A glorious summer’s afternoon, with cloudless skies and temperatures in the high 20s, brought out a big crowd to see the wiener dogs and six exciting races. The track was fast and fair all day.
Race 1.
The Saturday opener saw Mort Hall and Praven Sorensen's DREAMB ($3.30) hit the line first in a very quick 1:16.43. The daughter of Will Take Charge was relaxed in the two path, a length off of the pacesetter DREAM JEREEM, then approaching the far turn she drew even and started to inch away turning for home, drawing clear clear late for a big win for trainer Barbara Heads. Jordan Froelich's DREAM JEREEM set sensible fractions under Kimal Santo (22.71, 46.10) and had the lead until the stretch, but stayed-on well to be second for Dino Condilenios. James Jamieson, Darryl Hammond, Chad Hunter and Tammy Snow's CHICKASAW was closer than usual under Richard Balgobin, due to the relaxed early splits by the front runners, and still had lots left but had to settle for third money for trainer Tammy Snow.
Race 2.
The second race of the afternoon was won by Canyon Farm's PURSUE ($8.50 ), who took advantage of a hotly-contested pace and flew late going from last to first under Richard Balgobin to win in 1:16.26 for trainer Craig MacPherson. Canyon Farm's MR MORRIS completed the owner/ trainer Exactor, rallying up the inside and just getting up in deep stretch to claim the runner-up spot under Silvino Morales. TC Racing's STANFORD BAY endured a tough trip, being embroiled in a pace battle (22.74, 45.28) under Kerron Khelawan, and it took its toll as he was reeled-in late, finishing a good third for trainer Rob Gilker .
Race 3 - The Ermon McLaughlin Purse
The third of the day saw Pat Jarvis, Dan Lee, Nigel Reid and Roberta Staley's WIRLY GIRLY ($9.70) break on top and set leisurely splits (23.44, 47.19) under Kerron Khelawan, and they were able to have just enough left to win in 1:17.39 for trainer Pat Jarvis. Kevin Scott's MERRY BLUE turned in a huge effort in her second start of the season, rushed up to join the slow pace with guidance from Chris Mamdeen, and they battled right to the wire, ending up second for trainer Kevin Scott. Lois Bennett's VIVA LA VINO had a tough trip after being wrestled back to last by Antonio Reyes, then tried to move up on the rail in the stretch but never did find room and finished a wrapped-up third for trainer Barbara Heads.
Race 4.
The fourth race went to Swift Thoroughbreds’ FEBRUARY ($3.60), who was never seriously threatened as she and Kimal Santo opened up a big lead, racing through quick splits (22.02, 45.66) and easily holding her margin to the finish in 1:18.04 for trainer Dino Condilenios. Pooli Thoroughbreds’ MYGIRLLILLY ran a much improved race with the blinkers being removed and she rode the rails to a second-place effort under Antonio Reyes for trainer Steve Henson. Ed Claggett's JUST SCARLETT tracked the quick pace with Kerron Khelawan at the controls and they held second until deep stretch, where she was passed by MYGIRLLILLY, and took home the third-place cheque for Craig MacPherson.
Race 5.
The fifth race was won by Lois Bennett's TOUCH THE SUN ($8.50) who was afforded a very easy lead (24.98, 48.75, 1:12.75) and Silvino Morales took full advantage, guiding him to a decisive score in 1:43.89 for trainer Barbara Heads. Lois Bennett's SNAP TO IT was a little wide through the opening half-mile under Kerron Khelawan, but he cleverly got him to the two path heading into the clubhouse turn, giving him every chance but could not get to his stablemate, checking a clear second for Barbara Heads. Mel Snow, Conrad Rozenek and Don Danard's NEWHART ran an improved race under Richard Balgobin, riding the rail to a good third for conditioner Mel Snow.
Race 6.
The sixth race on the program went to Rob and Sheena Maybin's JERSEY LILLIE ($4.40), who was sent off to lead early by Chris Mamdeen, then yielded passing the stands for the first time, sitting behind the speed, before being asked to join the leaders at the quarter pole from where they made the front and just lasted in 1:18.04 for the win for Rob Maybin. Demetris Topouzis B C CHRISTIE was chasing the quick pace (22.19,45.69) under Kuri Powell, made the top at the eighth pole and just missed in a big effort at long odds for trainer Demetris Topouzis. Bob Leffler, Bryan Killins and Gord McCormick's ANOTHERSUNNYDAY suffered from a wide trip under Kimal Santo but still managed to get close, ending up a very close third for conditioner Dino Condilenios.
