A hot and humid day made it thirsty work for horses, riders, racegoers and wiener dogs. Fortunately, there was plenty of water on hand for all competitors, no matter how long their legs were. The track was fast all day with the majority of winners on, or close to, the pace throughout.
Race 1.
The first Thoroughbred event on Wiener dog Saturday went to Tod Mountain Thoroughbreds’ KAY'S KITCHEN ($4.20) who was void of early speed with Kimal Santo up but then started to pass runners in the three path and cruised on to victory for trainer Edgar Mendoza in 1:18.01. Foster Armstrong, Ed Claggett and Craig MacPherson's JUST MISTY was embroiled in a pace duel which saw her light up fractions of 22.34 and 45.78 and hold on well for second. Rob and Sheena Maybin's VALERIE VALESKI settled in behind the speed, came off the rail to challenge in the stretch and managed to be third.
Race 2.
The second was won by Taanya Lipkovitts' ANAAMY ($5.20) who took advantage a slow early pace (23.06, 46.50) and led the field throughout in a rapid 1:17.92 under Amadeo Perez for trainer Nicole Rycroft. The Hastings Racing Club's RACINO was away well and opted to settle behind the speed and ran on sharply with Kerron Khelawan in the stretch to be second for trainer Pat Jarvis. Bob Leffler, Bryan Killins and Gord McCormick’s ANOTHERSUNNYDAY missed the break by a length, which left her in a tough spot, racing three wide throughout and she battled on gamely to be third.
Race 3.
The third of the afternoon saw Tod Mountain Thoroughbreds’ HARTLEY MANOR ($15.20) catapulted out of her outside gate, fly to a big lead and never gave them a chance as she cruised home clear under Silvino Morales in 40.14 for trainer Edgar Mendoza. Patty Leaney's DREAMING D ‘ORO looked good in her debut, closing on the rail to be second. Tod Mountain Thoroughbreds and James Redekop's BECKETT’S BEST did everything right and ran on the outside on the stretch turn and checked in a close third.
Race 4.
The fourth on the program went to Saphire Stables and Ted Feenstra's SHAMRA ($9.60), who looped the field under Ridge Balgobin on the backstretch to win going away for trainer Jim Loseth in 1:46.56. Christine Ammann, daughter of winning trainer Jim Loseth, owns REA MEA who ran another game one, battled on a suicidal early pace of 22.85, 46.05, then started to weaken approaching the six-furlong mark in 1:12.12 but remained strong to the wire to hold onto he runner-up spot. Ironside Stables’ PRETTY ARIA elected to sit close to the fast early pace and it took its toll as she was tired late, ending up a close third.
Race 5.
The fifth race was won by Bryan and Carol Anderson's AMANDA ($6.00), who sat just in behind the speed, angled to the rail on the final bend and snuck through on the inside to get in the final stride in 1:18.27 under Silvino Morales for trainer Barbara Heads. Willow Creek Farms’ NINE OCLOCK CEASAR ran too good to lose, setting a lively pace of 21.86 and 45.87 before driftingand slightly into the stretch allowing the winner to sneak through. She remained game and just missed. WYN Racing Stables TAM TRICKY was caught in a quick pace and got a little tired in the late going, ending up a close third.
Race 6.
The sixth saw Peter Redekop's AN ARMY OF LIGHT ($3.10) make his Hastings debut a winning one as he led the field throughout (22.34, 46.08) under Amadeo Perez and held the lead while drifting out late in 1:19.10 for conditioner Barbara Heads. Rob and Vicky Gilker's CROWN COUNCIL was reluctant to load by once he was in he broke well chasing the pace and ended up a close second. RNH Stable’s CAIRO CRUSADER was far back early then made a solid run on the outside to claim the third prize.
Race 7.
The last of the afternoon went to Don Tetaranko's SILK STILETTOS ($11.50) who was afforded a clear lead through sensible splits of 24.21, 47.67 and 1:12.64 under Scott Williams and she stayed the trip for trainer Craig MacPherson to win in 1:44.84. Willow Creek Farm's IRISH LUNA broke on top and chose to sit in the second spot behind the runaway leader. She was getting to the winner late but ran out of real estate and ended up second. Tod Mountain Thoroughbreds’ OSTRACIZE was nestled in behind the leaders on the inside and stayed there for the entire trip, finishing third.
