Summer ended with little ceremony as an early autumnal wind prompted Hastings’ racegoers to reach for their jackets for almost the first time since spring. The sun shone, though, and the track remained fast all day.
Race 1.
The Saturday first went to Bryan and Carol Anderson's AMANDA ($7.00) who raced just in behind the speed was held back in traffic and had to wait for racing room until Silvino Morales guided her in between runners at the top of the stretch and she did the rest drawing alongside the pace setter and won comfortably in the end for trainer Barbara Heads in 1:18.30. Bruce Unwin’s INDYGOGOLD ran another stellar race as she closed up smartly from far back to be second under Jose Gomez. The More Rewards Syndicate’s WIDE AWAKE was settled nicely by Amadeo Perez off the sensible fractions of 22.86 and 46.73 and was a danger on the final turn and ran on well to be third.
Race 2.
The second of the day was won by Gabriele Mathussek’s PADDY D'ORO ($5.00) who was cleverly ridden by Efrain Hernandez, setting a slow early pace and backing up the interior splits to 24.24, 49.50 and 1:14.57 and he remained game through the lane to win in 1:46.17 for veteran conditioner Carl Lausten. Lillian Meehan Jarvis’ KLONDIKE GENTLEMAN who was always in close attention to the pace then crept up on the backstretch to engage PADDY D'ORO but couldn’t quite match strides late and did well to hang on for second. Sean Ederer and Stewart Spencer's KNOPFLER had another eventful trip on the rail ending up stymied behind the slow pace and never did get clear finishing another unlucky third.
Race 3.
The third of the afternoon was narrowly taken by Willow Creek Farm's GUNS N AMMO ($6.20). He missed the break slightly which cost him some early position but with the fractions being slow he never lost contact with the pacesetters. He then made a quick burst on the backside to challenge for the lead and battled gamely to the wire to win by a desperate nose in 1:46.07 under Amadeo Perez for trainer Rob Henson. Nick and Pauline Felicella's JACOBS CALL was ambling along early leading through 24.64, 49.14 and 1:14.81 under Kerron Khelawan and lost his advantage at the far turn and couldn’t regain it while grinding it out on the rail and bumping with the winner in the stretch but had to settle for second. There was a rider and stewards enquiry but the results did not change as the stewards ruled both horses contributed to the minor bumping in the lane so no change was warranted. The Tod Mountain Thoroughbreds VANCOUVER'S HUNTER was in a good striking position but couldn’t stay with the top two and ended up third.
Claims:
JACOBS CALL was claimed by owner Edwin Claggett and trainer Craig MacPherson
Race 4.
The fourth event on the card went to Christine Ammann's REA MEA ($4.20) who took no chances and was sent off to lead by Silvino Morales through splits of 21.93 and 45.64 and stayed strong throughout winning in a good time of 1:16.84 for trainer Edgar Mendoza. The Ironside Stables PRETTY ARIA ran another top race checking in a solid second despite having no early position and racing wide through much of the trip. The Tod Mountain Thoroughbreds WANDALITA was fractious in the gate and chose to settle far back off the early pace and ran on without threatening the winner to be third.
Race 5.
The fifth was won impressively by Dennis Dale, Morris Peter and Ed Welsh's AIR FORCE ($6.70) who left the gate far better this time and was put on the lead through fractions of 23.14 and 47.06 under Antonio Reyes and was never really threatened through the final quarter mile to win in 1:13.29 for trainer Keith Pedersen. Renfrew Racing, B and B Racing, No Trump Stable, Matt Elder and Bill Breen's MATSQUI was nestled in behind the speed down on the rail and sprinted home to just get up for the runner-up spot. Don and Sue Danard's B C CHU CHU showed a lot of ability in her first start as she broke a little slow and was forced out four deep on the first turn was left there on the backside finally was able to get into the three path and just got nipped for second at the wire ending up third in a very encouraging career debut.
Race 6.
The sixth on the day went to the Taylur Veloz Group, Dreamtime Stable, Todd Foster and Bruce Unwin’s KEEPINGTHEDREAM ($7.30) who led the field to the first turn under Jose Gomez in 22.64 and slowed the tempo down to the half-mile junction in 47.24 then continued on the head end to lead into the stretch and just had enough left to secure the win in 1:20 flat for trainer Bruce Unwin. Warren Wilson, Neil Stajkowski, June Sutherland, Ross Switzer and Barry Hickman's HARBOUR STORM did well to overcome her outside post and rush up in between horses late under Ridge Balgobin 5o the get the second spot. The Ironside Stables SHE'S ON FIRE was impressive in her debut as she raced close to the pace while in traffic was asked to take back to be positioned in behind the speed and ended up closing with interest in th3 stretch to be third.
Race 7.
The seventh was won by easily by Stan Sharma's VALUE DANCER ($2.70) who took a drop in class and easily bested these maidens to win by as much as Amadeo Perez wanted to for trainer Brian O'Connell in 1:47.72. The lone filly in the race tracked the speed (24.04, 48.00 and 1:14.24) and breezed by them all entering the backstretch and drew off for an easy score. Rob and Sheena Maybin's JACK DON'T DRINK raced much on the trip on the inside and finished third but was promoted to second after the disqualification of SOLANDER who was the original second place finisher but was placed fourth for interference on the stretch turn. Judy Bradley and Clint Willson’s SIDERO settled into the third spot early and showed good courage to be in the battle on the final turn after being impeded ending up fourth but moved up to third.
Claims:
VALUE DANCER was claimed by owner Mohammed Khan and trainer Edgar Mendoza
