The final Saturday played out under brooding skies, although the rain mostly relented. The track coped well with an overnight deluge, was sealed and good for the first race and ‘wet fast’ for the rest of the afternoon
Race 1.
The first on Saturday saw Joe and Gloria Russo's STAR FINALITY ($4.30) break on top with Learie Seecharan aboard and they led through sensible splits of 22.66 and 46.29, maintained her lead to the stretch and dug in late for the victory in 1:17.63 for trainer Patty Leaney. Randy Lane and Roy Nelson's ISLAND LIVING sat a perfect trip in behind the speed under Antonio Reyes, then popped out to challenge in the stretch and just missed, finishing second for trainer Keith Pedersen. Willow Creek Farm's C C SUNRISE was prominent early but couldn’t match strides with the top two and came in a clear third.
Race 2.
The second of the day went to Jordan Froelich's BELLAROO ($3.50), who needed every inch of the stretch to get up for a narrow win under Amadeo Perez for trainer Dino Condilenios. The win made BELLAROO the winningest horse at the meet with five victories. Deyotte Racing’s RICHARDS COMMAND turned another huge run for trainer Ryan Deyotte as she settled just off of the speed, took a slim advantage into the lane and grudgingly gave way in the final stride under Antonio Reyes. Bulldog Bros Racing and Paul Lesmaurier's ANIMA raced on a quick and contested pace (22.20, 4576) under Silvino Morales and stubbornly stayed on for third in a good effort.
Race 3.
The third of the afternoon was won by Rob and Sheena Maybin's NINE OCLOCK CEASAR ($2.30), who earned a hard fought triumph under Chris Mamdeen. The Rob Maybin trainee broke sharply and battled on the head end with DRILL BABY DRILL through moderate fractions of 22.66 and 46.59 and just out-gamed her rivals to win by a long nose. WYN Racing Stables’ DRILL BABY DRILL was equally as game under Kimal Santo and ran too good to lose, checking in an unlucky runner-up. Darryl Hammond, Kristy Hammond, Bill Dobbie and John Snow's TEXAS LEGACY was relaxed early and content to trail the field before Learie Seecharan asked her to go. She responded with a strong late kick and finished a very close third.
Race 4 — Ladies Against Lumps Cancer Awareness
The fourth on the program saw Rob and Sheena Maybin's ARIKARA ($4.00) find the finish line first under Ridge Balgobin. She led through spirited splits of 22.64 and 45.97, then opened up a daylight lead turning in, but got weary late and just lasted in 1:16.84 for trainer Rob Maybin. Jim and Anne Alendal’s HARLAN'S ANGEL tracked the pacesetter under Kimal Santo, was gaining late, but ran out of racetrack and had to settle for second money. Don Danard and Mel Snow's ROSE OF TEXAS chose to settle in behind the speed on the rail when summoned by Chris Mamdeen and she was making up ground late and claimed the third spot.
Race 5 — $75,000 Glen Todd Fantasy Stakes
The $75,000 Glen Todd Fantasy for two-year-old fillies going a mile and a sixteenth went to Don and Sue Danard's BROOKE MAGIC ($14.40), who was given a textbook ride by Brian Boodramsingh, positioned just behind the speed and, when the rail opened turning for home, she shot through for a big win in 1:45.76 for trainer Mel Snow. Renfrew Racing, B and B Racing, Breen Racing, Eugene Chan and Dave Milburn's LIZZIE'S RAYNE was given every chance by Amadeo Perez, sitting on the lead through comfortable splits of 23.82, 48.16 and 1:13.99 and won the battle for second by a nose for trainer Dave Milburn. Russ and Lois Bennett's VIVA LA DIVA set the pace from the rail under Antonio Reyes, but drifted at the top of the stretch, allowing the winner to get through and then lost a tight photo for second.
Race 6 — $75,000 Glen Todd Ascot Graduation Stakes
The $75,000 Glen Todd Ascot Graduation for two-year-olds at a mile and a sixteenth and getting to the wire first was Peter Redekop's AUGUST RAIN ($5.00) who, after an unfortunate trip in the Futurity, bounced back to his brilliant best, winning in a quick 1:44.40 under Amadeo Perez for trainer Barbara Heads. He sat most of the trip in the three-path and, with the blinkers being removed for the race, he relaxed kindly behind a moderate pace (23.81, 47.84 and 1:12.92) before sprinting home when asked and drawing clear for the victory. Canyon Farm's VECTOR saved every inch of ground on the inside with Antonio Reyes aboard, then angled out on the final turn before running on strongly to the wire and was well clear of the field in the second spot for conditioner Craig MacPherson. Wil-a-Way Farms, Gail Jewsbury and Pat Jarvis’ DIOCLES was far back off the early pace and flew home late to get into the third spot.
Race 7.
The last of the day went to Russ and Lois Bennett's VIVA LA VINO ($5.00), who was content to watch a quick pace up front under Antonio Reyes and pounced on the stretch turn to drive by for an easy score in 1:16.58 for trainer Barbara Heads. The Exactor was completed by another Russ and Lois Bennett runner as FREESTYLE rallied from far back under Brian Boodramsingh to get second money. George Gilbert's BELCARRA PARK blazed on the lead through fractions of 21.86 and 45.11 under Amadeo Perez but the strides started to shorten at the eighth-pole and they managed to hold for the third spot.
