Friday Night Round-Up, by Mike Heads
Race 1.
The first on the Friday night program saw a very impressive debut from Nicole Droder's MISS SUNDAZE ($9.80), who galloped up to lead from her outside gate under Silvino Morales to set lively splits (22.30, 46.04), then sprinted away on the final turn to win easily in 1:16.41 for trainer Craig MacPherson. Joe and Gloria Russo's SAILING FORCE was away awkwardly, costing her four or five lengths at the start, and made a nice move between runners approaching the far turn but did not get near the winner, ending up a good second for Patty Leaney. Jeff Sengara's FLYIN'WILDNFREE showed good speed, but opted to settle in behind the pacesetter before staying-on well down the stretch, losing second late and ending up a promising third for conditioner Cindy Krasner.
Claims:
MISS SUNDAZE was claimed by owners WYN Racing Stables Corp. for trainer Larry Grieve
Race 2.
The second of the evening went to WYN Racing Stables’ KEEP IT COMING ($5.40), who tracked the speed under Kerron Khelawan, then produced a swift move on the backside and drew clear to a convincing victory in 1:45.00 for trainer Larry Grieve. Shamrock Racing Stables and Brian Phillips NU SOUP FOR BABY was off terribly, hopping at start and leaving him in last early before making a serious bid for the lead nearing the far turn. However, he lacked racing room under Chris Mamdeen and, despite getting through on the rail, settled for an unlucky second for trainer Brian Phillips. Rob and Sheena Maybin's LOGICAL AL was in a good striking position under Silvino Morales and ran-on well to be third for conditioner Rob Maybin.
Race 3.
The third race was won by Jordan Froelich's MAKENA'S JOY ($5.40,) who was relaxed beautifully behind the a slow pace by Silvino Morales, then seized an opportunity when the rail opened at the far turn and he drew-off to a good score in 1:17.92 for trainer Dino Condilenios. Joe and Gloria Russo's GO LENT GO had a tough trip early, racing a bit wide on the first turn before being guided to the rail by Amadeo Perez. They followed the same opening that the winner got through to be a solid second for trainer Patty Leaney. Greg Pyc, Nancy Betts and Rob Cust's QUINTECENTS was sharp early, setting a sensible tempo (22.81, 47.07) under Ridge Balgobin, drifted slightly nearing the far turn and couldn’t stay with the top two, checking-in third for trainer Nancy Betts.
Claims:
MAKENA’S JOY was claimed by owners Hardick Bhuva & Demetris Topouzis for trainer Demetris Topouzis
Race 4.
The fourth race on the program went to Bryan and Carol Anderson, Denise Praill and Nigel Reid’s STRAIT OF GEORGIA ($4.20), who a sat a perfect trip behind a lively pace (23.56, 47.07, 1:11.77) under Antonio Reyes, was given his cue approaching the far turn and produced a powerful late kick in the stretch to win clear in a sharp 1:43.69 for trainer Barbara Heads. Warren Wilson, June Sutherland, Neil Stajkowski, Ross Switzer and Barry Hickman's PAY MY WAY was content to sit and watch the contested pace up front and, when Kerron Khelawan asked for more on the final turn, he responded with a big move and was flying late to be second for trainer Charlene Miller. Dave Milburn's BUTTONWOOD TREE set a contested pace under Kuri Powell and was forced to check nearing the top of the stretch, finishing fourth but subsequently moved up to third after a disqualification. Canyon Farm's VECTOR was also on the pace then seemed to shy from outside pressure, causing some interference on the inside, and was DQ'd from third to fourth.
Race 5.

The fifth race was the most exciting of the night as every horse had a shot at the top of the stretch and, proving best was Rob and Sheena Maybin's EYE BE SEEING YOU ($25.60), who was well back early with Chris Mamdeen in the saddle before cruising up the rail on the final bend to split runners at the sixteenth pole and grab a narrow victory in 1:17.31 for trainer Rob Maybin. Sasquatch Stables’ SOMTHING ELUSIVE was nestled in behind the speed under Kerron Khelawan, came four wide in the stretch and just missed in another big effort for trainer Jim Smith. Joe and Gloria Russo's DEPUTY'S DANCER was in a speed duel with FRASER LANDING and they ripped off quick fractions (22.34, 45.67). He won the pace battle but ended up third under Amadeo Perez for conditioner Patty Leaney.
