A warm and weirdly sultry day for September, with hazy skies and no wind helping to produce a humid afternoon for racegoers at Hastings. The track was fast and fair all afternoon with winners coming from both off, and on, the pace.
Race 1.
THE first on Saturday saw Canyon Farm's PURSUE ($9.20) sit in a perfect spot on the rail behind a contested pace under Amadeo Perez, before shaking loose at the top of the stretch and surging by the leaders for the win in a rapid 1:43.59 for trainer Craig MacPherson. Don Tetarenko’s JUST JIMMY set all the fractions (24.42, 47.67, 1:12.33) with Kerron Khelawan aboard and they took the lead to the stretch but we’re reeled-in late, giving him his fifth consecutive runner-up effort this season for Craig MacPherson. Willow Creek Farms and Fabio Chiesa’s NEIGHBOR was situated perfectly on the comfortable pace by Antonio Reyes and they stayed on determinedly, ending up a very close third for trainer Steve Henson.
Race 2.
THE second of the day had co-winners as the photo finish could not separate two of the runners. BFA Holdings’ CARLA'S HONOR ($3.20), who was given a textbook ride by Kimal Santo after breaking alertly, made the lead in deep stretch and was matched at the wire by G.O Stables and Alexa Ramirez's TEXAS HUMOR ($3.90), who was reserved behind the speed by Brian Boodramsingh and closed up quickly late to finish on even terms for trainer Erick Gutierrez. Bob Leffler, Bryan Killins and Gord McCormick’s ANOTHERSUNNYDAY was nestled in behind the pace, then made a dash on the inside for the lead under Amadeo Perez but couldn’t stay with the top two and ended up third.
Race 3.
THE third race saw the Estate of Russ Bennett and Lois Bennett's SET TO SHINE ($8.20) get up in deep stretch to secure the victory after being rationed in behind a quick pace by Amadeo Perez. They hit the line a swift 1:16.04 for conditioner Barbara Heads. Hastings Racing Club and Mainline Stable's FINDING WAYS ran huge race, despite being pressured through fast fractions of 21.74 and 44.92, but was just caught approaching the wire and held second for trainer Nancy Betts. Don Danard and Mel Snow's CASCADE BILLY was part of the pace with Brian Boodramsingh at the controls and they stayed gamely to the wire, ending up a hard-luck third for trainer Mel Snow.
Race 4.
THE fourth race was # 1 of the Marathon series and, taking home top honours, was Dave Milburn's BUTTONWOOD TREE who was relaxed beautifully by Kuri Powell, getting sensible splits (24.44, 48.84, 1:13.56) before asserting his superiority on the final bend and drawing clear to an impressive score in 1:51.16 for trainer Dave Milburn. Willow Creek Farms and Fabio Chiesa’s FRANKIE MACHINE surprisingly showed good speed, setting the pace on the inside under Taylor Jeszenszky and fighting valiantly to finish a good second for trainer Steve Henson. Lance Giesbrecht and Gord Christoff’s ERLICH was in a nice spot under Amadeo Perez and ran on well to be third for trainer Rob Anderson.
Race 5.
THE fifth race was the $50,000 Delta Colleen for fillies and mares, withSwift Thoroughbreds’ BUNNY ($12.00) parlaying a nice trip and a great performance to land a narrow victory and take the top prize in 1:43.97 for trainer Dino Condilenios. Dennis Dale, Morris Peter and Ed Welsh's AIR FORCE was ultra game throughout, setting moderate fractions (24.00, 47.58, 1:12.48) and just missed in a huge effort for rider Brian Boodramsingh and trainer Keith Pedersen. Bill DeCoursey and RNH Stables’ INFINITE PATIENCE was sent up on the pace heading into the stretch for the first time under Antonio Reyes but couldn’t stay with the top two under her 126 pound impost.
Race 6.
THE sixth race was the $50,000 S W Randall Plate for older horses going a mile-and-an-eighth and, wiring the field, was Peter Redekop's APPREHEND ($4.40) who muscled his way to the lead under Amadeo Perez, setting dawdling splits (23.32, 48.32, 1:13.48), before overcoming some anxious moments on the stretch turn and sprinting clear to a decisive win in 1:49.63 for trainer Barbara Heads. Hastings Horsepower and Motley Crew's SETTECENTO was keen early and sat close to the slow pace under the careful guidance of Learie Seecharan and, while they could not stay with the winner, they easily held the second spot for trainer Dave Milburn. WYN Racing Stables’ PHANTOM RIDE spent the entire race in the three-path and Kimal Santo did well to keep him running on late to be third for conditioner, Ian Jewell.
Race 7
THE seventh race was won by Willow Creek Farm's SELF SERVING ($7.90), who was covered up behind the pace under Antonio Reyes, then tipped-out three wide and just got up in the shadow of the wire to claim the victory in 1:17.12 for trainer Steve Henson. Milburn Legacy's FOREIGN PROTOCOL, who was sent off to the front by Learie Seecharan and raced clear through fractions of 22.42 and 45.86, seemed to be home but just got caught in the last strides and finished second for trainer Dave Milburn. Hammer Racing Stables’ FOOT SOLDIER was also sharp away from the gate, was given every chance by Silvino Morales and checked-in a good third for Rob Henson.
