction with Roxanne’s Racing Stables.
Making New Memories
Rob VanOverschot will have happy memories of Century Mile following last year’s heroics by Ironside Stables’ UNCHARACTERISTIC in the Canadian Derby. Twelve months later and he has a chance to re-live the experience when he saddles the now 4yo, alongside stablemate CHASE THE SUN, in the $100,000 Century Mile Handicap. Fellow Hastings’ handler Barbara Heads will be among the rivals with Bryan and Carol Anderson’s AT ATTENTION, while Edmonton trainer Jerri Robertson saddles DEPARTURE for our own Mike Anderson and Terri Clyde.
Infinite Patience
The Canadian Derby may be the feature event on Saturday but few at Hastings would doubt who the real headliner is at Century Mile this weekend. INFINITE PATIENCE looks to add to her extraordinary record when she takes on just five rivals, including stablemate SOLARITY, in the $100,000 Northlands Distaff Stakes. As usual, Antonio Reyes will be in the saddle as the pair look land an eighth consecutive victory (a third on the season) and a 13th career win.
Friday at Century
The Dino Condilenios-trained REMEMBERTHEALAMO will be in action on Friday night when Swift Thoroughbreds’ 2yo, who was purchased out of the Glen Todd Dispersal sale earlier this year, takes on seven opponents in the 26th running of the Canadian Juvenile Stakes.
