A warm and hazy day with plenty of sunshine breaking through the cloud cover, as the unseasonably hot May weather continues. The track was fast and fair all afternoon.
Race 1.
The first on Saturday was easily taken down by the D and E Racing's LIZZIES GIRL ($4.70), who destroyed her rivals by seven lengths in 1:17.55. Apprentice Fraser Aebly was content to let her settle off the quick pace then cruised up the rail to gain command on the final bend. The duo drew clear to an impressive score for trainer Tara Neigel. The Canmor Farms, Maureen Goss and Adrian Trombley’s ANAAMY chased a hot pace (22.22, 45.95) under Amadeo Perez and put away the speed but couldn’t hold off LIZZIES GIRL, ending up a clear runner-up. Rob and Sheena Maybin's VALERIE VALESKI was wide the entire trip and did well to be third with Chris Mamdeen in the irons.
Race 2.
The second of the day went to Ed Claggett, Foster Armstrong and Craig MacPherson's JUST MISTY ($12.50), who was far better from the gate today and that proved to be the difference. She sped off to the lead and set an ambitious opening quarter-mile of 22.30, then a relaxed half-mile in 46.34 before sneaking away when asked by Kerron Khelawan to post a nice win in 1:18.34 for conditioner Craig MacPherson. G.O. Stables’ TEXAS HUMOR broke on top, elected to sit in behind the speed then popped out three wide turning for home to gain the second spot. Tod Mountain Thoroughbreds’ GROOVY GIRL battled for the early lead around the first turn yielded into the backside and was caught late for second ending up a good third.
Race 3.
The third was taken in wire-to-wire style by Goonshow Stables’ FINDING WAYS ($6.00), who was coddled through unpressured splits of 22.94 and 46.21 by Silvino Morales, given a tap of the whip to open up on the final turn and responded with a quick final quarter mile to win in a rapid 1:16.42 for trainer Dino Condilenios. J G Williamson's GOOD BYE PUTIN was far back early and made a big run up the inside to get the second spot. Jordan Froelich's MR. QUALITY was sharp away from the latch but opted to sit covered up in third and pretty much stayed there the entire trip.
Race 4 — Tom Alcott Memorial Purse
The fourth went to the Ironside Stables’ PRETTY ARIA ($6.50), who catapulted out of her number two stall, slowed the tempo down (22.71, 46.67) while racing in tandem with the Hastings Horsepower and Minnaloushe Stables’ LASTING LIGHT before inching away and sprinting through the stretch to win in 1:17.38 for trainer Rob VanOverschot. Lorie Henson and Helen Klimes’ QUEEN OF ATTITUDE was off slowly, racing in last through the opening stages, then made a quick move up the inside to get in contention and was travelling well at the end finishing a clear second under Amadeo Perez for trainer Steve Henson. LASTING LIGHT held well to be third.
Race 5.
The fifth race provided us with the longest shot of the day as Bud Mallette and Canmor Farm's ACCORDINGLY ($36.50) struck gold. He was eased back early and had a good view of a three-way speed duel up front and, when Kimal Santo asked him to lengthen his stride on the stretch turn, he responded with a strong final kick to catch the weary leaders for the win in 1:18.65 for trainer Mark Cloutier. Canyon Farm's ROAD CLOSURE was left five or six lengths behind the field at the break, then rushed up to join the leaders in 22.36, led the field to the half-mile post in 45.72. He was understandably exhausted in the lane and was caught nearing the wire but did just see out second money. Stuart Carmichael and Mark Freeman’s WICKED NIGHT was impressive in his first start of the year, battling on the pace and stayed tough right to the finish, ending up third.
Race 6.
The sixth race was an exciting finish that went to Willow Creek Farm's PERFECT PENNY ($13.40), who sat in the three path the entire trip and just got up in deep stretch to claim victory in 1:19.65 with Silvino Morales at the controls for trainer Steve Henson. Roy and Dixie Jacobson’s LILSISTERLEE set a leisurely pace of 23.72 and 48.49 and was outrun to the wire, finishing second. Don Danard and Mel Snow's DRILL BABY DRILL had every chance to win, being positioned close to the slow pace, but couldn’t quite stay with the top two and ended up third.
Race 7.
The last of the afternoon went to Canyon Farm's BACK SHACK ($35.70). He broke on top and led in the clear, setting a comfortable tempo of 22.76 and 46.29 and he had lots in the tank when needed to win in 1:17.56 with Ridge Balgobin up for trainer Craig MacPherson. Jordan Froelich's KLIMTOGLORY had a troubled trip on the backstretch and showed good courage to rally to be second. The Foundation Stables’ homebred GREYTOGO was situated perfectly on the rail under Kerron Khelawan and saved every inch of ground to be third.
