Racing Around

A good-sized Sunday crowd enjoyed a balmy day’s racing under high cloud, interspersed with plenty of sunshine. The track was fast all afternoon with all bar one race falling to horses on, or close to, the pace throughout.
Sunday’s Racing Review by Mike Heads
Race 1.
The first on the Sunday program saw Jordan Froelich's THIRSTY FRIEND ($3.00) gallop up to get the early lead in moderate fractions (23.30, 47.67) under Kimal Santo, and he comfortably held his margin to the wire in 1:18.40 for trainer Dino Condilenios. Sharlea Stable's BARBERRY BANDIT broke best under Richard Balgobin and was wrestled back to sit in the second spot before making a menacing move on the stretch turn to briefly get his nose in front. However, he couldn't sustain his run and finished a clear second for Hall-of-Fame conditioner, Frank Barroby. Rob and Sheena Maybin's EBONY EYES was content to relax early under Chris Mamdeen, then produced a quick three-wide run on the backside to engage the top two, before staying on well to be third for Rob Maybin.
Race 2.
The second of the afternoon went to Pat Jarvis, Dan Lee, Nigel Reid and Roberta Staley's WIRLY GIRLY ($17.60). She showed good speed to get to the rail and set a leisurely tempo (22.88, 46.30) with Kerron Khelawan guiding and they sprinted home smartly to win in 1:16.42 for conditioner Pat Jarvis. Lois Bennett's VIVA LA VINO was very good in her 2025 debut, spending the entire trip in the three-path under Antonio Reyes and ran-on determinedly to get the runner-up spot for trainer Barbara Heads. Canmor Farm's ABOVE AVERAGE was out-sprinted through the opening stages, then shifted off the rail by Amadeo Perez to race alongside the winner. The pair looked to have a great chance at the top of the lane but just weakened late to be a close third for trainer Mark Cloutier.
Race 3.
The third on the program was won by Stewart Spencer, Sean Ederer, Randy Klaassen, Ryan Lee and Siobhan Callander's FOOTHILLS BLVD. ($2.20), who got into a perfect spot early with Kerron Khelawan in the irons and relaxed beautifully on a sensible pace (22.83, 46.52) then, when asked, drew clear for a big score in 1:17.83 for trainer Keith Pedersen. Randy Lane and Roy Nelson's ISLAND LIVING was at the rear of the field early under Kimal Santo, then produced a late run to get into the second spot approaching the wire for trainer Cindy Krasner. Fiery Fillies Stable's FEISTY ELLA saved every inch of ground with Richard Balgobin up and they ran into the third spot late for conditioner, Tammy Snow.
Race 4.
The fourth race went to Swift Thoroughbreds’ HORATIO ($19.00), who settled into a perfect spot with Richard Balgobin at the helm and they stayed on the rail, coming up the inside of the leader at the sixteenth pole, cruising on to a convincing win in 1:16.15 for trainer Dino Condilenios. Mount View Stable’s JOSE JOSE was very quick from the latch and immediately took command, getting a sensible quarter in 22.73, was then challenged through a demanding second quarter-mile, hitting the mark in 45.63 under Kerron Khelawan and took a big lead to the stretch but just got a little tired late, ending up a good second for trainer Rob Gilker. Canyon Farm's VECTOR was off slow then rushed up to engage the leader with Kimal Santo aboard and raced-on gamely, checking in a good third after the tardy beginning for trainer Craig MacPherson.
Race 5.
The fifth on the program saw Gillian and Jim Jamieson, Nigel Reid and Roberta Staley’s TAMARA MINE ($4.10) break well after being reluctant to load under Kerron Khelawan. She settled calmly behind the pace, was then eased out three-wide on the final turn and ran-on best to the finish in 1:17.94 for trainer Pat Jarvis. Don Musgrove and Bradley Closer’s PINEAPPLE TIDBITS, who was held in reserve by Amadeo Perez, commenced her move on the stretch turn and came running in between runners to claim second money for trainer Keith Pedersen. Hastings Racing Club's BAKBURNER was embroiled in a spirited pace duel (22.31, 46.34) with Kimal Santo aboard and, while they won the pace battle, they could not hold off the top two and ended up a good third for Steve Henson.
Race 6.
The sixth of the day went to Wil-a-Way Farms, Gail Jewsbury and Pat Jarvis’ ZENARI ($7.90), who was sent right to the lead by Kuri Powell, easily fended off her lone pace rival and raced away on the field to a decisive triumph in 1:17.48 for trainer Pat Jarvis. Forster Stable's ON MY GOOD SIDE was sequestered at the back of affairs and produced an impressive late kick to get the runner-up cheque for trainer Charlene Miller in his 2025 debut. Rob and Sheena Maybin's THISONESONME settled in behind the speed under Chris Mamdeen and made good ground in the stretch to nail down third money for conditioner Rob Maybin .
