Cup Crowd Out in Force
The first Cup Day since 2019 brought race fans out in force as JUST JIMMY took the feature race and trainer Rob Maybin saddled a remarkable three-timer
Cup Day was bathed in glorious sunshine with July temperatures to match. A light breeze kept everyone’s temper in check and the track remained fast.
CUP DAY HIGHLIGHTS :
The handle came in at an impressive $910,314.
Rob and Sheena Maybin enjoyed three wins, three seconds and a third from their seven runners on the day.
Apprentice Shaquil McIntosh had two riding victories.
Amadeo Perez also visited the winners circle twice.
The Pick 5 carryover is $62,837.
The Pick 6 carryover sits at $3,022.
Hastings Cup Day Race Reviews
Race 1.
The opener went to the Canmor Farms and Bud Malette's BE LIKE ME ($5.60) who made her debut a winning one as she led the field through fractions of 23.26 and a soft half-mile of 48.21 under rider Amadeo Perez and had enough to find the finish first in 1:20.13 for trainer Mark Cloutier. The Willow Creek Farms BEST ONE YET sat a nice trip just off of the early tempo and ran gamely to the wire but had to settle for second. Art Christensen's BLING IT ON HOME made a good run to get up and be third.

Race 2.
The second was won by Rob and Sheena Maybin's BELLAROO ($3.30) who sat a nice trip in behind the speed under Silvino Morales patiently waiting for racing room and once an opening was sighted entering the stretch she quickly darted through and drew off to an easy win in 1:18.72. The Canmor Farm’s TEXAS HUMOR was taken back off of the early pace and was cruising up smartly heading into the far turn but couldn’t find room between horses and had rally wide and did well to get second. The Greenlaw Farm's LIVING SKY showed good speed with the blinkers added today and led the field of fillies (22.51, 46.92) to the stretch but was pressured throughout got a little tired late and just lost the photo for second and ended up third.
Race 3.
The third was taken down by Rob and Sheena Maybin's CERTIFIABLE ($7.30) who was away well and battled through contested splits of 24.34, 48.04 and 1:13.98 and started to inch away on the stretch turn to get a dominating win in 1:47.02 under an exuberant Shaquil McIntosh who saluted the large crowd by blowing kisses to the applauding public as he approached the winners circle. The Maybin barn completed the Exactor as DONE THAT closed up late to get the runner-up spot under apprentice Angela Straight. Suzanne Anderson's HEREVERYWISH sat a perfect trip in behind the speed and rallied up the rail to gain third money.
Race 4.
The fourth on the card went to the Minnaloushe Stables and Dave Milburn's SLOOP JOHN B ($7.20) who was cleverly ridden by Learie Seecharan as he settled in behind a quick pace then scooted up the inside on the backstretch and never looked back as he drew off to a big score in 1:46.39. Rob and Sheena Maybin's MISS THE HYPE was given a perfect ride by Silvino Morales saving every inch of ground on the rail and fought on to get the second money over the Tod Mountain Thoroughbreds VALUE DANCER who was forced to run wide through the final quarter mile and claimed the third prize.
Race 5.
The fifth of the day went to the Pocket Aces Racing Stable's SILVER ARROW ($8.20) who bided her time well back off of a quick early tempo under Amadeo Perez and when given her cue she responded with a powerful move to sweep by the leaders to win in 1:48.72 for trainer Steve Henson. The Renfrew Racing's CAROLINA GENT turned in a huge effort battling under Kuri Powell sitting near the lightning fractions that were being set (23.92, 47.50 and 1:13.50) then snuck through on the inside to take the lead but couldn’t hold off the oncoming SILVER ARROW and finished second for trainer Mark Freeman. Rob and Sheena Maybin's JACK DON'T DRINK showed no interest early and looked to be a threat turning for home as he was winding up from far back but had to settle for third.
Race 6
The sixth race gave Rob and Sheena Maybin a triple on the day as ACCEPT NO OTHER ($34.90) ground out a victory winning a three horse photo at the wire. Shaquil McIntosh earned his second win of the day by guiding him into a nice position early and just out running his rivals in 1:47.55. Nancy Betts, Dennis Dale and Ed Welsh's DON WITH THE WIND chased the early pace secured the lead past half-mile station in 48 flat and led the field to the stretch and was just reeled in late but held well for second. The JT Racing and Ryan Deyotte's TRAPALIS was far back early and made a strong five wide bid on the stretch turn and just ran out of ground and had to settle for third place.
Race 7 - The Cup
The seventh on the day was the feature ‘The Cup Allowance’ event and taking home top honours was Don Tetaranko's JUST JIMMY ($3.90) who broke on top and set sensible fractions of 22.68 and 46.18 while pressured by Tod Mountain Thoroughbreds VALUABLE COWBOY and then shrugged off that opponent and drew away to win impressively in 1:16.98 for trainer Craig MacPherson and jockey Efrain Hernandez. Larry Potozny and Peter Langelaan's FLORIDA GATOR was void of early speed but put in a solid move on the turn and into the lane to get the second spot. Roy and Dixie Jacobson’s COUNTRY COWBOY was last away from the gate and stayed here until the eighth pole where he started to pass runners and shared the third spot nearing the wire.
Race 8.
The last of the day went to the Side Pot Stables ARIKARA ($11.10) who blazed through fractions of 22.18 and 45.44 alongside the Dreamtime Stable and Bruce Unwin’s TOBESUNNY shook that one off and drew clear to win easily in 1:17.38 under Antonio Reyes for trainer Dino Condilenios. Rob and Sheena Maybin's OSTRACIZE ran a solid second concluding a brilliant day for the Maybin barn that featured three wins, three seconds and a third from the seven runners Rob Maybin and assistant Demetris Topouzis saddled. The More Rewards Syndicate’s WIDE AWAKE made a great appearance for trainer Tara Neigel in the paddock and ran to her looks as she checked in third in her first start since being claimed last fall at Woodbine.
