Four Each for Heads and Reyes
Barbara Heads' scintillating form continued Sunday with a four timer; three of which were ridden by Antonio Reyes — who also notched four wins on the day
A large band of rain, which seemingly eluded the local weather forecasters, caught racegoers by surprise as summer pressed pause. The rain failed to dampen spirits or the dirt, however, and the track remained fast.
HIGHLIGHTS:
Antonio Reyes had four riding victories on the day.
Amadeo Perez visited the winners circle twice.
Barbara Heads had four training scores.
The Pick 5 carryover is at $58,096 and the Pick 6 is at $1,925.
Sunday’s Racing Review
Race 1.
The first of the day went to Peter Redekop's ANOTHERSUNNYDAY ($3.10) who took advantage of a drop in class and some comfortable fractions (22.50, 46.11) under Antonio Reyes and drew away in the final stages to win in a good time of 1:17.19 for trainer Barbara Heads. Jordan Froelich's JERSEY LILLIE was away well and chose to settle in behind ANOTHERSUNNYDAY engaged that rival at the quarter-pole and raced together until the stretch where she started to lose ground but ended up a clear second. The Hastings Racing Club's HOLLYWOOD MISTRESS was slow to begin which really hurt her chances and the pace being slow she could only rescue third money.
Race 2.
The second of the saw the Nite and Day Stable and Joanne Todd's HE'S RELENTLESS ($4.00) spend the entire mile and a sixteenth journey on the lead (24.26, 47.78 and 1:12.50) in the three path under Amadeo Perez and losing all the ground didn’t matter as he drew off to a convincing score in 1:45.07 for trainer Brian O'Connell. The Hastings Racing Club's PRINCE CAIRO sat a perfect trip behind the three ply duel but couldn’t get near the winner and ran on to be second. The Willow Creek Farms ALL LIQUORD UP battled on the pace early and stayed on well to be third.
Race 3.
The third of the afternoon saw Bryan and Carol Anderson's AT ATTENTION ($6.80) visit the winners circle for the second straight time as he was cleverly ridden by Antonio Reyes settling far back off of some suicidal fractions (23.52, 45.97 and 1:11.09) then split horses at the eighth pole and just edged out a very game STAY FANTASTIC at the wire in 1:43.64 for conditioner Barbara Heads. The Tod Mountain Thoroughbreds STAY FANTASTIC turned in another big effort under Amadeo Perez for trainer Edgar Mendoza only to lose by the narrowest of margins at the finish. Russ and Lois Bennett's CHA CHING rallied from last to just get up to claim the third spot.
Race 4.
The fourth race went to George Gilbert's TAKE CHARGE GWEN ($7.40) who rushed up to lead from her outside gate and never looked back getting a quarter mile in 22.55 and the half-mile station in 46.07 then cruised home to a two length victory in 1:17.50 giving trainer Barbara Heads. Rob and Vicky Gilker's MAKIN IT UP showed excellent gate speed and was up on the pace and ran on gamely through the stretch to secure second money. Gary Johnson, Zeta Hannah, Sharlea and Pumpkin Stables ZETAMARIE who was also near the pace early sitting on the outside of MAKIN IT UP and stayed on well to get the third spot.
Race 5.
The fifth race went to Russ and Lois Bennett's BLACK METAL ($8.30) who was allowed to set a very leisurely early tempo under Amadeo Perez getting splits of 24.24, 49.19 and a dawdling six panels in 1:14.44 while the field to crept up to him approaching the quarter-pole he had speed in reserve and sprinted to the wire winning in 1:45.35 giving Barbara Heads her fourth training win of the day. The Ironside Stables PARKER POINT was a little farther back than usual and made a big move on the final turn but the leader had things too easy on the head end so he had to settle for second. Doug Corsan, Len Houwelling and Mel Snow's SLEW'S DA BOSS was also hurt by the slow fractions but did manage to save ground on the rail and got up to be third.
Race 6.
The sixth was won by the Willow Creek Farms and Fabio Chiesa’s TIZ MEOW ($5.30) who was perfectly ridden by Scott Williams securing the rail early and staying there until he stretch drive and clawed by a stubborn RACING RIVER to win in 1:18.08 for trainer Steve Henson. Rod Therres’ RACING RIVER showed an abundance of early speed and got to the top setting splits of 22.24 and slowing things down to 46.03 then started to sneak away but got reeled in nearing the line. The Minnaloushe Stables and Dave Milburn's YOU DON'T OWN ME was a little farther back off the pace than normal and came running late to nail down third money.
Race 7.
The last of the afternoon went to Cameron Hill and the Forster Stables ALWAYS IN CHARGE ($6.60) who led the field on a merry chase running through fractions of 23.04, 47.69 and made no mistakes drawing off to win in 1:18.69 for trainer Dave Forster and rider Antonio Reyes piloted his fourth winner of the day. Nigel Reid, Dan Lee and Pat Jarvis’ PAGODA RIDGE broke alertly and was sent off for early position secured the two path going into the first turn and raced alongside the winner until the stretch and battled on well to easily get the runner-up spot.
