Endless sunshine, coupled with a light breeze made for another prefect racing day at Hastings on Sunday. The track was fast and fair all day long.
Race 1.
The first on Sunday was won by Doug Corsan, Len Houwelling and Mel Snow's SLEW'S DA BOSS ($13.20) who was perfectly rated by Brian Boodramsingh, sitting a close third early behind a slow pace before outsprinting his rivals to the wire to win in 1:17.68 for trainer Mel Snow. The Minnaloushe Stables and Dave Milburn's BABY GRAND was a little stubborn to load but once in the gate he broke on top and led the field through fractions of 23.21 and 47.25 and stayed on gamely to the wire to win the battle for the runner-up spot. Don Danard and Mel Snow's DRILLER was in a good position throughout and given every opportunity by Antonio Reyes and ended up a close third.
Race 2.
The second of the afternoon went to Willow Creek Farm's first time starter SELF SERVING ($11.80), who did everything right racing on a very slow pace (23.85, 48.49), then drew away powerfully in the lane under Antonio Reyes for trainer Steve Henson to win in 1:19.33. Sandra Corsan's BORROWED EQUITY raced wide throughout but still managed to get the second spot. The heavy favourite Georges and Terry Georgeopoulos’ UNION MAN was tucked in behind the leaders but was briefly steadied on the stretch turn and ran on to be third. The best news of the second race concerned apprentice Fraser Aebly, who was unseated from his mount BARBERRY BANDIT on the final turn but was uninjured and rode the next race.
Race 3.
The third of the day was an allowance event at a mile-and-a-sixteenth and crushing the field was Peter Redekop's AROLLERCOASTERRIDE ($3.40), who relished the stretch out in distance, turning in a stakes-calibre performance under Amadeo Perez by winning easily in 1:43.53 for conditioner Barbara Heads. Century Plaza Stable’s STORMY BLUE was very good again today, setting a solid pace (23.88, 47.25 and 1:12.34) and ran tough until the top of the stretch but simply hooked into a monster and had to settle for second. Roger Snow, Don Danard and Conrad Rozenek's BOITANO was off a step slow, then was asked to be in contention three wide through the opening five furlongs which took its toll as he was a little tired late and wound up third.
Race 4.
The fourth on the card was reduced to a field of three after a couple of morning scratches. Taking advantage of the small field was the Dreamtime Stable’s COCORITA ($5.00), who sat off the slow pace under Ridge Balgobin and proved best in 1:18.61, giving trainer Greg Beneen his first victory at Hastings. The WYN Racing Stables FILLY FATALE took her usual spot on the lead, setting a leisurely tempo (23.44, 47.74) but couldn’t quite stay with the winner and ended up a close second. Bruce Unwin’s TOBESUNNY had the toughest trip of all, as she had a little trouble on the backside then put in a long three wide move and briefly had the lead but couldn’t see it out in her first start of 2023.
Race 5.
The fifth race on the program was an impressive Hastings debut by Peter Redekop's AQUITANIA ARRIVAL ($4.20), who led from start to finish under Amadeo Perez. Hastings’ leading rider asked the Barbara Heads trainee to settle comfortably through fractions of 22.45 and 45.56, then sped off to a big lead to win in 1:16.29. The Blue Willow Dairy’s ROOKIE YEAR was allowed to relax in behind the speed under Silvino Morales and rallied up the rail to be second well clear of the third horse, Ironside Stables' ITSMYDAY - who was another that closed from far back early to get in the money.
Race 6.
The sixth was won by the Hawaiian Shirt Guys’ FOOT SOLDIER ($5.90), who sat in a nice spot under Silvino Morales behind a four horse speed duel, had to await room midway on the turn but pushed out three wide turning for home and outran them all to the finish in 1:17.56 for trainer Dino Condilenios. Stewart Spencer's KNOPFLER changed tactics and came from off the pace, which proved to be a good move as he closed sharply on the final bend and just missed under Kerron Khelawan for trainer Keith Pedersen. Michelle and Mark McGinnis RACING RIVER was well meant today but suffered from a four wide first turn on a hot pace (22.12, 45.22), put all the speed away and held bravely in the lane but was caught late.
Claims:
FOOT SOLDIER was claimed by owners Hammer Racing Stable for trainer Robert Henson
Race 7.
The final race provided us with a longshot win by Barbara and Steve Taylor’s SETTEBELLO ($25.00), who battled from gate to wire on the lead and found a little more than the rest late under Chris Mamdeen for trainer Jean Lavallee to win in 1:19.86. Tod Mountain Thoroughbreds MILO'S COMMAND was fastest from the latch and cruised to the lead on the rail through moderate splits of 23.06 and 47.64, but was outrun and finished second. Judy Bradley’s SOMTHING ELUSIVE was taken back off of the early pace and unfortunately ended up in between horses on the backside, getting shuffled back, but shook loose at the top of the stretch to get the third spot.
Claims:
MILO’S COMMAND was claimed by Rob & Sheena Maybin for trainer Rob Maybin
