The rain stayed away on a bright and breezy autumnal afternoon, with perfect conditions for racing. The track remained fast and fair throughout the day, with winners coming from both on and off the pace .
Race 1.
The first race on the Sunday program went to the Hastings Racing Club and Mainline Stable's FINDING WAYS ($3.80), who was afforded a pretty easy lead (22.58, 45.70) under Silvino Morales and was never really challenged, winning in a swift 1:16.27 for trainer Nancy Betts. J G Williamson Racing’s BACK SHACK was well rationed by Antonio Reyes, sitting just off of the winner, and they stayed there throughout, finishing second for trainer Steve Henson. Michelle Roberts-Henson and Mark McGinnis’ RACING RIVER was positioned in third early with Kerron Khelawan at the controls, and they made a decent move on the stretch turn, but the speed had things too easy up front and was only able to get third money for Rob Henson.
Claims:
BACK SHACK was claimed by owners Mr & Mrs Harold Barroby for trainer Harold Barroby
FINDING WAYS was claimed by owners Rob & Sheena Maybin for trainer Rob Maybin
Race 2.
The second of the day was won by LH Stables’ KIKIS LOVE OF LIFE ($4.60), who rated kindly behind the speed under Brian Boodramsingh, then forged to the front on the stretch turn and easily held his big margin to win in 1:17.57 for conditioner Rob VanOverschot. Larry and Margaret Getson and Rocking Bar B Outfit’s MAX BOOSTER made a menacing move on the final bend, with Kimal Santo guiding him to the three path, but could not stay with the winner and ended up a clear second for Frank Barroby. Swift Thoroughbreds’ FEBRUARY was sent for the lead (22.14, 45.50) and had a clear advantage with Silvino Morales up, but got a little tired late and finished an improved third for trainer Dino Condilenios
Race 3.
The third race went to G.O. Stables and Alexa Ramirez's GROOVIN' IS BAK ($7.00), who was relaxed behind a very fast pace under Bebeto Harvey, then shifted to the three path and just ran by in deep stretch to get the win in 1:17.71 for trainer Erick Gutierrez. Demetris Topouzis’ B C CHRISTIE, who was sharp early and settled in a perfect spot behind the torrid tempo (21.74, 45.77), cruised up to take command turning for home but was just caught late in a big performance. Star Lot Stables DON W was taken to the rear of the field early and put in a nice late run under Antonio Reyes to get into the third spot for trainer Terry Jordan.
Race 4.
The fourth race of the afternoon went to Praven Sorensen and Mort Hall's DREAMB ($3.80), who was settled by Amadeo Perez at the back of the field through the early going, then started to creep up passing the stands for the first time as the pace slackened and spent the final half-mile in the three path before grinding out a hard-fought and narrow win in 1:45.42 for trainer Barbara Heads. Stewart Spencer's LICORICE was in an ideal spot, tracking the pace (23.06, 47.80, 1:13.07) and fought valiantly to the wire under Antonio Reyes but was just outrun late in a big effort for Keith Pedersen. Andrea Rossi's BAKBURNER, who was sent off to the lead by Kimal Santo, battled until the far turn but couldn’t stay with the top two and did well to hold third for Edgar Mendoza.
Race 5.
The fifth race saw Don Musgrove’s PINEAPPLE TIDBITS ($5.40) rally from last to first, relaxing off of very quick fractions (23.73, 47.51, 1:12.11) under Silvino Morales, to get her third win of the season in 1:45.56 for trainer Keith Pedersen. WYN Racing Stables’ ICE BREAKER was in midpack through the early stages, then took the lead to the stretch with Amadeo Perez aboard but got reeled in late and finished a good second for trainer Larry Grieve. Last Call Racing Stable and Cathy Bornn’s MISS THE HYPE was another that was held in reserve early before running on sharply late to just miss second and end up a close third for trainer Brent Bremner.
Claims:
MISS THE HYPE was claimed by owners Rob & Sheena Maybin for trainer Rob Maybin
Race 6.
The sixth race on the program went to Rob and Sheena Maybin's BAK TO LIBERTY ($10.10), who contested the sensible early fractions (24.01, 47.95, 1:12.29) with Ridge Balgobin up then, when asked, started to shake loose on the final bend before building a big lead which he held to the wire in 1:44.39 for trainer Rob Maybin. James Redekop and Stefan Ferrario's BROKE AN BROKEN was given a tall task, coming from far back behind a moderate pace as the heavy favourite. They flew late but could only rescue second money for Terry Jordan. Fred and Sheldon Kwan's PARKER POINT was tucked in behind the speed under Kimal Santo and they stayed-on determinedly to be third for trainer Harold Barroby.
Claims:
BAK TO LIBERTY was claimed by owners J G Williamson Racing for trainer Steve Henson
Y VEE R was claimed by owners Rob & Vicky Gilker for trainer Rob Gilker
Race 7.
The final race of the day was won by Bob Leffler, Bryan Killins and Gord McCormick’s ANOTHERSUNNYDAY ($19.40), who relaxed beautifully for Silvino Morales, racing in midpack before cruising up on the final turn and sweeping by in the stretch to post a big win in 1:17.83 for trainer Dino Condilenios. G.O. Stables and Alexa Ramirez's PENALTY TO RANGERS set a good pace (22.49, 46.01) under Kimal Santo and led to the stretch, but stayed strong for second for trainer Erick Gutierrez. In a rare twist, he was disqualified for interference to SHAMRA but SHAMRA was then disqualified for a different incident which moved him back up to second. Harold and Sandra Barroby's BAKZONE rallied in the late going to be fourth under Kuri Powell and was promoted to third after the disqualifications. The Saphire Stables and Ted Feenstra's SHAMRA was far back early, then started to make ground on the inside with Brian Boodramsingh at the controls, struck trouble in the stretch and had to settle for third and was briefly promoted to second but then disqualified back to sixth for an earlier foul.
A very rare occurrence to see two DQ's in the same race.
A Chiefswood Breeders’ Stakes Sweep
TORONTO, September 29, 2024 – Roscar, Saccharine, and Side Street gave Chiefswood Stables a homebred podium finish in the $400,000 Breeders’ Stakes, the final jewel in the OLG Canadian Triple Crown, Sunday at Woodbine.
Thor’s Cause, 4-5 choice Hurricane Clair, and Side Street scrapped over the early lead in the 1 ½-mile marathon over the E.P. Taylor turf on a picture-perfect fall day, as Justin Stein, aboard Roscar, tucked the son of Oscar Performance-Rosemere into fourth of seven.
It was Thor’s Cause, who finished seventh in The King’s Plate, who emerged on the front end and took her six rivals through a tepid opening quarter in :25.08, followed by Hurricane Clair, Side Street, and Roscar.
The lead duo continued their tussle that saw Thor’s Cause a head on top through a half in :52.13. Stein had Roscar well within range of the leaders, comfortably positioned in third after a mile.
Heading into the final turn, a host of hopefuls burst onto the scene, including Roscar, who burst through along the rail to seize command in early stretch.
From there, it was the Chiefswood show, as Roscar dug in along the rail, while Saccharine picked up the pursuit of his stablemate to the outside, as did Side Street.
Roscar confidently fended off Saccharine – both trained by Rachel Halden – by 1 ½ lengths for the victory, with a game Side Street, trained by Layne Giliforte (who sent out Chiefswood’s Touch’n Ride to win last year’s Breeders’), a further three lengths back in third. King Rosso was fourth.
The final time over good going was 2:34.72.
