A magnificent and unseasonably warm autumnal afternoon, relished by racegoers on hand to witness some of the very best Stakes horses in the Pacific Northwest. The track was fast.
Race 1.
The first race on a beautiful Saturday afternoon went to JG Williamson Racing's STAR ENTRY ($25.80), who received a perfect trip and ride by Kerron Khelawan, as they stalked a quick pace and took over in the stretch to win in a ridiculously fast 1:15.47 for trainer Steve Henson. Hastings Horsepower and Minnaloushe Stables’ I'M CORFU battled on a lightning pace of 22.42 and 44.68 under Brian Boodramsingh, did win the pace battle but not the war as he checked in a very good runner-up for trainer Peter Milburn. Mainline Stable’s FINDING WAYS was away well but quickly challenged on the head end, succumbed to the pressure on the final turn, but held well to be third under Silvino Morales for trainer Nicole Rycroft.
Race 2.
The second was won by George Gilbert's FLY BOY JACK ($11.50) who was impressive in his debut, tracking the speed under Amadeo Perez and just outrunning his main rival late to win in 1:17.97 for trainer Barbara Heads. Mauro Comensoli's STANFORD NORTH set a comfortable pace under Silvino Morales (22.78 and 46.51), leading to the stretch and just missed for trainer Dino Condilenios. Sandra Corsan’s BORROWED EQUITY made a good return to the races after a four-month break and checked in third under Brian Boodramsingh for conditioner Mel Snow.
Race 3.
The third race was the $100,000 Ballerina for fillies and mares going nine furlongs and, as expected, Bill DeCoursey and RNH Stables’ INFINITE PATIENCE ($2.40) took home top honours under Antonio Reyes in 1:49.48. The daughter of Sungold was tucked in behind the speed early, then snuck through on the inside down the backside and drew clear to another impressive score for trainer Barbara Heads. Canmor Farm's ABOVE AVERAGE turned in a big effort under Silvino Morales, racing wide through much of the trip and running on well to be a clear second. Willow Creek Farm's WE B THREE was squeezed a bit away from the gate and trailed the field early. Fortunately, Amadeo Perez quickly got her back in contention behind the winner on the rail and she ran on nicely to be third.
Race 4.
The fourth of the day saw Russ and Lois Bennett's SET TO SHINE ($4.30) who lead the field throughout under Amadeo Perez, getting fractions of 22.21 and 44.94 and he had lots left to seal the victory, hitting the line in 1:15.72 for trainer Barbara Heads. George Gilbert's SMART LAD was put in a perfect striking position by Silvino Morales but couldn't match strides with that eh winner and finished a clear runner-up. Hastings Racing Club's PRINCE CAIRO was positioned well back off of the speed and ran smartly to the finish to secure the third spot.
Race 5.
The fifth race went to Rob and Sheena Maybin's MISS THE HYPE ($7.50) who settled comfortably close to the early pace under Chris Mamdeen, waited patiently for room then struck the lead close to home in 1:45.13 for conditioner Rob Maybin. The Maybin's completed the Exactor as their OSTRACIZE just missed after racing wide through most of the journey under Ridge Balgobin and unfortunately had to settle for second. Bruce Unwin’s TOBESUNNY was off a step slow and ended up getting an unlucky trip on the rail lacking room at various times which did cost her any shot of winning and had to settle for third.
Claims:
MISS THE HYPE was claimed by owners WYN Racing Stables Corp. for trainer Larry Grieve
OSTRACIZE was claimed by owners MJD Stables for trainer Demetris Topouzis
Race 6.
The sixth of the afternoon was $100,000 BC Premiers for three year olds and upwards going a mile and three-eighths and proving best was Pauline Felicella’s SUNBIRD ($7.30) under Amadeo Perez who stalked a slow early pace and flew home late to win in a very good time of 2:17.89 for trainer Terry Jordan. Bryan and Carol Anderson's AT ATTENTION was part of a very slow early tempo (24.71, 49.70 and 1:15.85) under Antonio Reyes but couldn’t sprint home with the winner and ended up a clear runner-up. WYN Racing Stables ACCIDENTAL HERO was hurt by the pedestrian pace and did well to rescue third money after being far back early.
Race 7.
The seventh of the day saw Hastings Horsepower and Minnaloushe Stables LASTING LIGHT ($4.30) break sharply from the latch and set a contested pace of 22.64 and 45.96 and stayed resolute under Learie Seecharan in the head end and just found the line first in 1:17.82 for trainer Dave Milburn. BFA Holdings CARLA'S HONOR was happy to be glued to the rail early and stayed there for the entire trip and scooted up the inside just missing by a nose. Don Danard and Mel Snow's ROSE OF TEXAS changed her usual speedy running style and settled off of the pace then breezed up on the outside turning for home to be a danger and ended a close third under Fraser Aebly for trainer Mel Snow.
