Hastings Review, Sunday August 14
Race 1.
The Sunday opener saw Russ and Lois Bennett's VIVA LA VINO ($6.50) turn in a very impressive debut effort. After encountering some traffic issues heading into the backstretch she rallied smartly on the final turn under Antonio Reyes to just get up for the victory in 1:17.94 for trainer Barbara Heads. The Rein Dance Farm's BAKKEN OVERDRIVE ran a much improved race holding the inside well after bolting in his last start and led the field to the half-mile station in 46.77 and was running hard to the wire but just got beat and ended up a clear second. The Canyon Farm's BAKALLEY led the field early then made a miscue leaving the first turn costing him valuable position and he managed to regain his thoughts and came back on to get the third spot.
Race 2.
The second of the day went to the Century Plaza Stables STORMY BLUE ($10.00) who was away alertly and settled nicely with Silvino Morales on board through splits of 23.88, a sensible half-mile in 48.10 and six panels in 1:13.53 then proceeded to inch away from the competition heading into the lane and drew off to a clear win in 1:44.73 for trainer Carl Lausten. The More Rewards Syndicate’s DOUBLE SAW was given an ideal ride by Scott Williams sitting just off of the winner through the comfortable early tempo and was running well at the end but had settle for second money. Warren Wilson, June Sutherland, Neil Stajkowski, Barry Hickman and Lesley Small's WISELY PLAYED was stuck out wide for much of the trip which cost him but he battled on to be third.

The third of the afternoon went to Derek Harris and Pat Marini's ADITYA ($9.60) who found his young legs today being stretched out to a mile and a sixteenth for the first time this year and Scott Williams relaxed him beautifully and then cruised on for a big score in 1:45.58 for conditioner Barbara Heads. Rob and Sheena Maybin's MUSTACHIO and MASTER EWEN battled for the second spot and just lasting after a chasing a hot pace (23.82, 47.62 and 1:12.26) was MUSTACHIO in a photo over MASTER EWEN.
Race 4.
The fourth on the program was a dominant performance for the Willow Creek Farm's GUNS N AMMO ($5.80) who sat a perfect trip in the two path under Amadeo Perez then asserted his superiority on final turn and he drew off to a good win in 1:45.85 for trainer Steve Henson. Nancy Betts, Dennis Dale and Ed Welsh's DON WITH THE WIND set the early fractions (24.49, 48.57 and 1:13.97) and stayed on well to be second. JT Racing and Ryan Deyotte's TRAPALIS had to sit a ,my closer than usual as he wasn’t doe any favours with the way the pace scenario turned out so he did very well to get up to be third under Ridge Balgobin.
Claims: DON WITH THE WIND was claimed by owner/trainer Rob VanOverschot
Race 5.
The fifth event of the day went Ernie Chu, Rob and Vicky Gilker's Y VEE R ($11.70) took the field wire-to-wire in a very game performance with Kimal Santo up earning the win after setting contested fractions of 23.43, 47.27 and 1:13.12 and he had plenty left to hold off everyone to win in 1:46.39 for trainer Rob Gilker. The Ironside Stables SHARPZAN ran a big one in his first start after the claim as he chased Y VEE R around the track with Kerron Khelawan in the irons and stayed on to be second for trainer Rob VanOverschot. The WYN Racing Stables ROYAL AIR FORCE was stubborn to load but once in he was away a little slow and raced three wide much of the trip and did well to save third money.

Longacres Mile
Former Hastings favourite FIVE STAR GENERAL, ridden by Leslie Mawing, rallied down the centre of the stretch to snatch third place behind winner Slew’s Tiz Whiz in the Longacres Mile at Emerald Downs on Sunday.
In the process, ‘The General’ achieved Longacres Mile history by becoming only the second horse to finish in the top three in three consecutive Miles.
Five Star General ran second to Peter Redekop’s Anothertwistafate in 2020, third to Background in 2021, and was third again to Slew’s Tiz Whiz on Sunday.
Meanwhile, PRINCESS OF CAIRO who, like Five Star General was formerly owned and trained by the late Glen Todd, narrowly failed in her bid to land a second consecutive Emerald Distaff when finishing second to the Alan Bozell-trained longshot, Zippin Sevenz.
Due to the annual PNE fair, racing at Hastings resumes next Monday and Tuesday, August 22nd and 23rd. First race is 2:00 p.m.
