Hastings Race Reviews, Sunday July 24
Race 1.
The first of the day as expected went to the heavily A.P. PHAROAH ($3.10) as he settled in the clear in the two path just off of the comfortable early fractions of 23.16 and 47.39, then sprinted away when it counted to post a quick final time of 1:17.30 for owner Peter Redekop, rider Antonio Reyes and trainer Barbara Heads. The More Rewards Syndicate’s DOUBLE SAW broke on top and set the pace but couldn’t match strides with the winner and ended up a clear second. The Canyon Farm's BAKALLEY raced on the inside throughout and checked in third.
Race 2.
The second of the day went to Rob and Vicky Gilker's JACK’S REIGN ($7.90) who sat a perfect trip under Kimal Santo, settling beautifully behind an easy pace of 24.92, 49.49 and 1:14.65 then started to sneak away heading for home and won with energy in reserve. Helen Jewell’s APPELLANT sat in mid pack early and rallied on the final turn and secured the runner-up spot in deep stretch. THE Minnaloushe Stables and Dave Milburn's YOU DON'T OWN ME also sat off of the slow early tempo and ran on well late but could manage to snare third money.
Race 3.
The third race on the card was easily taken down by Rob Thacker's AIRAFFAIR who sat a couple of lengths off of the speedy FLYUNDERTHEGRAYDAR, who set quick splits of 22.61 and a spicy half-mile of 45.65, then AIRAFFAIR powered on by at the eighth pole and was never threatened winning by lengths. The Hawaiian Shirt Guys FOOT SOLDIER and Robert Moretto’s FLYUNDERTHEGRAYDAR showed his usual customary quick early speed and led the field to the lane and just stayed on to save the second spot. Rob and Sheena Maybin's EYE BE SEEING YOU closed up quickly through the final quarter mile to get the third spot.
Race 4.
The fourth of the afternoon went to Marty Miller's BLOWINGWITHTHEWIND who broke on top, which is a huge asset going three and a half furlongs, and fought on to game score under Amadeo Perez for trainer Mark Cloutier in 39.94. The Canyon Farm's ROAD CLOSURE missed the break and then rushed up to get in contention and actually made the front turning for home under Efrain Hernandez but couldn’t quite hold on and ran an impressive second in his debut for trainer Craig MacPherson. Swift Thoroughbreds LICORICE was in tight early and did well to rescue the third spot in a promising first start for trainer Dino Condilenios.
Race 5.
The fifth event was also for two year olds going three and a half furlongs and winning in his debut George and Donna Gilbert’s COUNTERACT who was well prepared by trainer Mark Cloutier as he made the lead and ran tough to turn back all challengers with Amadeo Perez in the saddle in 39.94. Dave Milburn and Mark Freeman’s FILLY FATALE raced well again battling on the lead and just lost a tough photo for the win and ended up in the runner-up spot. Morris Peter and Dennis Dale’s AIR FORCE was super impressive kicking off her career but her outside post didn’t do her any favours as she had to race three wide throughout on the lead and just missed for trainer Keith Pedersen who had the daughter of Counterforce turned out like a seasoned pro but had to settle for a close third today.
Race 6.
The sixth race was won by Peter Redekop's AYELLOWROSEOFTEXAS who was embroiled in an early pace duel (23.56) and didn’t seem to get any breathers and then started to inch away approaching the stretch under Antonio Reyes to win well for trainer Barbara Heads in 1:46.23. The Century Plaza Stables STORMY BLUE showed a 180 degree turnaround from his prior two starts finishing a much improved second and actually threatened to win he race at the top of the lane for trainer Carl Lausten. Warren Wilson, June Sutherland, Neil Stajkowski, Barry Hickman and Lesley Small's WISELY PLAYED was shuffled back early costing him a better position and he ran on smartly to be third.
Race 7.
The seventh and final event of the day went to Mohamad Khan's NEW CHASER who obviously learned a lot from the mistakes he made in his first start as he broke well and led the field through a contested pace of 22.45 and 46.39 and then when challenged in the stretch he found another gear under Lenny Seecharan to win in 1:19.50 for trainer Milton Palma. Russ and Lois Bennett's SHOWMAN lacked early position and was held back to sixth place of the seven early but had proved to be a good move as he secured the rail and eased off of it turning into the lane and finished a clear runner-up. Ed Claggett's CASSIDY COWBOY also turned in an improved effort and checked in third for trainer Craig MacPherson.
