Four of the day’s six races went to horses bred here in B.C.
A cool, but dry, autumnal day with the heat of summer already a distant memory. The track remained fast all afternoon with four of the six races going to horses on, or near, the front throughout.
Race 1.
The Saturday opener saw Rob and Sheena Maybin's EYE BE SEEING YOU ($8.00) settle behind a moderate pace under Chris Mamdeen, then shift off the rail on the final turn to the three-path and come home with a big rush to gain command to win in 1:16.90 for trainer Rob Maybin. Gabrielle Mathussek’s PADDY D'ORO showed good speed with Amadeo Perez at the controls and they relaxed nicely in the two path, and looked to have a chance turning for home, but in the stewards view there was interference and he was moved up fromr third to the runner-up spot for trainer Carl Lausten. The original second place finisher was Milburn Legacy's FOREIGN PROTOCOL, who set a comfortable pace (22.61, 46.17) with Learie Seecharan in the saddle, but they drifted slightly into the stretch while leading and was disqualified back to third for trainer David Milburn.
Race 2.
The second race was won by Lorie Henson and Helen Klimes QUEEN OF ATTITUDE ($4.40), who used her patented last-to-first move under Amadeo Perez to get her fifth win of the season in 1:16.17 for trainer Steve Henson. KD Rycroft Racing, Dennis Dale, Paul Cashman, David and Jesse Morgan's WANDALITA took advantage of a quick and contested pace with Kimal Santo aboard and they rallied strongly to be a good second for trainer Nicole Rycroft. Willow Creek Farm's NINE OCLOCK CEASAR set a ferocious pace (22.12, 44.89) with Antonio Reyes up- as they were never given a breather by her pace rivals, and she did well to hold third for Steve Henson .
Race 3.
The third race went to White Hall Farm’s I'M IN CONTROL ($35.80) who broke sharply under Antonio Reyes, setting solid splits (23.13, 46.44), and stayed gamely to the wire to get the victory in 1:12.84 for trainer Keith Pedersen. Joe and Gloria Russo's KRIS'S GOLD was a little farther back due to her outside post with Kerron Khelawan, but came running late to be second for conditioner Patty Leaney. Dennis Dale, Morris Peter and Ed Welsh's COUNTER CAT was rationed in behind the speed on the rail by Silvino Morales and they stayed there throughout, finishing a close third for Keith Pedersen .
Race 4.
The fourth race was won by Bruce Unwin, Glen Little and Bruce Conley's LONESOME MARY ($25.50), who flew out of her outside gate under Kimal Santo and cleared off to a sharp score for trainer Bruce Unwin in 39.90 for the three-and-a-half-furlong trip. Canyon Farm's KITTEN KANDY was off a step slow then got rolling on the turn under Kerron Khelawan and was catching the winner but ran out of real estate, ending up second for trainer Craig MacPherson. Jim and Anne Alendal’s MINA MARINA was fast away from the gate but couldn’t quite stay with the winner and tired a bit late to be third under Silvino Morales for trainer Cindy Krasner .
Race 5.
The fifth of the day saw Joe and Gloria Russo's DEPUTY'S DANCER ($31.50) overcome his outside post and eventually clear to get the rail (22.22, 45.76) befofre comfortably proving best in 1:17.02 for trainer Patty Leaney. Jordan Froelich and Dino Condilenios MORETHANSOULTITLE was fast early, then took back to track the speed and came up the inside in deep stretch under Kimal Santo to be second. Marty Miller's ASKMENOQUESTIONS was shuffled back to last early, costing him any shot at winning, but was able to rally between runners late to get third under Amadeo Perez for Edgar Mendoza.
Race 6.
The sixth went to Willow Creek Farm's NOTHINGBUTSUNSHINE ($6.80), who found herself on the lead through easy fractions (23.34, 47.64) and she made no mistakes, sprinting clear to win easily in 1:18.21 for Steve Henson. Trinity West and Willow Lake Farms and Stables STILETTOS ONLY was in a good spot close to the slow pace and stayed on determinedly to be second under Bebeto Harvey for trainer John Snow. TORONTO, September 28, 2024 – Dresden Row, the youngest horse in the field, got the better of his older rivals in Saturday’s Grade 3 $135,000 Durham Cup at Woodbine.
Multiple graded stakes winner and 2023 King’s Plate victor Paramount Prince was powered to the front in the early going of the 1 1/16-mile main track feature for 3-year-olds and up, with Rapid Test shadowing the pacesetter to his outside into the opening turn.
Paramount Prince, riding a two-race graded stakes (Grade 3 Dominion Day and Grade 2 Seagram Cup) win streak, held a one-length advantage over Rapid Test through an opening quarter in :23.79, as 3-year-old Dresden Row, with Ryan Munger in the irons, sat third.
The lead duo continued their tussle after a half in :47.49, while Munger kept his charge well within striking range in third.
As the field came off the turn for home, it was anyone’s race as Dresden Row, 7-year-old elder statesman Ron’s Gizmo (supplemented to the race), and Stanley House confronted the pacesetters.
Midway down the lane, it was Dresden Row and Ron’s Gizmo who set the stage for a stirring finish as they matched strides throughout the final 100 yards.
At the wire, Dresden Row emerged victorious by a hard-fought head. Stanley House finished third, followed by Rapid Test and Paramount Prince.
The final time was 1:42.04.
