The weather gods helped us out immensely yesterday and we were fortunate again on Sunday as the rains held off through the day although the track was still rated as sloppy.
Race 1.
The Sunday opener was won by Dave and Sylvea Gregory's SUNGOLD BEAUTY ($4.70) who bided her time just in behind the speed then when Amadeo Perez asked her for her best in the stretch she responded to get up for the victory in 1:19.03. Ralph Jesiak's SHARPZAN ran well in his debut showing speed and led in midstretch but couldn’t quite hold off the eventual winner and took home second money. William Dorsett, Bill Dobie and John Snow's TEXAS LEGACY ran greenly on the backstretch drifting out very wide but rider Kamil Santo guided her back into the race and managed to rescue the third spot.
Race 2.
The second of the day went to Jordan Froelich's MR. QUALITY ($4.10) who full advantage of a wild early pace and easily cruised by the tired pace setters to rack up his third career triumph under Amadeo Perez for trainer Dino Condilenios. Rob and Sheena Maybin's YOUNG VIGILANTE sat just in behind the torrid pace that was being set (22.11 and 45.37) and struck the front turning for home but was weary in the lane after chasing those fast fractions and had to settle for second. The Hawaiian Shirt Guys FOOT SOLDIER broke sharply but was challenged by the Wil-a-Way Farms CALAMAZEUS through a suicidal pace and did well to stay on to be third.
Race 3.
The third race was the first two year old race of the year and the quickest of them all was the Tod Mountain Thoroughbreds and James Redekop's ROCKCLIFFE ($7.70) who broke reasonable well but showed excellent turn of foot and was hustled up to hold his rail position and was really never threatened after he secured the lead and cruised home the easiest of winners under Alex Marti for trainer Edgar Mendoza in a good time of 39.64 for the three and a half furlongs. Ralph Jesiak's LOVEABOVEANDBEYOND showed talent in her debut and did well out three wide and closed up nicely to get the runner-up spot. The Roy and Dixie Jacobson’s favoured LILSISTERLEE broke sharply but couldn’t match strides with the top two and ended up cashing in third money.
Race 4.
The fourth was hurt by two defections which left a field of four to sprint six and a half furlongs at the $6,250 level and taking home top honours was Jesse Morrison's THE ALL BUTTON ($4.10) who just lasted to win as the even money choice under Silvino Morales. He sat just in behind the dueling leaders who were setting sensible splits of 22.74 an 46.23 tried to go through on the inside approaching the far turn but that door as shut so he tipped out three deep and grinded out the victory in 1:18.26. The lone mare in the field Larry Potozny and Maria Godart’s OUREVELADY made an exciting move in the stretch and made things interesting but just fell a head short. The Willow Creek Farms’ LAUGH WITH ME battled on the pace and led turning for home but softened by his early efforts and tired to finish third.
Race 5.
The fifth of the afternoon went to the Star Lot Stables DON W ($4.90) who originally crossed the finish line second under Scott Williams for trainer Tara Neigel but was the beneficiary of a stewards disqualification and ended up the winner. He was in a perfect stalking position tracking the speed then was bumped soundly three times on the backstretch by the ReinDance Farm's BAKKEN OVERDRIVE and stewards deemed that the interference was enough to warrant the disqualification. The ReinDance Farm's BAKKEN OVERDRIVE was miles the best under Shastri Singh so it was unfortunate to see him moved back to second. Warren Wilson, June Sutherland, Neil Stajkowski, Barry Hickman and Lesley Small's WISELY PLAYED rallied out in the middle of the track to capture third money.
Race 6.
The sixth event was won by Doug Corsan, Len Houweling and Mel Snow's SLEW'S DA BOSS ($14.40), who rated beautifully by Gabriel Morales down on the inside behind a quick early tempo (23.48,47,67 and 1:12.91) stayed near the rail on the backstretch and moved out at the eighth-pole to gain command and found the finish line first in 1:45.78. The Milburn Legacy's ARCH PRINCE looked good in his Hastings debut making a huge run from off the pace to get the runner-up spot. The Willow Creek Farms’ MY COLLEGE FUND was another that ran very well considering it was his first start of the season and trainer Steve Henson did a great job having him ready to go long and he ended up a close third.
Race 7.
The last race of the day went to the Hastings Racing Club’s HOLLYWOOD MISTRESS ($6.20) who after being a little ornery to load ended up breaking on top at settled just off the Ironside Stables PRETTY ARIA and those two raced in unison through comfortable fractions of 22.62 and 46.89 and Scott Williams ended up getting a little more from HOLLYWOOD MISTRESS in the lane to win in 1:17.48 for trainer Keith Pedersen. The Rob VanOverschot trainee PRETTY ARIA stayed on gamely with encouragement from rider Alex Marti and was a clear second. Rob and Sheena Maybin's BELLAROO was stuck in between horses for much of the trip and did well to rally to be third.
There were two claims on the day:
Race 2 — Young Vigilante was claimed by Owner Robert Ginter and trainer Brent Bremner for $8,000
Race 4 — The All Button was claimed by owners Joe & Gloria Russo and trainer Patty Leaney for owner $6,250
