Another glorious May afternoon at Hastings with no end to the dry spell in sight. The track was fast and fair all afternoon, with winners going gate-to-wire and coming from off the pace.
Race 1.
The first race on Sunday was won by the Canmor Farm's MAKEITORBREAKIT ($4.70) who relaxed beautifully off of a suicidal pace (21.18, 44.98) set by MONTE, took the lead turning into the stretch and proved best in 1:18.58 under Amadeo Perez for trainer Mark Cloutier. Rob and Sheena Maybin's EYE BE SEEING YOU was content to settle far back through the early stages and came with a good run to be a clear second. Jim Strachan's DEBATABLE was last early and flew late to get into the third spot.

Race 2.
The second went to Michelle Roberts-Henson, Brad Henson, Randy Henson, Dan Henson and Trevor Irwin's BARNEY GOOGLE ($5.50), who took his usual spot at the rear of the field early, then unleashed a long sustained three-wide move, hit the front inside the sixteenth pole and drew away to win comfortably in 1:19.66 under Amadeo Perez for trainer Rob Henson. The cameras could not separate the Swift Thoroughbreds REMEMBERTHEALAMO, who set a contested pace (23.15, 47.04) and stayed well to finish on even terms with Willow Lake Farms and Stables’ ROLLIE’S SPIRIT, who suffered from a three-wide trip early and was also game in the lane.
Race 3.
The third on the afternoon saw a big performance from the WYN Racing Stables’ TAM TRICKY ($6.90), who was allowed to set a leisurely tempo of 23.25 and 46.98 under Kimal Santo and had lots left in reserve to hold the competition at bay in 1:18.31 for veteran trainer Larry Grieve. Larry Potozny and Jordan Froelich's NO PEOPLE turned in a huge effort, rallying through under Silvino Morales who persevered with her even with the saddle slipping far back to her flank. The Willow Creek Farms and Fabio Chiesa’s DUXONTHEPOND turned in an impressive run in her first start here in Vancouver, closing strongly to be third despite the slow fractions for freshman trainer Shawn Lawson.
Race 4.
The fourth on the program was the first mile-and-a-sixteenth test of the season and taking home first prize was Helen Jewell's APPELLANT ($13.50), who relished the opportunity to go long and took full advantage, rallying from last to first for the victory under Kerron Khelawan in a sharp 1:45.72 for trainer Ian Jewell. The WYN Racing Stables GORKY PARK was in a good striking spot, put in a solid run on the final bend but couldn’t match strides with the winner and checked in second. Rob and Sheena Maybin's MCMURPHY tracked the speed in third early, then lost position approaching the far turn and came on again late to be third.

Race 5.
The fifth of the day went to Larry Potozny, Peter Langelaan and the Wil-a-Way Farms’ FLORIDA GATOR ($9.90) who, ridden patiently at the rear by Antonio Reyes, was produced in between horses on the stretch turn, had to await room briefly and then shot through an opening at the eighth pole to nail down the win in 1:16.94 for Barbara Heads. George Gilbert's SMART LAD was also taken back off of the early fractions and made a nice move to get in contention and was forced five wide into the lane and kept grinding on to be second. Shawn and Karen Strachan’s SIR BREGOVIC set a contested pace (22.24, 45.23) and ran his usual gritty race to be a close third.
Race 6.
The sixth race was dominated by Brian Albertson and Dennis Tucker’s INDYETTA ($3.40) who broke on top under Amadeo Perez, was pressured through splits of 22.34 and 46.52, started to distance herself from the field on the turn and drew away in the stretch to win in 1:18.57 for trainer Cindy Krasner. Harry Houlden and Ashley Martin's SHESBOURBONONICE was relaxed nicely by apprentice Fraser Aebly and kicked in late to be second. Don and Sue Danard's B C CHU CHU ran a much improved race after getting stuck out in the three path for most of the race and did well to be third.
Race 7.
The final event of the afternoon went to BFA Holdings’ WISE MARKET ($5.10) who was aggressively handled by Amadeo Perez to get the front end from his outside post and settled on a sensible pace (22.90, 46.34). The pair asserted their superiority in the stretch to win convincingly in 1:17.24 for trainer Mark Cloutier, who won the first and the finale for a double on the day. Lorie Henson, Helen Klimes and Sharon Pring's QUAGMIRE ran his usual determined race, finishing a game runner-up under Fraser Aebly for Steve Henson. Derek Harris and Pat Marini's ADITYA was another that ran a good one off the big layoff, checking in third.
